Lazarus rose from the grave, a living paradox: literally a dead man walking. This resurrection at the hands of Christ was an undeniable testimony to a power even greater t h a n de a t h . Fo r a l l o ur technological prowess and all our medical expertise, humanity has yet to pull off a stunt like this. Near death experiences we've heard plenty about. But four days gone? Even his sisters didn't want to approach their brother in a state like that: "Lord, by now there will be a stench." But Jesus wasn't concerned. Can you hear him calling, "Lazarus, come out"? Can you see the deceased man emerging from the tomb? What a sight! What a miracle! What a God!

Dear Lenten Pilgrims,

I hope your Lenten journey has proven fruitful. I'm sure there's been some hic-cups along the way because it's not easy to deny ourselves the pleasures of this world. We often enjoy them with-out a thought. Do not tire of picking up the cross again and trying to preserve

your Lenten promises during the rest of this liturgical season. To do so is true merit for your soul.

I am blessed (and impressed!) to see so many children, young and mid-life adults, and seniors respond to my Lenten Challenge. I have already given away a number of gifts for 10 and 20 tasks completed and I've had around 15 achieve the 30-task level. Plus, I am excited to share that five third graders from our Academy, as of last Sunday, have completed all 40 tasks!

Whatever it is you are doing for Lent renew your re-solve this Sunday as we continue towards Palm Sunday and Holy Week. Note that next week, on Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, we will not have a formal procession with the palms due to our worship space be-ing in Prendergast Hall. However, we will celebrate a simple version of the Rite of Blessing of the Palms in the back of the hall before Mass.

“I will put my spirit in you that you may live.” With those words, God speaks to us through the prophet Eze-kiel in the first reading for this Fifth Sunday in Lent. In fact, all of the readings for this Sunday reflect the importance of the Spirit living within us.

St. Paul in his letter to the Romans, the second reading, asks us to understand that the spirit dwells within us, and that is what is important; not our flesh or our bod-ies, but what God has placed in us — the Holy Spirit. What is important is that Spirit, for that is truly the key to truth and life.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

Of course, in the Gospel story of Jesus raising Laza-rus from the dead, this idea of body and spirit is rein-forced. As our Lenten journeys continue, we need to continue to acknowledge the presence of Christ and the Spirit within us, and strive to fulfill that manifes-tation. Furthermore, we need to connect a key part of the Lazarus story with our own lives. Just as Jesus tells them in that story to “Take away the stone,” the Lord is commanding us to remove the stones in our lives; the obstacles that prevent our spirits to live in Him and with Him. It is time to roll our personal stones back and to pursue stewardship and disciple-ship as a way of life.
