Dear Parishioners,

It’s good to be back. I returned Monday, 10 February and

arrived at the rectory about 6:30 or so. My time away

was very fruitful and also enjoyable. I participated in the Vigil and

Investiture for the Knights of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, of which Order,

I have the rank of Chaplain. Once again, this year, the Royal Family of

France was represented by Her Highness, Princess Clothilde of Orléans.

During my time in New Orleans, I had the opportunity to practice my

French a bit. It’s amazing how little one remembers when one doesn’t

use the language. I used to be fluent in French and in German, but,

unfortunately, I can’t make that claim any longer. Still, I’d probably be

able order dinner and find the restroom.

There were two other priests with me for the Investiture, a Father

Hector Perez, from Baltimore and a Father Paul Breczinski, General

Chaplain. Father Paul and I shared a room. Unfortunately, Father Hector

was with us for only a short time. Father Hector (who has three

doctorates) went to seminary in those years known as “The Terror” in

the 70s, 80s and into the 90s where seminarians who wanted to kneel

for Communion, pray the rosary and adore Our Lord in the Blessed

Sacrament, were often reviled and abused, physically, emotionally,

psychologically and spiritually. They were the “rigid” Neanderthals

which the Church no longer needed and which were very often kicked

out of seminary and never ordained. Father told me that his brother

seminarians would restrain him and kick him in the knees. So much for

Christian charity and fraternity. Frightening to know that these abusers

are, most probably, still current pastors here and there today.

So, now we are close to the end of the first occurrence of Ordinary

Time and at midpoint in the season of Septuagesima. After this

weekend, we have only a week and a half left to prepare ourselves for

Lent. Please see the notice for Ash Wednesday Masses in this bulletin.

To close, I would like to thank all of those parishioners who helped take

down our Christmas decorations. I know it was quite a job. I’m so very

grateful for your generous donation of time. Also, though not many see

it, a new parish volunteer painted the sacristy and it’s a shining gem.

Rite of Confirmation Our confirmation candidates will receive the sacrament

of confirmation on Tuesday, February 25th, 2020 at St.

Paul’s Church in Joliet. All confirmation candidates and

their sponsors must be in their seats 6:30 p.m. Boys

usually wear a while or light colored dress shirt, dark slacks, and a

tie. Girls usually wear a dress, skirt, or pants suit, but all girls should

be modest in their selection. All sponsors should follow the same

dress code. (Please no jeans or gym shoes.)

Confirmation practice will be held on Tuesday, February 25th, 2020

at 5:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Church in Joliet. (immediately before Mass)

All confirmation candidates and their sponsors must be in their seat

by 5:20 p.m. Parents, family and friends will be allowed to enter the

church at 6:00 p.m.

40 Days for Life Campaign Many prolife groups from various Catholic parishes will participate

in the 40 Days for Life campaign. This non-violent protest includes

prayer at the Aurora abortion clinic on six Saturdays, February 29

through April 4. Participants peacefully and prayerfully witness to

the harm that abortion inflicts on the child in the womb, the mothers

seeking abortion and the society that allows such activity. Those who

would like to come and pray for an hour at the abortion clinic with

other Catholics from our diocese will meet in front of St. Joseph's

Church in downtown Joliet at 9 a.m. on these six Saturdays and re-

turn around noon. Carpools will be available. If you have questions,

Lenten Regulations

1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain

from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

2. All from the age of 18 years up to the beginning of their

60th year are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good

Friday.

3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full

meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, suffi-

cient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each

one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full

meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two

days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are al-

lowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously

affected, the law does not oblige.

4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is

sinful.

5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church

year. Therefore, all of the faithful are strongly urged to de-

velop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial. All

Catholics are encouraged to support generously the charita-

ble works of the whole Church, pray and perform works of charity and mercy.

6. Those who are sick, pregnant, or nursing, or whose

health would adversely be affected by fasting or abstinence,

should not consider themselves bound by these norms.

Confirmation Candidates shared an afternoon

with the residents at Sunny Hill Nursing Home Last Sunday was a big day for our confirmation candidates. After

class, our confirmation students stayed to work on their confirma-

tion shield project. Students enjoyed pizza for lunch. At 12:30

p.m., our confirmation students went to Sunny Hill Nursing Home

to complete various projects and visit with their residents. They

also walk around from room to room to pass out the craft projects

our students made for the residents. Afterwards, we cleaned up the

craft projects and headed back to St. Joseph's Church. Thank

you very much!

The Devotion of the Seven Sundays

The Seven Sorrows and Seven Joys of St. Joseph will begin on Sunday, February 2nd, 2020.

This devotion is recited on the seven Sundays before St. Joseph’s feast day on March 19th.

The following prayers and devotions are found in the “Favorite Prayers to St. Joseph” by

By this sorrow and this joy we implore thee to obtain for us the grace to pass over

from life’s pathway to hear the angelic songs of praise, and to rejoice in the

shining splendor of celestial glory.

3. O Glorious St. Joseph, thou faithfully obeyed the law of God, and thy heart was

pierced at the sight of the Precious Blood that was shed by the Infant Savior dur-

ing His circumcision, but the name of Jesus gave thee new life and filled with

thee quiet joy.

By this sorrow and this joy, obtain for us the grace to be freed from all sin during

life, and to die rejoicing, with the holy Name of Jesus in our hearts and on our

lips.

4. O most faithful Saint who shared the mysteries of our Redemption, glorious St.

Joseph, the prophecy of Simeon regarding the sufferings of Jesus and Mary

caused thee to shudder with mortal dread, but at the same time filled thee with a

blessed joy for the salvation and glorious resurrection which, he foretold, would

be attained by countless souls.

By this sorrow and this joy, obtain for us that we may be among the number of

those who, through the merits of Jesus and the intercession of Mary, the Virgin

Mother, are predestined to a glorious resurrection.

5. O most watchful guardian of the Incarnate Son of God, glorious St. Joseph, what

toil was thine in supporting and waiting upon the Son of the most high God, es-

pecially in the flight to Egypt. Yet at the same time, how thou didst rejoice to

have always near you God Himself, and to see the idols of the Egyptians fall

prostrate to the ground before Him.

By this sorrow and this joy, obtain for us the grace of keeping ourselves in safety

from the infernal tyrant, especially by flight from dangerous occasions; may

every idol of earthly affection fall from our hearts; may we be wholly employed

in serving Jesus and Mary, and for them alone may we live and happily die.

6. O glorious St. Joseph, an angel on earth, thou didst marvel to see the King of

Heaven obedient to thy commands, but thy consolation in bringing Jesus out of

the land of Egypt was troubled by thy fear of Archelaus; nevertheless, being as-

sured by the Angel, thou dwelt in the gladness at Nazareth with Jesus and Mary.

By this sorrow and this joy, obtain for us that our hearts may be delivered from

harmful fears, so that we may rejoice in peace of conscience and may live in

safety with Jesus and Mary and may, like these, die in their company.

7. O glorious St. Joseph, pattern of all holiness, when thou didst lose, through no

fault of thine own, the Child Jesus, thou sought Him sorrowing for the space of

three days, until with great joy thou didst find Him again in the Temple sitting in

the midst of the doctors.

By this sorrow and this joy, we supplicate thee, with our hearts upon our lips, to

keep us from ever having the misfortune to lose Jesus through mortal sin; but if

this supreme misfortune should befall us, grant that we may seek Him with

unceasing sorrow until we find Him again, ready to show us His great mercy,

especially at the hour of death; so that we may pass over to enjoy His presence in

heaven; and there, in company with thee may we sing the praises of His Divine

mercy forever.

Antiphon. And Jesus Himself was beginning about the age of thirty years, being

(as it was supposed) the Son of Joseph.

V. Pray for us, O holy Joseph,

R/. That we may be made worth of the promises of Christ.

Let us Pray…O God, Who in Thine ineffable Providence didst vouchsafe to

choose Blessed Joseph to be the spouse of Thy most Holy Mother, grant, we

beseech Thee, that we whom we venerate as our protector on earth may be our

intercessor in Heaven. Who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.
