Samuel Clemensaka, Mark Twain

Born in 1835 Grew up along the Mississippi River in

Hannibal, Missouri Father died when he was 11, so he quit school

to become a painter’s apprentice Decided to pursue a career as a riverboat

captain at the age of 21

Early Life

Took his pen name Mark Twain from a river

man’s call meaning “two fathoms deep” The Civil War eventually shut down the

Mississippi River, so Twain went west to Nevada

Worked as a journalist and lecturer, developing his humorous style that he is famous for today

Published “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” in 1835 and became an international celebrity

Adulthood

Published The Innocents Abroad in 1869, a

book filled with humorous travel tales Moved to Connecticut soon after, where he

remained for the rest of his life Began drawing upon his past experiences for

his work, including travels through the western mining region for Roughing It (1872), and his childhood experiences along the Mississippi for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Huckleberry Finn (1884)

Life as an Author

Twain travelled extensively throughout his career,

even living in Europe for a stint After his wife and three of his four children died,

his writing depicted a more pessimistic view of society and human nature Died in 1910
