Took his pen name Mark Twain from a river

man’s call meaning “two fathoms deep” The Civil War eventually shut down the

Mississippi River, so Twain went west to Nevada

Worked as a journalist and lecturer, developing his humorous style that he is famous for today

Published “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” in 1835 and became an international celebrity

Published The Innocents Abroad in 1869, a

book filled with humorous travel tales Moved to Connecticut soon after, where he

remained for the rest of his life Began drawing upon his past experiences for

his work, including travels through the western mining region for Roughing It (1872), and his childhood experiences along the Mississippi for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Huckleberry Finn (1884)
