e History of the Brothersrsquo House amp Statue of Blessed Edmund Ricee Brothersrsquo House (lsquoWoodeavesrsquo) with its grand Edwardian facade and statue of Blessed Edmund Rice on its front lawn gets passed on a daily basis by the students of St Ambrose College yet upon questioning my fellow Ambrosians it would seem that very little is known about what is oen simply called lsquothe big white housersquo I therefore thought that I would delve into the history of lsquoWoodeavesrsquo and pen a piece in this weekrsquos Principalrsquos Newsletter

In 1929 Leo Waugh a wealthy silk merchant with interests in the Far East brought his Catholic wife Marian and their seven children to live in Hale Barns e home they chose was a grand residence called lsquoWoodeavesrsquo originally built in 1915 and standing in 22 acres of beautiful parkland In 1941 Mary their eldest daughter died at lsquoWoodeavesrsquo and then in December 1944 Mr Waugh also passed away Bere with grief and in no need of such a large residence Mrs Waugh sold lsquoWoodeavesrsquo and its 22 acres of land to the Diocese of Shrewsbury and additionally gied them 5 acres of land in memory of her daughter Mary On this 5 acres of land stood the dilapidated Manor House once lived in by John Leigh himself the legendary Altrincham scientist e dream of a school for the Catholic boys of Hale Barns had been a dream long held by Canon John Donnelly of St Vincentrsquos Altrincham and in 1945 Bishop Ambrose gied lsquoWoodeavesrsquo and its 22 acres of parkland to the Congregation of Christian Brothers

e Brothers moved into lsquoWoodeavesrsquo on Christmas Eve in 1945 school furniture was delivered and tted during the Christmas holidays Two of the large downstairs rooms (one was previously Mr Waughrsquos billiards room) were converted into double classrooms whilst the outbuildings were converted into a school dining room changing rooms and toilet facilities And so from 1946 until 1952 St Ambrose College which rst consisted of 70 students and 5 Brothers was based at lsquoWoodeavesrsquo Interestingly from 1946 until 1963 the only Catholic Mass available in Hale Barns was held in a converted downstairs room at lsquoWo-odeavesrsquo known as the Brothersrsquo Chapel a priest from St Vincentrsquos would travel over from Altrincham to say Mass for a Sunday congregation of perhaps twenty Catholics

In an ecumenical gesture that I imagine was uncommon for the time the Vicar of All Saints Hale Barnsrsquo Anglican church used to lend his vestments to the Catholic priest for the Sun-day Mass In 1964 the parish church of Holy Angelsrsquo was built and whilst Sunday Mass transferred to the Church Mass continued to be said weekly in the Brothersrsquo Chapel on a Monday morning

History of lsquoWoodeavesrsquoBy Shane Fox - Youth Ambassador for the Edmund Rice International Group

Around the year 2000 the St Ambrose Parentsrsquo Association commissioned a large statue of Blessed Edmund Rice and installed it on the front lawn of lsquoWoodeavesrsquo as a tting tribute to the man himself It was noted recently by one of my fellow Ambrosians that the statuersquos condition was less than pristine (as can be seen from our photo taken earlier this week)

Many of us have a photo on our mobile phone or in our wallets as a reminder of our loved ones and to help focus our thoughts and hearts upon them a picture or statue of our Founder does the same job And much the same as we wouldnrsquot really want a photo of a loved one to get dog-eared or crumpled as pupils and sta of St Ambrose College an Edmund Rice school we decided that we didnrsquot want the statue of the Founder of the Congregation of Christian Brothers Blessed Edmund Rice to stay in its current rather dilapidated condition Our Edmund Rice International group at St Ambrose College has therefore decided to conduct the necessary stone restoration work under the guidance of Mr Krause and Mrs Lochery which we will begin in earnest next week In a future edition of the Principalrsquos Newsletter we will show you its (hopefully) much improved condition along with a few more pictures of history from the Chair of the Parentsrsquo Association at that time and current St Ambrose College Foundation Governor Mrs Kerr

I am very grateful to Old Boy Anthony OrsquoNeil former Deputy Headmaster Mr Fleming and the Holy Angelsrsquo parish website for the historical details that enabled me to bring this article to life

Grand Opening of the New Drama Studio

On Monday 21st November parents governors and staff were treated to an evening of performances by 5th year students to open the new drama studio The performances were also the studentsrsquo devised exam pieces and they had worked incredibly hard to write and perfect their own pieces

The studentsrsquo stimuli for this unit was Shakespearersquos lsquoRomeo and Julietrsquo most notably the opening and a workshop led by Manchester Youth Team on gangs and the impact being in a gang has on a personrsquos family The session was jointly led by Jackie Leigh a parent of one of the students in the class The boys thoroughly

enjoyed it and felt truly inspired by some of the stories and ideas that were shared during the session Thanks to all the students for four fantastic pieces They were mature witty and thoroughly engaging Thanks also to the staff and governors who helped make the dream of a drama studio a reality We have come a long way since the hall in the old school building and now have a space to call our own

Furthermore the addition of the state of the art facilities will enable students to achieve high grades in the technical aspects of theatre to match their current outstanding grades in acting

Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise Psalm 952
