He Is Not Here—He Is Risen! I can hear some of you—responding in unison—”He is Risen Indeed! Alleluia!” It is simply one of the best parts of Easter.

Well, it is the end of April and we are, as a community, fresh off a fantastic Holy Week and Easter weekend together. With Easter so late this year though, there is seemingly not a whole lot of time to bask in the glow before we need to

wind up...in order to wind down the program year and launch into summer. Already this week I have had meetings

about Day Camp and Servant Trips...it is one busy time that

comes right on top of another.

But I was reminded at our council meeting last night, thanks to

great devotions brought to us by one of your terrific lay

leaders, that the season of Easter is a “thing” for a reason. Yes, Easter is not just one day—it is an entire season that will take us

to the day of Pentecost. Easter is a season because we do need a chance to bask in the glow of the resurrection—no matter

how busy we are. In fact, it is essential that we spend some time here...at the entrance to the empty tomb, to hear these

words again and again—”He is Not Here.” We must linger, even in the hustle of a busy spring, to really celebrate resurrection,

new life, and the promise of life with God that overcomes even

death.

Why? Well, this is where I propose that a six week season isn’t

even long enough. “He is Not Here” - we need to hear it over and over again because life happens, death permeates our

living, heartbreak occurs, and disappointment continues to seep into our lives. We need to be reminded of God’s victory

over the grave and really soak it up...so that daily living does

not overwhelm us and death does not win.

We need this Easter season because resurrection is not just

one of the things we celebrate as Christians. The empty tomb

is not just a one-Sunday morning event that we sing about

Important Dates!

April 28: Join us THIS Sunday at 9:15 am for an Earth Day Celebration led by the SH Green Team.

May 12: Affirmation of Baptism, for four of our youth, at our 10:30 am worship service.

May 19: Joint SpringHouse Worship lead by our Youth with help from our Children!

May 19: South Dakota Servant Trip Fundraising Lunch at 11:45 am following our Joint Worship.

May 26: Memorial Day Weekend is when we will switch to ONE worship service at 9 am.

May 29: Theology on Tap at Taco Lago. Join us at 6:30 pm for good food and conversation!

each spring. We need this Easter season because, as Will

Willimon puts it...

"While there are so many ways to

"explain" the resurrection. The point is,

we can't explain the resurrection.

The resurrection explains us!"

We need to take a minute and stand here, at the entrance to

the tomb, and really hear the words…”He is not here. He has

been raised”. Because it is in these words that we find our being...we find who we are. In these words we find what it

means to be beloved children of God, inheritors of eternal

life...not abandoned to navigate death, sorrow, and

disappointment alone—but accompanied by

“the God who shakes heaven and earth,

who death could not contain.” (Janet Morley)

We are not alone. Death does not win—even when it feels so

overwhelmingly powerful in our lives. This is who we are—we are Easter People—defined by resurrection.—created and made

new in an empty tomb.

He is not here. He is Risen! - He is Risen Indeed! Alleluia!

Easter Blessings Easter People!

Theology on Tap (Taco Theology)

Join us on Wednesday May 29 for our first

Theology on tap after Easter. Since it was so good last time—let’s do Taco Lago at 6:30

pm. Hope to see you there!

Adult Faith Formation

May 5 and 12: Human

Geography of Palestine

We hear a lot of things in the news about the situation in

Israel and Palestine. What’s the Biblical history that connects the dots, how does it relate

to the Bible and modern history?

June 2 & 9: Is My Muslim Neighbor’s God the Same as My God?

Guest speakers TBA.

Don’t fret about missing adult faith formation due to our new

9 am start time. At the beginning of June—we will adjust our worship to make sure we can take part in this important

conversation!

Seasons of Giving in May

As we look ahead toward summer, we will take the month of

May to talk about our summer ministry opportunities. Day Camp, Summer Camp, and our Servant Trip to South Dakota

will take center stage and you will hear how you can help support these amazing opportunities!

Summer Worship

This summer we will

once again change our worship schedule from

two services to one. Beginning Memorial

Day Weekend (May 26) we will start to worship

only at 9:00 am!

This was an experiment last summer and the response was overwhelmingly positive. And so...we are looking forward to

coming together this summer, sharing our music styles, sharing

our worship traditions, and most importantly, seeing everyone in the same room at the same time.

Watch for some very special worship and service opportunities

throughout the summer as well. During worship we will be assembling bee hotels, bagging dog food for MARS, writing

encouraging notes to our neighbors, participating in letter writing for justice, and more.

It’s bound to be a great summer for worship at Salem! Come

join us where all are welcome.

Sign Up for Day Camp

We want your kids, your

grandkids, your neighbors kids, even your neighbors

grandkids! That’s right! Let’s gather them all for this

summer’s amazing South Minneapolis Day Camp—”Come to the Table”! But that’s not

all...We need you too! If you have time during the week,

whether it’s the entire week, or just a few hours on one day, you are welcome to be part of this fantastic event.

South Minneapolis day camp is a progressive ecumenical

summer day camp experience. Our theme this year, "Come to the Table” will allow us to explore food justice, creation care,

radical welcome, communion, and being part of a global community as we play, pray, do art, sing and learn together!

Dates: June 17-21, from 9 am-4 pm each day

Ages: Entering K - Entering 8th grade (separate tracks for elementary and middle schoolers)

Where: Bethel Lutheran Church, 4120 17th Ave S,

Minneapolis

To sign up: Registration will be available in the sanctuary and via the eblast and website beginning the first week of May.

Watch for a link to come through email and hard copies to show up in worship!

ZOOM House Baby Shower

ZOOM House has a resident who will

be giving birth to a baby boy in May who really has nothing she needs to

welcome him home. Pastor Rhonda jumped at the chance to contact

ZOOM and tell them we would do our very best to gather items for this resident and her new baby boy through the

beginning of May. While she is in need of everything baby -

some specific items include:

New—Bottles, Pacifiers, Diapers, Baby Wipes

New or Gently Used: Blankets, Swaddling Blankets, Onesies,

Socks, Booties, Bassinet, Bed, Car Seat, Play Pen, & Clothes If you are able/willing to donate any of these items, bring

them to worship or drop them off during the week in the

office through the first week of May.

*If you would like to donate one of the larger items, let Pastor

Rhonda know and she will contact ZOOM to make sure they have not received one yet and make arrangements for the

donation.

Sanctuary Switch

It’s that time again! On Monday, June 3 in the morning, we’ll be moving from Garden Sanctuary to South Sanctuary for the summer months. Many hands make light work—please plan to come and help if you are able.

SpringHouse News

New in the SpringHouse Library:

Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver Barb Livdahl from the Library committee writes: Are you

interested in climate change and worried about the future of the earth? I am, so when a friend suggested I read the novel

Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver, one of my favorite

authors, I picked it up.

Almost immediately I was involved in restless Dellarobia

Turnbow’s experiences. Running away from her humdrum life,

she trudges up the mountain in her backyard toward a rendezvous with a boyfriend. Nearing the top, she is stunned

when the mountain explodes in pulsating, brilliant light, an intense fiery glow like a “lake of fire.” For the first time in

history, millions of monarch butterflies have come to overwinter on this mountain in Appalachia. Their usual

overwintering place in Mexico is experiencing catastrophic flooding and mudslides. A scientist comes to study this unusual

phenomenon; journalists come to write about it; tourists come to see it; do-gooders come to save the butterflies. The miracle

draws explanations from Dellarobia’s family, her church, and

the community. Its impacts are physical, intellectual, psychological, spiritual, and social.

I recommend you read Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver.

You will not only learn about climate change, but as you identify with Dellarobia Turnbow, her family and community,

you will experience its broad impacts.

Share-the-Care

Salem members Shannon

Fast and Erica Larson worked hard with other

SpringHouse members to spruce up our building on a

Saturday in April. Thanks for your dedication!

The Gift Card Fundraiser is back!

This easy fundraiser supports the SpringHouse mission fund.

Order gift cards for a number of retailers and use them for thank you gifts, special occasions, personal shopping, and more.

Place your order at ShopWithScrip.com, by entering our code (BF16DF4B443L6) , and creating an account. There you can see

the card options available and submit your order. Pay the church, and we will deliver your card(s) to you at church. If you’d

rather avoid the computer, talk to Becki Whitaker about how to

place an order. Orders will be collected by May 5 to deliver by May 19. If you have questions, contact Becki Whitaker at

[email protected] or 651-686-6571. Thanks for helping to support SpringHouse missions!

From the Finance Committee

Changes to the SpringHouse Ministry Center Covenant adopted

by all 3 congregations earlier this year brought some changes to how we process check requests, coffee hour cash receipts, etc...

The Covenant defines the membership of the Finance Committee (2 representatives from each congregation),

requires a Treasurer elected by the SHMC Board (currently Diann Uzelac/Salem) and creates a new staff position called

Financial Secretary (Laurie Zaepfel).

Check request forms can be found in the SHMC Treasurer's mailbox (center column at the very bottom...in a manila folder).

Please complete a form and attach the documentation

(invoice/receipt) for payment to a vendor or for something you need to be reimbursed for from SHMC funds. Please submit

your request as soon as possible so that we can process payment to you promptly. Put the completed request in Laurie

Zaepfel's mailbox (right hand column, 3rd down from the top). Laurie processes requests for payments, prints checks, records

data for our financial reports, routes checks to the designated check signers and distributes/mails out payments.

Deposits to our account at Trustone generally happen once a

week and includes receipts from groups/individuals renting space in the building, checks from each congregation for shared

SHMC Operating Expenses and miscellaneous cash receipts like those from the coffee hour donation basket. Envelopes can be

found in the serving kitchen (drawer below the microwave) for

coffee hour money. Once sealed, the envelope should be placed in Laurie Zaepfel's mailbox. If you have any specific

questions, please contact Diann at [email protected] or Laurie at [email protected] or 612-872-4650.

Support Families in Sanctuary

As a Sanctuary-Supporting/ Immigrant

Welcoming Church, we are working with other faith communities in South

Minneapolis who are providing sanctuary at this time. One very pressing need is help with the cost of

food. Specifically, we can support families by donating Cub Food gift cards. You are invited to buy Cub Food cards and

place them in the offering plates on Sunday. They will then be

delivered to churches hosting sanctuary families. Thank you for your support in this ever important ministry!

SpringHouse Joint Servant Trip

Last Call to join us this summer in South Dakota! Our first real

servant team meeting will be Sunday April 28 at 12 pm. If you have thought about joining us—this is the last chance to get on

board. Talk to Pastor Rebecca or Pastor Rhonda to get your name on the list!

Meet Your Muslim Neighbors!

Ramadan is the month of the Islamic lunar

calendar during which Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset; in 2019

it falls between the dates of May 5 – June 4. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the “five

pillars” of Islam, and is performed to learn compassion, self-restraint, and generosity.

Taking Heart Open Houses is a long-running program

coordinated by the Minnesota Council of Churches (MCC) and the Muslim American Society of Minnesota (MAS-MN) to

bring Christians and members of other faith communities

together with Muslims for food and conversation during Ramadan. Minnesota mosques and Islamic community centers

welcome their non-Muslim neighbors for a traditional Iftar, inviting a time of encounter and learning. In 2018 Taking Heart

saw more than 1100 non-Muslims attend Open House Iftar dinners.

Registration is now open so you can sign up for one or more

events at: http://bit.ly/TakingHeartRegister. Bring a friend and learn more about your Muslim neighbors! These events are

free and open to the public. Questions? Please contact the Rev. Cynthia Bronson Sweigert at [email protected]

A change in plans! Instead of leading three separate worship services, our Youth will be leading our joint SpringHouse

worship service on May 19, celebrating the end of the Sunday School year. There’s a lot of prep for this opportunity where

the youth are able to share a glimpse of themselves and glimpses of God in front of all of SpringHouse! Families,
