We cannot forget history and we cannot control art

East Meet West

Over the past two weeks, international attention turned to a performance by a German ballet group in Hong Kong where an episode showing the Red Guards of the Chinese Cultural Revolution was inexplicably cut after the debut screen. Some performers indicated that it was done upon political pressure exerted on the program organiser. This is something unthinkable in Australia because it would be very rare and imprudent for politicians to intervene art of this nature to this extent. On the other end this would not have happened in a totalitarian country where all artistic works in the first place have been subject to intense censorship anyway. This probably could only happen in my unique hometown Hong Kong where we used to have western culture and freedom before the handing over to Chinese authority.

Mr John Stokes, a headmaster of my school days, who came from Australia as a history academic had written a book on Hong Kong history named East Meet West . It described how the Western culture clashed with the traditional Eastern thinking. Today we can see how the political climate is yet again taking hold of Hong Kong fundamentally with several thousand years of autocratic culture behind it, despite its rapid transformation into a metropolitan city under Western ruling.

It has been reported that due to shortage of academic research allocation, most tertiary funding goes to the sectors of commerce, technology and professional studies rather than supporting development in history, culture, philosophy and art. Nobody seems to care as when some universities even abolish their schools of history and arts. However, this recent incident of political intervention on an artistic production in Hong Kong really rings the bell again.

If artists are not given freedom for their production apart from following the line of thinking and culture of the ruling party, then art will be taken as a political tool to serve the rulers in their better control. Sima Qian, the writer of Records of the Grand Historian , pointed out that the best way to rule is to reflect and learn from history, rather than to keep people in the dark autocratically away from history and from the outside world.

During the Yuan Dynasty people were subject to severe surveillance, but at the end people rose up as told just through communicating with the moon cakes . No matter what happened, we have come a long way from there to this information age where it is impossible for any blockage of thinking flow. So there cannot be any lifestyle anywhere for the authority to take control of people s reach to history and culture.

Hence I believe no history could be forgotten and no art could be controlled.
