Dear Friends, What a joy it is for me to return once again to St. Peter’s! Throughout my many years of seminary formation, I have always enjoyed my time here with all of you. Know how grateful I am for your kindness, your support, and, most especially, your prayers. This past weekend we were happy to welcome our new parochial vicar, Fr. Austin Ammanniti, who has just returned from studies in Rome! He was the first person to welcome me to the seminary when I visited some years ago, and I was blessed by his friendliness and helpful advice during my first year of seminary studies. We are very fortunate to have him here with us, so please give him a very warm welcome! A few weeks ago, Fr. Hite and I were planting some new shrubs between the rectory and the church. He and I both find gardening to be an enjoyable summer activity. Taking a few minutes to water some flowers brings a welcome respite to a long and busy day. In the Gospel last week, Jesus reminded us that we need rest from our work and from our burdens. Certainly leisurely activities can help, but the best rest we can hope for comes from Jesus. That’s why He says: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” We would do well to remember that St. Augustine said that our hearts will be restless until they rest in the Lord. One of the best ways to rest in the Lord is to spend time with Him. I invite you to join me on the Sunday, July 30 at 5:00 PM in the church for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Evening Prayer. This evening of combined silent and communal prayer might just be the rest you are looking for in the midst of an action-packed summer. Remember how often Jesus took time for prayer with His Father. His example inspires us and reminds us that we, too, need to make time for God. Time with Jesus is time well spent. Let us praise the Lord, give Him thanks, and pray for one another! Deacon Andrew Wellmann

We extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to all who provided cookies and supported our brothers by prayer and in other ways last Saturday during our mini-retreat at RiCI. I personally thank you from the bottom of my heart. I greatly appreciated the love and care that went into your packaging of the cookies, the offers to help in other ways, and

your interest in our parish prison ministry programs. The two little words "thank you" are not enough but all we have! We've had two "big" weekends in a row at RiCI -- the retreat last Saturday culminating in Mass with Fr. Nick Weibl - and Mass this Saturday with Bishop Daniel Thomas! Bishop Thomas visits each prison annually, and the men greatly enjoy and appreciate his presence and devotion.

The Monsignor Edward C. Dunn

Foundation for education

The Msgr. Edward C. Dunn Foundation for Education is an Endowment Fund which was created in 1985 to support Catholic education in St. Peter’s Parish Schools here in Mans-field, Ohio. Its specific purpose is to generate a significant financial resource for the parish in its ongoing effort to pro-mote and maintain this most important ministry of the Cath-olic Church.

As Msgr. Edward C. Dunn said in his own words, “Education is the greatest gift we can give the young people.”

Throughout the 2016/2017 school year, the Dunn Foundation purchased classroom needs such as art supplies, sheet music, and science lab materials.

The foundation also provided tuition assistance through sev-eral donor named funds. The support provided to St. Peter’s School through the Dunn Foundation would not be possible without the generosity of its donors. Thank you to all who have donated to this fund in the past.

Please feel free to contact the Development Office for more information on how you can leave a lasting impact for the students of St. Peter’s by calling 419-524-2572 ext. 2130.

FRUIT OF THE WORD

The seed is the word of God. The agricultural metaphors in all of today’s readings give richness to the message that the word of God, cultivated in our hearts, bears much fruit in our lives. Creation itself awaits the redemption of all, even as our bodies await the resurrection. Just as we will rejoice in the fulfillment of God’s word, so will all of creation sing for joy in the Reign of God. The word of God is effective and ho-ly; it brings about exactly what it says. It is not futile or empty, but rich in meaning for those who hear and are healed. Those who hear the word of God and keep it will, with all creation, bear much fruit and sing for joy. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Two centuries ago, Archbishop John Carroll worried that Americans would not appreciate the linguistic veil over our worship, and asked that the liturgy in the new United States be in English, not Latin. How did our liturgy come to be in Latin in the first place? In the first century, the dominant lan-guage in the regions where the church first flourished was Greek. Today in much of the world, almost everyone speaks at least a bit of English. Recently, the European Union even considered making English its official language, a curious proposal since only two English-speaking countries are members.

Just as English is a unifying language today, it was hard to function in the ancient world without a smattering of Greek. Even the word “Eucharist” comes from the Greek for “thanksgiving.” For a long time, Greek was the language of worship, even in Rome. Slowly, society in the west shifted to a bias for Latin and against Greek. Latin first appeared in public prayer at the end of the second century, in the coloni-al outposts of North Africa. Soon, Latin became the language of culture, and so as fixed prayer forms were written, they were transmitted in Latin. From Rome and Africa, over the next four centuries, the new liturgical language of Latin spread north to Gaul and Britain. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

On a summer’s day

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the wa-ter, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time. ~ John Lubbock

THANK YOU!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank every-one for their generous support of this year's Vaca-tion Bible School. Fifty children were in attendance

and the children had a wonderful time learning more about the Eucharist. I would like to thank all of our youth and adult helpers who made this program great. Special thank you to the theater department and all who provided donated items or monetarily donated to the program. ~ Elizabeth Wurm

Not willing to let go of your marriage? Many couples continue to struggle in a marriage but are not willing to give up on each other. There is hope. Retrouvaille is a program designed to help struggling marriages regain their health. It helps a husband and wife rediscover or re-awaken the love, trust and commitment that originally brought them together. The program is highly successful in saving hurting marriages, even bringing reconciliation to couples who have already separated or divorced. Retrouvaille is a peer ministry of volunteer couples that can help you learn the tools of healthy communication, build intimacy and heal, just as they have done in their own marriages. For more information about our July 21-23 Retrouvaille Weekend program for couples, contact our registration team: Joe and Arlene at 419-841-1116 or visit HelpOurMarriage.com.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE:

The stress and anxieties of family life are like “thorns which choke off” any opportunity to reflect on God’s presence in our lives. Notice in todays’ Gospel Jesus “left the house” so He could connect with His Father. Grasp five minutes each day to appreciate God walking with you. ~ By Bud Ozar
