W elcome to all the families of our students at the University of Arizona! We hope that you have a nice weekend of catching
up with one another, and becoming more familiar with your daughters and sons lives here at the U of A. It is a real honor for us to be involved in this wonderful ministry to our college and graduate school population. Attending the U of A is a great honor, and the potential for learning, and specializing in certain fields - is off the charts! With all the exciting opportunities - it is so easy to become overwhelmed by all that the University has to offer, both in and out of the classroom. At Newman, our hope is always to be a helpful option, among the sea of so many helpful and alternative choices. Please know that our hearts’ first desire is to provide an environment for the faith and life of our students to flourish in the best way possible. We invite you to check out our website at uacatholic.org - to see all the ways that the Newman Center is present to your loved ones. We also invite your financial support to help us to do more in the way of providing good programs, and to improve our facilities to ensure good air conditioning, quality sound and multi-media in our chapel, library, classroom, and other meeting spaces, as well as to support enough staff to attend to the many needs and questions that rises from being at a large University that is the UofA. YOUNG ADULT GROUP UPDATE At 7:30pm on Thursday, October 19th, the Young Adult
Group will have a social in the Curry Classroom. During the social we will set aside some time to write inspirational
letters, and fill in some minor roles to assist with the upcoming Fall Student Retreat
RCIA NEEDS LUNCH VOLUNTEERS Our community is blessed to have an amazing RCIA
Program with a group of 14 candidates and catechumens. We attend the Sunday 11AM Mass together,
followed by lunch, and then class.
We are in need of the Newman community’s support in providing lunch. Given the size of the group, we would suggest teams. Please sign up for a date on one of the sheets on the back wall of the chapel. Or, you can also support RCIA lunch by making a cash donation at the
Newman Office.

ANNUAL RED MASS
Most Reverend Gerald F. Kicanas will celebrate the Annual Red Mass on Tuesday, October 17 at 5:30 p.m. at Saints Peter and Paul Church, (Campbell and Lee, across from UMC). The annual tradition of holding a Mass for judges, attorneys, law school professors, and others working in the legal profession, dates to the opening of parliament in 13th century England. During the Mass, we pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit for all who seek justice, and we focus on the God-given power and responsibility of all those working in the legal profession. The event is celebrated in conjunction with the St. Thomas More Society of Southern Arizona and the Catholic Foundation. In recent years, we have recognized someone from the local legal profession and law enforcement to receive the St. Thomas More Society recognition. This year, Patrick McNamara a parishioner at Saints Peter and Paul parish will receive the award for the legal profession. Deacon Ernest "Ernie" Trujillo, a Regional Director overseeing five of the ten state-operated prisons in Arizona and permanent deacon for the Diocese of Tucson at Assumption of the Virgin Mary Parish, Florence, AZ will receive the award for the law enforcement community. Each year the Society awards a scholarship in honor of the memory of the Honorable John M. Roll. All are welcome! KINO BORDER INITIATIVE Kino Border Initiative is a bi-national ministry of the Society of Jesus and Sisters of the Eucharist which
provides support for migrants who have been deported from the United States and are on their way back to their
homes in Latin America.
Newman provides breakfast to migrants on the first and third Saturday of the month. Volunteers prepare food on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, leaving Newman at 6:45AM to drive to Nogales, Sonora, Mexico to serve
breakfast to migrants. If you are interested in participating in the KBI Project, please Joji Maes at
VOLUNTEER WITH LEND-A-HAND Lend A Hand (501 c3) needs you! Volunteers will partner with senior neighbors in 13 mid-town neighborhoods—
north of the University of Arizona. Drivers are needed for transportation, errands, and produce delivery. Good conversationalists and caring listeners are needed for
social activities and friendly calls and visits. Handypersons are needed for simple home maintenance and yard work. It takes a village to care for our community’s elders. You

HEARTLAND HOSPICE SEEKS VOLUNTEERS Volunteers will be fully-trained to understand Hospice. One visit per week for a 1 – 2 hour period is common. Please have your own transportation as patients are in
their own homes or an assisted living home. Our veteran patients need a veteran volunteer to visit who
