    Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 6, 2014 Who wouldn't appreciate some real rest? We have our jobs to do, our families to tend to, our responsibilities to take care of. How can we justify rest with so many things on our to-do lists? And our resting rarely refreshes us for more than a few hours. The rest Jesus is offering us is a deeper kind of relief, a liberation from the exhaustion of life. This freedom comes when we take his yoke on our shoulders. Jesus tells us, in essence, to align ourselves with him-to do our work with him. It is not that there are no longer burdens to bear; rather, the burden is light when we share it with the Lord. When we come to him as he asked, he promises, You will find rest.

    Dear parishioners,

Blessed Fourth of July weekend! We are certainly blessed to enjoy the free-doms of this country won by those who believed these freedoms to be so pre-cious that they gave their lives for it.

Of course one of our most cherished freedoms finds itself in a precarious situation during our generation and so I encourage you this weekend to pray with your families for the precious freedom of religion we all enjoy to continue to be upheld in its fullest dig-nity. Here is a prayer you can use this weekend with your family gatherings or on your own.

O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society.

We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.

Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gath-ered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome - for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us - this great land will always be one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. God bless America!

When we honestly ask ourselves which persons in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that is those who, instead of giving advice, solu-tions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand.

    ~Henri Nouwen

    VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU

Our Common Ground Collaborative out-reach ministry is looking for willing pa-rishioners to perform two important roles:

#1 - A computer gifted individual who can help or-ganize our communication, both among our mem-bers and outbound. Four hours a month would likely be all that's needed.

#2 - Coordinator for our school music program - bringing 'live' music performances to students at our Common Ground served school. You don't have to carry a tune, just be able to juggle dates with both school administrators and music providers. This per-son is picking up with the second year of an existing program.

If you can help with either one of these needs - or would just like to learn more about them - please contact Dennis Regan at (619)670-8487 or [email protected]

Grocery Outlet in Casa de Oro is hold-ing their FEED THE NEED FOOD DRIVE during the entire month of July. Shoppers can purchase a pre-filled bag of groceries, or pack one of their

own, to be donated to the Santa Sophia food pantry. Unlike other local "bag of food" drives, the entire proceeds stay in our community. Cash donations will also be accepted at the store registers. See store dis-play or a cashier for more details.

Genuflecting (or kneeling) is a humble, reverent gesture which we make to show our love for Jesus and our adoration of Him.

Since we as Catholics believe the Holy Eucharist to be the Real Presence of Jesus under the appear-ance of what was once just normal bread, we genuflect before whenever the Holy Eucharist is present inside the tabernacle or adored on the altar. The tabernacle is a special receptacle located on or near the altar which holds the Holy Eucharist. A lit candle next to it signifies the presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist inside the tabernacle. We genuflect out of respect, honor and reverence for Him and His presence there.

If we greet others with a handshake and bow or curtsey to royalty, then it is only fitting that we genuflect with the utmost reverence before the presence of Jesus, who is King of kings and Lord of lords.

We typically genuflect upon our arrival (prior to sitting down in a pew), upon leaving (after exiting the pew), and any time we should pass before the candle-lit tabernacle.

At Mass, the priest and all other ministers assisting at the Mass genuflect when they approach and when they depart from the altar. During Mass, the priest genuflects after the showing of the Eucha-rist (Jesus Body), after the showing of the chalice (containing the Precious Blood of Jesus), and before administering Holy Communion. Facing toward the presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist (inside the tabernacle or adored on the al-tar), a genuflection is made by reverently bending the right knee down to the ground. Some may add the gesture of making the sign of the cross before rising from this position. For those unable to genu-flect, a profound bow is sufficient.

...that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth Philippians 2:10

ESPECIALLY FOR PARENTS OF INFANTS AND TODDLERS

WE SUPPORT THE EFFORT OF PARENTS who bring their child(ren) to church to begin their faith educa-tion in their earliest years (Catechism 2226). With true thanks we offer the following to help these par-ents during Mass.

THE SANTA SOPHIA NURSERY is located on the North side of the church near the single door entrance and is open Sunday from 7:45 to 9:30 am and from 10:45 am to 12:30 pm. Children, infant to age five will be cared for during Mass. New families must complete an emergency information card that stays on file.

THE CHILDRENS CHAPEL is located on the North side of the church and is accessed from the ramp near the double doors. Located directly off of the sanctuary it allows children to have an excellent view of the rites celebrated during Mass. Our Childrens Chapel is small and for the safety of those using the chapel we must ask that strollers remain outside so all can escape easily should there be an emergency. Also, we ask that one parent supervise their infant/toddler in the childrens chapel while older children sit with the other parent and/or extended family in the church pews.

FUSSY CHILDREN DURING MASS? If you are sitting in main church during Mass and your child(ren) suddenly start to fuss you are welcome to withdraw to the church vestibule until they settle down again. The vestibule has an excellent sound system for hearing Mass.
