our new academic plan for 2018-19 school year. We will had a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math
(STEM) activity to introduce the new National science standards (NGSS). We will
be having another community meeting in February or March, more information will be forthcoming.
Our winter recess will begin on December 22 through January 5. School will resume on Monday, January 8,

Please call the office before 8:30am if your child will be picked up before school ends for the day. Your advance notice helps limit
interruptions to classroom instruction.
ADULT MEAL TICKETS
All adult meal tickets must be purchased in the school office between 7:30 am to 4 p.m. By Federal law, the sale of meal tickets and
the exchange of currency in the food line are strictly prohibited. Thank you for your cooperation.
PROMOTING A SAFE AND HEALTHY CAMPUS
STUDENTS ON CAMPUS AFTERSCHOOL
We are concerned about the safety for the large number of students remaining on campus well after 2:30p (MTThF/1:30 p.m. (Ws) on
a daily basis. The school office closes at 4:00 p.m. In order to prevent unnecessary stress, please communicate with your
families/friends should there be a change with regular transportation routines. Again, THERE IS NO SUPERVISION AFTER
SCHOOL. We have experienced incidences of theft, injuries and misbehavior among these students. For the safety of students, the
Honolulu Police Department will be called as a last resort when students are left behind unattended beyond the school day and
unsuccessful attempts to contact parents have been made. Kama’aina Kids continues to accept applications for their afterschool
program.
PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT
For safety reasons, students are not allowed on the playground equipment after school unsupervised. Adult supervision by a parent or
guardian is required for playground equipment use.
TRAFFIC SAFETY
Please remember to practice safe driving while dropping off and picking up your child. Be aware of students in the vicinity when
driving near our school. Your child should be dropped off in a safe area (curbside) to prevent any accidents. Please be patient and
courteous toward other parents as they are also dropping off or picking up their child on campus. Curb area fronting the school office
is a drop off/pick up zone only. Please do not park or leave your car unattended along the main driveway and please SLOW
DOWN. Mahalo!

Flu Clinic 2017
Mahalo to the Hawaii State Public Health Nurses

shot that day.

Uku Education and Prevention Workshop
PTA Program
Chair Nicole
Palmer and PTA
Legislative Chair
Chace Shigemasa
organized a very
informative
workshop for our
SLES families.
Since 2016, students with uku are allowed to
remain in the classroom. It is important for all of us
to know how to prevent and treat this condition.
Thank you to Public Health Nurses Jill
Moriyama, Ellen Taoka, and Joan Takamori for
conducting our very first Uku Education and
Prevention Workshop. Parents and children were
provided valuable information on how to prevent
and treat head lice.
Our Public Health Nurses and Tim Lino and
Lyndia Uchimura from DOE’s OCISS answered
parent questions and provided additional reference
and support to our families.
Thank you to the National Pediculosis
Association for donating LiceMeister nit removal
combs and Critter Cards to our event.
*PCNC Champions – Thank you
Britney Castillo-Oliveros, Hyun Jung,
& Nicole Palmer for helping to
process teacher job orders.
*Kindergarten IRA Volunteers – Thank you Kelly
Kim, Karen Mina, and Rajeswari Gurusamy
Thavasiappan for assisting our IRA Teachers
during Kindergarten IRA. Our next K IRA day will
be on December 8th
. Please contact our PCNC
Coordinator if you are interested in helping.
Checking for Ukus
Our Public Health Nurses recommend checking
your child’s head for ukus at least once a week.
Ukus are quick to hide so have good
lighting, a magnifying glass and a
comb
Part your child’s hair and look for
anything moving along the scalp—
especially behind the ears and the
back of the neck.
Look for eggs or nits attached to the
hair shaft near the scalp-use fine-
toothed comb.
If any live ukus are found, the next
step is treatment.

PTA Life Saving
Event
Thank you to all who donated to support our Salt
Lake Elementary School PTA Life Saving Event on
Saturday, November 18th
. We did GREAT! We
surpassed all expectations and collected over 60
units. Faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, friends,
& community members--took time out of their busy
schedules to support our SLES PTA and the Blood
Bank of Hawaii.
Congratulations to Ms. Takehara’s class for
bringing in the most donors. They won a Pizza
Party for their class sponsored by the Blood Bank
of Hawaii. Each student who registered two or
more donors will receive a special prize from the
Blood Bank.
Congratulations to lucky drawing donor
Christian Monsell (Keegan/Linnea Monsell) for
winning 2 tickets to a private showing of the new
Star Wars movie donated by Raymond Suganuma
and Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate.
All donations were distributed to local hospitals
on Thanksgiving Day. What a wonderful way to
give thanks for all we have.
Mahalo!
