    Samuel Moore Walton was born on March 29, 1918 inKingfisher, Oklahoma

    He was the founder and chairman ofWal-Mart storesthe worlds largest retailer

    In 1992 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedomfor his pioneering efforts

    1998 Time Magazine listed him in top 100 mostinfluential people of the 20th Century

    People's Republic of China awarded him the Golden StarForeigner's Award for "tireless assistance in thedevelopment of People's owned factories

    Mattingly and his brothers started a variety store

    chain which had grown to around sixty stores by thattime

    In 1945, after leaving the military, he decided to own

    a department store

    His father-in-law helped him with a loan of $20,000,plus $5,000 he had saved from his time in the Army,

    Walton purchased a Ben Franklin variety store in
