Iota Xi Omega Chapter

March 27, 2010 Greetings, On behalf of the ladies of Iota Xi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, we would like to thank you for spending your evening with us. For 33 years Iota Xi Omega has hosted the Salute to Youth Gala, formerly known as the Debutante Ball. This eve-ning we will be presenting seventeen (17) youth to you, our community. These young people have worked hard and participated in many community, academic, cultural, and professional activities over the course of six months. Alpha Kappa Alpha has always placed special emphasis on young men and women by promoting, encouraging and supporting their scholastic and extracurricular endeavors. Through the sorority’s Salute to Youth Program we strongly support community service and community outreach programs with a special emphasis on college scholar-ships, moral support, and skill development for continued success during their college careers. The monies raised from this event will go directly to the students in the form of scholarships and salesmanship awards. We thank the parents, family and friends of the 2010 Debutantes and Gentlemen for their continued support, time, and nurturing of these young people. It has been a fun and exciting journey. It has been our goal to provide an environment in which they have felt encouraged and inspired as well as an opportunity to build meaningful rela-tionships that will last a life time. We hope that this has been a positive experience for them. So on this evening, we salute the 2010 Debutantes and Gentlemen for their participation, meeting the required goals and deadlines and for their many accomplishments. I charge them to keep their positive attitudes, ability to work as a team, and their desire to make a difference. Again, thanks to all of you for your support. A Pledge to Rescue Our Youth written by Maya Angelou © 2006

Young women, young men of color, we add our voices to the

voices of your ancestors who speak to you over ancient seas and

across impossible mountain tops.

Come up from the gloom of national neglect, you have already

been paid for.

Come out of the shadow of irrational prejudice, you owe

no racial debt to history.

The blood of our bodies and the prayers of our souls have bought

you a future

free from shame and bright beyond the telling of it.

We pledge ourselves and our resources to seek for you clean and

well-furnished schools, safe and non-threatening streets, employ-

ment which makes use of your talents, but does not degrade your

dignity.

You are the best we have.

You are all we have.

You are what we have become.

We pledge you our whole hearts from this day forward.

African Refugee Families

ACTIVITIES

African Refugee Families Community Service programs are an important part of the activities of the Salute to youth participants. This year,

the participants played a major role in selecting the community service program. Helping African Refugee fami-

lies assimilate into life in America and New Mexico was an important project for the participants.

Meeting with Governor Bill Richardson With the assistance of Attorney Shammara Henderson, the Salute to Youth Participants were able to have a private

meeting with Governor Bill Richardson. They had an open discussion about matter of concern to them ranging

from issues regarding education to issues regarding their futures. All of the participants were able to engage in a

photo opportunity with the Governor at the end of the meeting.

Black History Month Kick Off Brunch The Salute to Youth Participants met briefly with American actress, playwrite and professor Anna Deavere Smith

after her impressive speech and performance for the Black History Month Kick Off Brunch sponsored by the

African Studies Department. The participants were able to engage in a photo opportunity with Ms. Smith at the

end of her speech and performance.

Visiting residents of Bellamah Assisted Living Facility - Community Event In the second of two community service events, the Salute to Youth Participants visited residents of the Bellamah

Assisted Living Facility where they engaged the residents in conversation, sang songs for them and played the

piano.

Public Speaking and Personal Etiquette Workshop The Salute to Youth Participants learned the proper format for eating dinner at a formally set table. They

learned about proper etiquette when meeting other distinguished people; they learned about interviewing eti-

quette, and they learned how to engage in effective public speaking, all taught by local motivational speaker

Marsha Hardeman.

Parent Tea The Salute to Youth Participants displayed information about their hobbies and interests in a public forum for family,

friends and the community. In addition, parents were given the opportunity to let each of the participants know how

proud families were of them. The event was accentuated with wonderful food and a variety of flavorful teas.

Black History Cultural Event – Daniel Baty Presentation The Salute to Youth Participants attended a performance by noted poet and playwright Daniel Baty. They heard his

incredible story of survival and were inspired by remarkable story of perseverance.

Time Management and Financial Planning Workshops and a Workshop on

Business Etiquette understand the importance of Time Management and Financial Planning. Noted financial manager Thelma Palmer

and renowned time management planner Leon Chandler taught these classes to the participants. As a special treat,

Kayla Robinson, a protocol specialist provided the participants with tips on how to engage in proper business eti-

quette when interviewing for their future jobs.

Oratory Luncheon The Salute to Youth Participants presented the papers they wrote on the quotes they selected from writing by

William Shakespeare before a panel of judges and members of the community.

Sleepover and reflection The Salute to Youth Participants met in the home of Marsha Hardeman to share their views on the future and enjoy

the friendships they developed with each other over the past six months.

To Lady Jazmyn,

You are half way to your goal, continue to press forward and never look back.

As Philippians 3:13-14 says “forgetting those things which are behind, and

reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark

for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

Jazmyn, continue to be a Christian Lady, stay focus on your goals, and allow

the LORD to guide your footsteps. Keep pressing toward your goals in Christ

Jesus and never look back.

To our Dear Sweet, Goddaughter, Jazmyn Sharaye Adams

We have watched you blossom from a little girl to a smart, fashionable, sensitive,

young Christian Lady. Always allow God to order your steps, and never forget

who you are in Christ Jesus. For you are a child of the King, and know that you

can do all things through Christ who gives you strength (Philippians 4:13). Allow

God to use you to the fullest capacity.

Jazmyn, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might, put on the whole

amour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil

(Ephesians 6:10-11).

Continue to be the beautiful person that God has allowed you to become. Keep

praising that wonderful name of Jesus, and may God, though Christ Jesus, con-

tinue to grant you Grace, Mercy, Peace, Strength, Protection, Prosperity, and Love,

forever and ever.

Ms Jazmyn Sharaye Adams

Remarkable, Jazmyn! It is a pleasure for us to rethink the years from the time we first met you; the very shy young child, and have watched with great joy through the years as you have grown into the studious, adventurous and gracious young lady that you are. We read your bio with great care and admiration. You have excelled in so many areas, and we support your outlook on the future.

Jazmyn, we realize that your achievements did not come easy. But, we know that you had much help from the very able God that you serve, because you have placed your faith and trust in Him. So, just know this, the same loving Father God, and a loving, caring family and church family will continue to uphold you “…in this life-changing journey” on which you have embarked. May God ever bless you.

Our Dearest Marki, Through the years we have been blessed to have been a part of your life. To have watched your growth from an inquisitive small child to the beautiful young lady you have become, no uncle and auntie could be more proud

of you than we are. Always know that no distance or time could ever diminish the love and hope we have for you. And although we do not communicate as often as we could or should, know that you are always in our

thoughts and prayers. But when we do communicate, our conversation picks up as if is was only yesterday that we last spoke. This is so because of the special bond that has joined us for life. So no matter how

far life’s journey may lead you, always know that we are family, we are here, and we love you. So on this

special day and all days, we pray God’s continued love and favor in your life and for all the greatness he has in

store for you.

Love Always, Uncle Rob and Auntie Sheila

Amazing! Awesome! These are just two words to express our joy concerning all that you have ac-complished in such a very short, but obviously, busy and studious period in your life.

Samantha, not only have you excelled in your personal endeavors, you have shown forth integ-rity of character, It is that very important trait that has been recognized by your peers who have repeatedly found you to be a very competent and responsible leader.

In your desire for success and determination to achieve you have set a rather high bar for your-self. But, we do know that you have deep faith in God, and a very devoted family to support you. That, our dear, is a winning combination!!

Nothing can compare to the satisfaction you receive from a job well done. When the problems have been solved and the difficult tasks have been com-pleted, you know without a doubt that you've created something of real value. Any difficult challenge can seem a bit overwhelming when you first encounter it. Yet as you begin to work on it, you transform it from overwhelming to fulfill-ing. The confidence you gain from a job well done cannot be obtained in any other way. And that confidence will still be with you long after the work has been completed. The real value of accomplishment is not in the having. It is in the doing. Success is a state of mind, and the most reliable way to reach that state of mind is by working through a meaningful challenge. What a blessing it is that there is always work to be done. Step willingly forward and take on those tasks that you know will make a difference. And enjoy the continuing benefits that flow from a job well done.

Amira, you are truly an amazing young lady. I wish you much happiness and

great success.

Darlene Singer

There is no limit to your potential. For there is no limit to what you can imagine, and whatever you can imagine, you can bring into your life. Yes, there are very real hurdles to whatever you attempt. And in some way or another, you can get yourself over every one of them. When you imagine limitations, they be-come real. Instead, focus your imagination on the

positive possibilities, and focus your efforts on making them real. Think of all the things, once considered to be impossible, that are now common-place. Always remember that when there is a good enough reason, there is a way. In every moment, you are making progress in one direction or an-other. Choose to use those moments, as they come, and focus your efforts to fulfill the great potential that is yours. Feel the unique potential that is your life. Give your own special beauty to the world. Much Success – Christina Houston

A little bit of success gets you enthusiastic about making even more success. So what can you do right now to create just a small, but meaningful success in your life? A tiny step forward is, after all, a step forward. And there are plenty of ways, in every moment, to take just a tiny step forward. Every time you make a dif-ference, your confidence grows. This day is filled

with opportunities, both big and small, to make a difference. Success in one area of your life spills over into all the other areas of your life. When you feel yourself being effective, that makes you even more effective. So even though it may not solve your biggest problems right away, take that next opportunity to make a difference. Build yourself some positive momentum. The most enduring opportunities come in small doses, one moment at a time. In this very moment, there's one for you that's waiting to be claimed.

Amira, Without inspiration the best powers of the mind remain dormant, they is a fuel in

us, which needs to be ignited with, sparks. -Johann Gottfried Von Herder
