PRAYER OF CONFESSION 

  P:  Gracious God,     Zacchaeus valued money over people and power over equality.     He was a sinner, but so are we.     Like Zacchaeus, we are quick to prioritize the wrong things—     valuing our to‐do lists over family time,     our own success over a relationship with you,     and wealth over generosity.     We lose sight of what really matters.     We lose sight of love.     Forgive us for our ignorance and impatience.     Call us back to the life you long for us to lead.     With humility and gratitude we pray,     C:  Amen.   ASSURANCE OF FORGIVNESS 

  P:  With a heart full of mercy and compassion, God saves us and forgives us all our sins.  Christ, the dawn from on high, shines upon us, and by the light of the Holy Spirit guides our feet into the way of peace.

PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION 

  P:  God of unending surprises, this life is a tapestry of moments woven together, and we long to be weavers of love.  Today we gather and            pray that you would unravel our bias.  Unravel our assumptions.              Unravel whatever it is that keeps us from you.  And as you do,                 clear space in our hearts for your Word.  We are listening.  We are praying.

Zacchaeus the Wealthy Tax Collector     Radical Unraveling of Vocation  Luke 19:1‐10 

  A:  A reading from Luke . . . 

He  entered  Jericho  and  was  passing  through  it.   A  man  was  there  named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich.   He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of  the  crowd he  could not, because he was  short  in stature.  So he  ran ahead and climbed a  sycamore  tree  to  see him, because he was going to pass that way.  When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to  him,  "Zacchaeus,  hurry  and  come  down;  for  I  must  stay  at  your  house today."   So  he  hurried  down  and was  happy  to welcome  him.   All who  saw  it began to grumble and said, "He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner." Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, half of my possessions, Lord,     I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much."  Then  Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham.  For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost."   

  A:  The word of the Lord.   C:  Thanks be to God.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH 

  C:  I believe in God, the Great Sewer—   Who weaves us together in community,   Collecting our loose ends and turning them into belonging. 

  I believe in the Holy Spirit—   Who hems us in before and behind,   Catching us when we fall and writing us into God’s holy narrative. 

  And I believe in Jesus Christ—   Who loved and claimed the people society had thrown out,    refusing to disregard anyone as scrap. 

  I believe God has woven part of God’s self into the fiber of our being,   Making us inherently worthy of love and belonging. 

  I believe the fabric of my life is weak,   That I am prone to error and need God’s handiwork    to remind me of love.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION 

  A:  Called into unity with one another and the whole creation, let us pray for our shared world. 

(A brief silence) 

    We pray for the church.  Sustain us as we share your word.  Embrace us as we struggle to find our common ground.  Lift up leaders with powerful and prophetic voices.  Free us from stagnant faith.  Hear us, O God. 

  C:  Your mercy is great. 

  A:  We pray for the well‐being of creation.  Protect the air, water, and land from abuse and pollution.  Free us from apathy in our care of creation and direct us toward sustainable living.  Hear us, O God. 

  C:  Your mercy is great. 

  A:  We pray for the nations especially the United States and Canada, celebrating their nationhood.  Guide leaders in developing just policies and guide difficult conversations.  Free us from patriotism that hinders relationship‐building.  Lead us to expansive love for our neighbor.                 Hear us, O God. 

  C:  Your mercy is great. 

  A:  We pray for all in need.  For all who are tired, feeling despair, sick,            or oppressed especially Alexis, Jane, Lindsey, Pastor Tom, Bob, Bruce, Thomas, Virginia, Olivia, Wanda, Gwyneth, Greg, Brian, Arabella, Jim, Heather, Andy and those we say aloud our hold in our hearts.  Take their yoke upon you and ease their burdens.  Give your consolation and free us from all that keeps us bound.  Hear us, O God.

  A:  We pray for this congregation.  Bless pastors, deacons, and congregational leaders.  Energize children’s ministry volunteers,                  church administrators, and those who maintain our building.  Shine in       this place that we might notice the ways your love transforms our lives.

  A:  We give thanks for those who have died in faith especially Jan Hus and the Apostle Thomas.  Welcome them into your eternal rest and comfort us in our grief until we are joined with them in new life.  Hear us, O God.

OFFERING PRAYER 

  A:   Let us pray … God of goodness and growth, all creation is yours, and your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.  Water and word, wine and bread:   

    these are signs of your abundant grace.  Nourish us through these gifts, that we might proclaim your steadfast love in our communities and in the world, through Jesus Christ, our strength and our song. 

  C:  Amen.

  P:  The Lord be with you.   C:  And also with you. 

  P:  Lift up your hearts.   C:  We lift them to the Lord. 

  P:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.   C:  It is right to give our thanks and praise. 

PREFACE 

  P:  It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Although our road has been stony going, you have given us the power to stand firm in the face of wickedness and to rejoice in triumph over death and the grave.  And so, with the multitude from east and west, from north and south, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we lift our voices in the unending hymn:

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING 

  P:  God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, you have brought us               this far along the way.  In times of bitterness you did not abandon us,       but guided us into the path of love and light.  In every age you sent prophets to make known your loving will for all humanity.  The cry of the poor has become your own cry; our hunger and thirst for justice is your own desire.  In the fullness of time, you sent your chosen servant to preach good news to the afflicted, to break bread with the outcast and despised, and to ransom those in bondage to prejudice and sin. 

    In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread,                   and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:  Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.  Do this for the remembrance of me. 

  P:  Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:  This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and all people for the forgiveness of sin.  Do this for the remembrance of me. 

    For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 

  C:  Christ has died.  Christ is risen.  Christ will come again. 

  P:  Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we await the day when Jesus shall return to free all the earth from the bonds of slavery and death.  Come, Lord Jesus! And let the church say, Amen. 

  C:  Amen. 

  P:  Send your Holy Spirit, our advocate, to fill the hearts of all who share this bread and cup with courage and wisdom to pursue love and justice in all the world.  Come, Spirit of freedom! And let the church say, Amen.

  P:  Join our prayers and praise with your prophets and martyrs of every age,     that, rejoicing in the hope of the resurrection, we might live in the 

freedom and hope of your Son.  Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father,           now and forever.

THE LORD’S PRAYER 

  P:  Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us:   C:  Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,      thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.      Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses,  

    as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom,  

    and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.  Amen.

JESUS LOOKED UP (Zacchaeus the Wealthy Tax Collector)

Inspired by Luke 19:1‐10 Acrylic & Ink on Canvas 

Seeing, taking notice, acknowledging, lifting up—Jesus did all of these things as he looked up at Zacchaeus, calling him down, resting love and responsibility on his shoulders.  I teach middle school art.  I have spent this school year testing the waters.  Each day I try a new collection of inputs for various situations.  The most effective 

one is to stop in at every single student’s seat to have a personal conversation with them.  In these conversations, I reiterate the assignment, glean information about what the student plans to do, and answer any questions.  The byproduct is positive productivity.  Is it because I’ve shown that I care?  Is it because I’ve clarified the expectations?  Is it because I simply acknowledged their existence in the room?  Is it because I saw them?  Middle schoolers don’t realize that you can hear and see them from across the room.  Their maturity level is simply not there yet.  In this image, Jesus looks up with grace.  A shimmer of gold on his skin represents the presence of God in him.  He takes notice of a selfish, greedy,            and immature adult.  Zacchaeus’ actions make me think he did not mature much after middle school.  By the standards of society, exhibited by the comments of those around him, this man does not deserve to be acknowledged.  When he is finally seen, all of his immaturity melts away.  He immediately rises to the occasion.  Take notice, acknowledge, lift up.  See.
