ISON

To human, no issue is bigger than that of life and death. ISON, regarded as the comet of the century, after travelled 200 thousand years from Oort Cloud a light-year away from the solar system, approached the sun in close range last week. Most astronomers were anxious to know whether ISON could survive the flypast against the massive heat and gravity of the sun so as to come out in good shape as a real stunning Christmas Comet .

Unfortunately, over the past week ISON seemed to have disappeared for a while but then miraculously a light tail had been seen glowing; yet not for long all hopes of the spectacular kind vanished as when astronomers reckoned that ISON had indeed entirely disintegrated leaving us no trace of any fond memory apart from scattering dusts of its own.

On Sunday sadly one of my 30-year friend passed away. Soon after graduation I came across two Christian teachers in Maths who worked alongside with me as volunteers in a service organisation. We became good friends for our common social circle and values. Ten years later one of them passed away and it was even more heartbreaking that the other one followed the same track a few days ago. Three of us followed different career path and yet we were equally dedicated and proud in fulfilling our visions. I truly miss them both.

Mr John Lau, a teacher of our John Lau class in Rejoice, passed away on Monday due to cancer. Besides planting, he is also keen in community work; he offered himself to run the class after we had done an interview with his friend Mr John Lau teaching horticulture; he was also a very popular teacher in MCU3A. Lately Mr Lau held annual horticulture exhibitions jointly with students, bringing stylish living to many people and the community. He mixed well with local Australians of the same interest and he encouraged participation of Chinese in the annual flower exhibitions held in the mainstream community.

Upon diagnosis of cancer, his declining health prevented him from teaching classes in Rejoice but to my admiration he still insisted on his teaching in MCU3A where he maintained his care and passion on the elderly.

The passing away of Mr Lau reminds me of human similarity with a comet that despite one day we may lose all of our steam and any traceable power, we can still leave behind among our neighborhood our love and care to others and these are something that would never go away in the hearts of those people in need.
