George has had a rough childhood in Vaziani but knows he can overcome giant obstacles, now that he has learned about David and Goliath. “This story taught us to always have faith in God,” George said. “David was sure that with God, he could fight against Goliath. If God is with you, no one will overcome you.”

George is among over 1.1 million children in over 80 countries who have made decisions for Christ through The Greatest Journey. Now he is eager to share the Gospel with his family and friends.

F amilies left homeless by a natural disaster struggle to survive each day without blankets to ward off the cold, portable stoves and utensils

to prepare meals, and soap to cleanse away disease-causing germs. In crisis situations across the globe, our teams and church partners pack essential items like these into family-sized buckets and distribute them to

thousands who have lost everything. Our God can make much out of little. In 1 Kings, He sent Elijah to Zarepath, where a poor widow would care for him. When he arrived

and asked for some bread and water, the woman broke down in despair—she had nothing to offer because a great drought was choking the village. But Elijah told her not to fear. He said, “For thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth’” (1 Kings 17:14). Your gift of $45 helps Samaritan’s Purse provide survival kits to meet urgent needs of men, women, and children worldwide and show God’s abundant grace for those in crisis situations.

After God delivered the people of Israel from Egypt through the Red

Sea, they panicked because of a lack of water in the wilderness. The Lord told Moses to strike a rock in Horeb, and water poured out. Paul alluded to this in 1 Corinthians 10:4: “For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.” Wherever water runs short, people become desperate. Earthquakes and typhoons can topple storage tanks and contaminate wells. For survivors, nothing is more urgent than finding a dependable source of clean water. When Samaritan’s Purse responds to disasters overseas, we airlift portable filtration units that can be set up in hours and immediately meet the needs of hundreds of families. For $20 per family, we can provide a daily source of clean water or help establish sanitation facilities and hygiene education to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases. As soon as people have enough to drink, we can share the Gospel and help them deal with the deeper thirst in their souls.

I n the days following a devastating storm, survivors need a roof over their heads so they can escape the soaking rains and

scorching sun. When Samaritan’s Purse responds to a disaster overseas, one of our first priorities is to provide emergency shelters for families who have lost everything. A year after Typhoon Haiyan devastated the Philippines, more than 13,500 Filipino families are living in transitional shelters provided by Samaritan’s Purse. As we work alongside local church partners in disaster zones, God gives us opportunities to share with families how they can find eternal refuge in the Lord. “For You have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy. W hen the wise men asked King Herod where they could find the “King of the Jews,” Herod became paranoid and ordered the

massacre of all the little boys in Bethlehem. An angel warned Joseph: “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him” (Matthew 2:13). Even after Herod died, Jesus’ family resettled in Nazareth instead of returning to Bethlehem. Today, hundreds

of thousands of men, women, and children have fled from massacres in places like Syria, Iraq, and Sudan seeking safe haven in neighboring lands. Many may never be able to return home, and they need our help as they resettle. Samaritan’s Purse and our church partners are working in makeshift camps and border towns that have been flooded with refugees. A gift of $125 can help our teams provide a family with a heater, food parcels, or other assistance as we seek to earn a hearing for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

T he Pharoah of ancient Egypt dreamed of seven gaunt cows devouring seven fat ones, and seven blighted heads of grain consuming seven plump

ones. With God’s help, Joseph interpreted this vision as seven years of plenty followed by seven of famine. He advised the Pharoah to store up grain in preparation for the coming drought: “Then that food shall be as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, that the land may not perish during the famine” (Genesis 41:36). Famines and disasters usually come without warning and can be devastating for people who live from one harvest to the next. Every year, Samaritan’s Purse distributes tons of rice, corn, beans, and other food staples to help hundreds of thousands survive the hunger gap. Just $35 can help us deliver enough food to sustain a family for a month.

W hat made the Good Samaritan different from the religious leaders who ignored a half-dead robbery victim left on the side of the road? Jesus tells us: “He had compassion. So

he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him” (Luke 10:33-34). When lives are on the line, compassion and care can go a long way. The Lord has blessed Samaritan’s Purse

Over 700 boys and girls, ages 6-15, have participated in SAVE. As this new generation learns to live out the Gospel amid the uncertainty and heartbreak they’ve experienced, the SAVE program gives them a chance to build a strong foundation on the Word of God.

SAVE coordinator, Georgine Biwaga, believes the ministry is a “hidden treasure” for the Faradje children to discover the redeeming power of Jesus. “These things allow the children to change the bad traditional culture that dominates today,” she said.

There are places like Faradje all over the world, where children are looking for a sanctuary, and churches need our support to minister to them and lead them to Christ, “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3).

In Lao Cai, one of the poorest provinces in Vietnam, Samaritan’s Purse is working to break the cycle of poverty among vulnerable children from marginalized ethnic groups. These include a 12-year-old girl named Phuong, who said, “I want to be a teacher.” We work with these children to help them see the value of staying in school, setting goals, and learning practical skills that can be a blessing to their families.

We also built a dorm at the school for children, where they can stay during the week so they won’t have to travel long distances on foot every day. Phuong’s dad, a farmer, said this helps his daughter attend on a regular basis. “She can learn more knowledge and have a better future,” he said.

From the plains of Faradje to the highlands of Vietnam to the dusty streets of Egypt and India, Samaritan’s Purse works through partners to help children living in crisis situations, meet their physical needs, and give them a fresh start on a better life.

Bringing Treasures Out of Terror

Their homeland has been terrorized by the Lord’s Resistance Army, a militant group notorious for abducting and forcing children to become soldiers. Many of the children have either been kidnapped by the LRA or know others who have, and over half of the families living in Faradje have fled from violence elsewhere.

Churches in Faradje want to help but lack resources. Eight out of ten churchgoers in Faradje are children, but only half of the churches have children’s ministries.

Samaritan’s Purse launched a program called SAVE to provide compassionate care to vulnerable boys and girls by equipping local churches to create and sustain children’s ministries.

Through SAVE, we mobilize church volunteers to host weekly youth programs and recreational activities in places that are child-friendly and safe. The children are free to play, dance, sing, and

learn about Jesus in a loving environment. Bible lessons introduce them to God’s Word, encourage their developing faith, and teach them to interact with their parents and others in constructive, healthy ways.

“I am beginning to know the greatness of God in my life,” said a 15-year-old boy named Manzikala.

Other children are witnessing to family members and praying for their salvation. A mother named Agoyo said, “My children have said that their papa will change one day, because Jesus changed the blind man, and now their papa is blind spiritually,” she said.

W hen Jesus and His disciples encountered a

blind beggar, they asked whose sin was to blame for his lack of sight. “Jesus answered, ‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him’” (John 9:3), and He healed the man’s eyes. Samaritan’s Purse is helping restore dignity and raise opportunities for disabled children through reconstructive surgery, wheelchairs, medical devices, physical therapy, and other assistance. In Vietnam, for example, we offer scholarships for blind children like 14-year-old Xuan (pictured), who has become a wonderful musician on the Dan Tranh, a 16-string traditional Vietnamese instrument. “Ever since she’s been able to join these classes, I’ve had a hope for a bright future for her,” her mother Thuy said. A gift of $250 can supply specialized equipment, corrective surgery, or schooling to help a child like Xuan overcome disabilities and begin to glimpse the life-changing power of God.

T he weather felt a lot like Christmas in a cold, muddy tent city crowded with refugees from Syria. And that’s exactly what the children shouted—“It’s like Christmas!”—when

Samaritan’s Purse and our local church partners arrived to hand out coats and nearly 1,500 pairs of shoes. These families had left everything behind, and their children were overjoyed to put on something warm and clean. Clothing is one of the specific ways Jesus mentioned in Matthew 25 about how we should minister to the downtrodden: “The King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me’” (Matthew 25:40). For $25 we can furnish shoes and clothing for disaster survivors or refugee families, or school uniforms for impoverished children.

B oys and girls played on swing sets, climbed a jungle gym, and kicked soccer balls after a day of class at the Greta Home and Academy in Haiti. “This is an orphanage where a lot of people are working together to take care of the children,” said Merbisson, 12. Woudeline, 11, chimed in

with her timid, raspy voice, “When I am here, I eat three times a day. When I am at home, it is not the same thing. Here it is different.” Seventy children who were orphaned

or abandoned following Haiti’s 2010 earthquake live at the Greta Home, and another 50 boys and girls from the community have been integrated into the Academy. Many of the children have

committed their lives to Christ since they arrived. “I wanted to be baptized because I love God, and I wanted to walk

with God,” Woudeline said. A dozen teachers at the Greta Home care for the young boys and girls who have experienced loss and heartbreak—teaching them about their loving Heavenly Father, who promised, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). Samaritan’s Purse opened the Greta Home and Academy in 2012. It is named in honor of Greta

Van Susteren for her work on behalf of the people of Haiti, and is dedicated to raising up strong

believers who can become leaders for Haiti and ambassadors for Christ. Your $150

Jesus invites everyone with a thirsty heart to drink Him in. “‘Come!’ And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17). You don’t have to be a

scientist to understand that water is essential to life, or that drinking from a murky pond or pasture stream can be deadly. But what if you live where there is no safe source of drinking water? In places like these around the world, Samaritan’s Purse has installed water filters in hundreds of thousands of homes. These easy-to-use sand-filtered units remove disease-causing micro-organisms and pollutants using a natural process that requires no chemicals or power. For $100 we can give a family a perpetual source of safe drinking water and teach them about the river of life, “clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and the Lamb” (Revelation 22:1).

When a team from Samaritan’s Purse arrived to fix a broken well in Kenya, they found something far more ominous. Members of the community were collecting what

little money they had to hire a witch doctor, who intended to sacrifice goats to appease the evil spirits that he blamed for the mechanical breakdown. Our workers immediately recognized the situation as an opportunity to demonstrate the truth that Jesus Christ conquered evil at the Cross: “Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it” (Colossians 2:15). Our team was able to repair the well, and women rejoiced and men stood speechless as cool, clean water gushed forth. One elderly farmer exclaimed, “I now believe that there is a God in heaven who has mighty power and cares for His people.” Samaritan’s Purse drills and repairs wells in Africa, Asia, and latin America. Costs range from $400 for a pump or a hand-dug well serving a few families, up to $10,000 or more for a deep-drilled borehole that can supply fresh water for more than a thousand people.

D uring a meal at the home of Simon the Pharisee, a lowly woman came in to wash Jesus’ feet. She wet them

with her tears, wiped them with her hair, and anointed them with fragrant oil. This offended Simon, who thought the woman wasn’t good enough to touch the lord. When Jesus told the guests that her sins were forgiven, they questioned His authority to do such a thing. Instead of responding to their disbelief, Jesus addressed the woman

directly, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace” (luke 7:50). Throughout the New Testament, Jesus treated women with compassion that defied the culture of His time.

Today, women throughout the world are still crying out for the mercy of Christ. Many face heartbreaking challenges. Some endure trafficking or repeated abuse. Others live in hopeless poverty. Mothers and their infants fall sick without access to medical care. Samaritan’s Purse reaches out to these vulnerable women with initiatives to improve maternal and child health, prevent abuse and exploitation, generate income, and increase educational opportunities. Our work equips them to rise above their circumstances and demonstrates the love of God. Heroes on the Home FrontHow can we ever thank military couples who have

sacrificed so dearly to guard our freedom?

It was just a few days before Christmas in 2004 when the Army sent Staff Sergeant Juan Montealvo on what seemed like a peaceful mission—delivering school supplies for Iraqi children in Mosul. Then a nasty “daisy-chain bomb” planted by insurgents exploded a few yards from his vehicle.

It was the first of nine major explosions Juan would survive during three combat tours to Iraq. By the time he came home to stay in 2010, his wife Tanya realized something was very wrong. His speech was irregular and his responses were slow.

Juan was diagnosed with traumatic brain injury and went through years of occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy. “My wife became the caregiver,” he said. “That opened the door to a world that we weren’t prepared for.”

The Montealvos are not alone. When military personnel come home wounded, not only do they have to deal with life-changing disabilities, but their marriages can be strained to the breaking point. Operation Heal Our Patriots is a project developed by Samaritan’s Purse to help these

couples work together to grow closer to God and to each other.

We bring them to Samaritan lodge Alaska for a week where they can enjoy the rugged beauty

of a pristine wilderness, while they learn more about the

lord and His principles for a godly marriage and life. Some couples arrive barely speaking to each other, but by the time they leave, their whole outlook is transformed.

The Montealvos had prayed to receive Jesus Christ as their lord and Savior just a few weeks before they heard

about Operation Heal Our Patriots. Tanya knew God was answering their prayers.

“Our souls, our spirits, our minds needed this to reset,” Tanya said. They soaked in all the Bible-based marriage enrichment lessons and devotions led by retired military chaplains. They went kayaking, hiking, bear watching, and fishing together. Before the week was over, they renewed their marriage vows and were baptized. “I’m ready for a new beginning with my husband, walking along with Jesus Christ,” she said.

Hundreds of military couples have already been blessed by Operation Heal Our Patriots, and we are planning to bring 150 more to Alaska in the coming year. Samaritan’s Purse offers the trip and activities free of charge to the participants, as a token of our appreciation for their service. They are true American heroes.

Nothing hurts like the cry of a hungry baby. We hear it all too often in the refugee camps and other crisis situations where Samaritan’s Purse works. Infant hunger can quickly develop into severe malnutrition, which is linked to almost half of all deaths of children under five years old. To help malnourished

infants survive and recover, we set up therapeutic feeding centers where we can provide them with specially formulated protein-rich meals while we minister to their mothers in the Name of Jesus Christ. For just $9, we can feed a baby or nursing mother for a week.

Saying “I care about you” can be as simple as offering a hot meal. For many children, the food we supply

at their school or church is the only nourishment they get all day. For just $7 you can help show compassion to young boys and girls through a week’s worth of hot meals. “For the love of Christ compels us” (2 Corinthians 5:14).

T he stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock,” Jesus said in Luke 6:48. Families

who have lost everything in a hurricane, flood, or earthquake appreciate how Samaritan’s Purse reinforces the houses we rebuild for disaster survivors around the world. When storms come, they need to be able to trust the roof over their heads. Even more importantly, we want them to know they can trust their souls in the hands of the Lord. Thousands of families in Latin America and elsewhere are living in sturdy little houses constructed by Samaritan’s Purse. For a typical cost of $7,500, we can provide a destitute family overseas with a new home and a lasting example of God’s love.

CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

Three times Peter denied that he knew Jesus. Then a rooster crowed, “And the Lord turned and looked at Peter” (Luke 22:61). Jesus was looking at a friend he was about to die for— the one He had chosen to be the foundation of His church. At that very moment, Peter remembered what the Lord

had foretold. “So Peter went out and wept bitterly” (Luke 22:62). The rest of Peter’s life was marked by bold faith, and he went on to establish some of the very first Christian churches. In the same way that Peter became Christ’s “rock,” God uses humble and repentant followers today to become the pillars of the church, ministering to their neighbors through the Good News of forgiveness and the compassion of Christ. Many of these impoverished congregations meet under trees or in thatched-roof huts until Samaritan’s Purse builds them a proper sanctuary where they can worship the Lord and lift high the Cross. The cost of church construction ranges from $15,000 to $75,000, depending on the size, location, and materials.

oanna was skin and bones when she arrived at egbe hospital

in rural nigeria. the 20-year-old weighed only 65 pounds because her body wouldn’t keep food down.

She had sought care at major hospitals in Africa’s largest city, but none of the doctors there were able to pinpoint her problem, and none of their treatments had helped.

In desperation, Joanna made the five-hour trip to Egbe, where missionary doctors recognized that her symptoms indicated a partial bowel obstruction. They admitted her for surgery, and within a few days, she began improving and was able to eat solid food.

Then the doctors saw something else they hadn’t seen before in her—a smile. When one of them asked Joanna why she left a large city to seek medical care at a mission hospital, she replied, “God is here, and I know that you can help me.”

Egbe Hospital has been a life-saving medical institution and beacon of the Gospel for over 60 years, but the facilities were outdated and worn out. Samaritan’s Purse just completed an 11,000-square-foot facility to add an intensive care unit, laboratory, X-ray, and other essential services.

At the dedication ceremony, more than 1,000 locals took to the streets to praise God for the

revitalization of the hospital.

Where the Sick Can Trust God for Help

Samaritan’s Purse is committed to rebuilding and renovating mission hospitals in strategic locations so Christian physicians can offer the best possible medical and spiritual care for their patients.

Maban Hospital in South Sudan was a rural facility that was overwhelmed by the arrival of over 100,000 refugees. Patients were forced to stay in tents in the tropical heat until Samaritan’s Purse expanded the facilities. We added an operating room that is the only place in the region where surgery is available. our ministry team at the hospital offers Biblical crisis counseling to patients suffering from physical, social, and emotional trauma.

In Bangladesh, Memorial Christian Hospital serves as a powerful witness for God’s love. “Medical evangelism is of particular importance in showing genuine Christian compassion in a Muslim society,” said Dr. Stephen Kelly (pictured at left), the hospital’s medical director. “Jesus Christ, the Great Physician, serves as our ultimate example. He did not merely talk about God’s love, He demonstrated it through compassionate healing.”

Samaritan’s Purse is helping to construct a new facility for Memorial Christian Hospital that will include a 120-bed medical center, an intensive care unit, operating rooms, an obstetrics wing, emergency room, and trauma services.

When Dr. Kent Brantly and his family followed God’s call to become missionaries,

he took a two-year assignment with Samaritan’s Purse as a family practice physician in Liberia. Then Ebola erupted, and he courageously moved into the isolation wards to fight this deadly and contagious virus. “I held the hands of countless individuals as this terrible disease took their lives away from them,” he said. “I witnessed the horror firsthand, and I can still remember every face and name.” In July, the epidemic took an awful turn, and Dr.

Brantly and co-worker Nancy Writebol were infected. For a week, their lives hung in the balance. God miraculously delivered them, and they became the first Americans to survive Ebola.

As Dr. Brantly was fighting for his life, 23 more young doctors and their families took their own step of faith and began two-year assignments overseas in the same program as Dr. Brantly. World Medical Mission (the medical arm of Samaritan’s Purse) developed the Post-Residency Program to raise up a new generation of medical missionaries to replace those who are retiring. Your gifts help us cover the costs of their overseas service, which breaks down to about $4,200 a month or as little as $7 per patient. “Following God often leads us to unexpected places,” Dr. Brantly said. “My focus remains the same—to follow God.”

A missionary doctor serving in tropical Gabon was blessed with twins, but one of them was born with complications that required a portable oxygen concentrator. At the same time, a

family in the U.S. donated just such a machine to Samaritan’s Purse in memory of a child they lost, trusting that it might be used to save a life elsewhere. our medical warehouse specializes in missions like this—shipping donated medical equipment to remote places where God can use it to answer prayers. Devices that might be outdated or even discarded in the U.S. can become a Godsend in a mission hospital. For about $150, we can ship or help purchase an oxygen concentrator, incubator, X-ray machine, or other donated and refurbished equipment that will serve as testimony that God provides.

Y our child needs heart surgery.” Those are awful words even if you have access to world-class hospitals and doctors who routinely do such operations. Imagine what that diagnosis would mean if you lived in a place where life-saving surgery is simply not

available. That’s where the Children’s Heart Project comes in. We bring young boys and girls born with heart defects to North America, where we have partner hospitals and surgeons who donate their services. We also arrange for host churches and families who minister to patients and their mothers throughout the hospitalization and recovery, leading many to faith in Jesus Christ. Since 1997, Samaritan’s Purse has been able to provide surgery for more than a thousand precious children, like Eva from Honduras (pictured).

Hundreds more are on the waiting list. Since many of the medical

After Moses set up the tabernacle in the wilderness, the leaders of Israel presented a dozen oxen and six carts as a gift. “Then

the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Accept these from them, that they may be used in doing the work of the tabernacle of meeting’” (Numbers 7:5). The gift of animals still helps lighten the daily workload for people around the world who need help plowing fields, fetching water, or hauling produce to market. When floods devastated parts of Bolivia this year, Samaritan’s Purse helped to replace livestock that families needed to earn a living. Your gift of $350 can help provide an ox, donkey, or other livestock to ease the burden on a farm family and earn a hearing for the Gospel.

God promised Moses to rescue His people from slavery in Egypt and lead them “to a land flowing with milk and honey” (Exodus 3:8). Once they settled in the Promised Land, they

would be able to enjoy its abundant blessings. Samaritan’s Purse helps struggling families get the most out of their land by getting them started with goats or other dairy animals. The nutritional advantages of fresh milk every day are obvious, especially for growing children. Dairy animals can also be a dependable source of income, as extra milk can be sold to raise money for school fees, clothes, and medical expenses. As our staff offer training and basic veterinary care, we build relationships with the families that earn us opportunities to share the Gospel. A gift of $70 can help provide a goat or other dairy animal to a family in need.

Love, joy, and peace are among the fruit of the Holy Spirit in the heart of the believer, Galatians 5:22 says. Jesus tells us that He is the true vine connecting us to God’s righteousness. “He who

abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit” (John 15:5). Fruit trees are prized possessions for families struggling to make ends meet in places like Honduras, Cambodia, and Niger—growing into a perpetual source of healthy food as well as income. In addition, planting trees protects soil from erosion and helps preserve natural farmland and fields. As our teams distribute avocado, papaya, mango, and other trees in poverty-stricken communities, we point to Christ as the provider of abundant life both now and for eternity. For $45, we can supply a poor family with 30 seedlings that can yield a harvest for seasons to come and encourage them to root their lives in the Word of God.

J esus described himself as the Good Shepherd guiding his flock. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them

eternal life” (John 10:27-28). For thousands of everyday shepherds in villages throughout the world, the sheep provided by Samaritan’s Purse offer warm wool and lambs to sell for much-needed income. As we teach them how to properly care for their flocks, God gives us opportunities to share Christ’s message as the one true Shepherd and the Door for the sheep. “If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture” (John 10:9). Your gift of $80 helps us to provide a family with a sheep or other herding animal, or offer training on how to tend their flock.

f arming is a faith journey. You can plant in perfect rows and dutifully tend a garden, but you can’t control the weather or force a seed to sprout. As God’s workers, we go into the ministry field to sow the love of Christ, trusting Him to grow His Church. Paul taught the believers in Corinth: “neither he who

plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase” (1 Corinthians 3:7). Our farm and garden projects equip poor families from Haiti to Cambodia with the means to feed themselves and then earn income. As little as $55 can furnish seeds, fertilizer, tools, and training for hard-working farmers, while giving us the opportunity to tell them about the God who made the sun, the rain, and the way of salvation for all who believe.

simon Peter and his brother Andrew were casting a net into the Sea of Galilee when they met Jesus. He called out to them, “Follow Me, and

I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). God still calls fishermen to win souls and minister to those who are down and out. In Honduras, a Christian named Fausto is the captain of the “God With Us” fishing co-operative. He is one of the Garífuna, a minority group living along the Caribbean coast, where jobs are scarce and voodoo is widespread. Fausto and other church leaders who partner with Samaritan’s Purse in this project use fishing to help share the Gospel with their neighbors as they navigate the coastal waters every morning. Using a boat we provided, the Garífuna are able to earn a decent living, provide healthy food for their families, and find purpose in Christ. A gift of $50 can help provide nets and supplies or stock a pond for our fishing projects around the world.

t hey promise education for children and jobs for parents. “Just come with me.” But these are human traffickers, who lure children and

young women into unimaginable exploitation and trap mothers and fathers in years of unpaid labor away from their families. Samaritan’s Purse works with church and community leaders in Asia, Africa, and Latin America to help potential victims recognize and avoid these wicked and life-wrecking schemes. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a

roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). Heng Keang, a teacher in Cambodia, said fewer children are dropping out of school now that they understand the dangers that lurk in the streets. “After Samaritan’s Purse trained my school, all the teachers understand about safe migration issues, and we are teaching all the students,” he said. Your gift of $100 will enable our workers to reach more schools, churches, and communities and help those who are vulnerable to human trafficking to escape desperation and trust the Lord as their Redeemer.

Jesus never shied away from lepers, sinners, and others who were

branded as unclean. He said in Mark 2:17, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.” This is the heart of what we do at Samaritan’s Purse—offering physical and spiritual aid to hurting people in the Name of Christ. There is no better example today than our ministry

to victims of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa. Samaritan’s Purse doctors and nurses in Liberia risked their own lives to care for sick and dying patients, while Liberian Christians crisscrossed the country to teach a half-million people how to avoid infection and prevent the spread of the disease. A gift of $50 can help cover the cost of protective suits for health-care workers in a place like Liberia or help us fight epidemic diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, or HIV/AIDS in other parts of the world.

Jesus told a parable about jobless people getting a day’s work in a vineyard. No matter what time they

were hired, the landowner promised everyone would receive “whatever is right” as payment (Matthew 20:4). At the end of the day, he rewarded them all equally. In our vocational training programs around the world, Samaritan’s Purse works with people who might not be the first to be hired, but once we give them training and an opportunity, they can become productive, respected, and self-sufficient. We provide widows, single parents, and others the skills they need to do a job or open a small shop. Participants learn how to develop their trade while working for the glory of God. For $120 we can train and equip a person for sewing, carpentry, food service, or another productive livelihood.

one thinG she was not GettinG for Christmas—a toy. Mary grew up as one of five children of a pastor in Russia, and her family couldn’t afford Christmas gifts other than a few practical items like clothing and toiletries. So she will never forget the day in 1998 when Samaritan’s Purse delivered brightly wrapped shoeboxes from Operation Christmas Child to her church. The boxes were jam-packed with fun gifts and little treasures. “I used every item to its fullest,” Mary said. “I outgrew the gifts inside the box before too long, but I never outgrew the box.” Even today, now that she is married and living in Texas, Mary still uses that 16-year-old shoebox to store precious keepsakes. “I have had the opportunity to pack several shoeboxes myself for kids around the world, and I hope these boxes will bring just as much joy and love as I experienced through the ministry of Operation Christmas Child,” she said.
