———CALENDAR OF THE WEEK———

Dear Parishioners and Visitors,
I hope all is well with you. Over the next few
weekends (Feb 23 at St. Ambrose and March 2 at OLGC)
we will be celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation for
the first time with our young people, most of whom are in
the Second Grade, along with their families. It is the first
step to celebrating First Communion in the Spring. It is the
goal of the preparation process for First Reconciliation to
prepare children to see this Sacrament not as something to
be feared, but to be loved, as a way of coming to terms with
wrongs they may have committed, finding ways to shed
guilt, and grow in the love of God. As you can imagine, at
age 7, sin is not as complicated or serious as it is later in
life, and so how important for them to know that there is a
place one can go to talk out problems, judgment-free, and
know at the end of the conversation that they will be reaf-
firmed in love God has for them, despite whatever difficul-
ties they might be facing. Why this Sacrament should be
so feared or avoided is beyond me. And so it is up to us,
parents and grandparents alike, to not only encourage par-
ticipation in the Sacrament (and help kids to get there…
they can’t drive yet), but also to model with maturity a
healthy use of the Sacrament as a regular staple of the Spir-
itual Life.
Please pray for our young people receiving this
Sacrament for the first time in the next few weeks, but
above all, pray for all our young people who struggle with
the difficulties and messiness of life that, among other
forms of help and support, they will look also to the
Church, who provides in her goodness, a sacrament of heal-
ing, love, and forgiveness in the name of Christ our Re-
deemer.
Fr. Michael

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE from
the Office of Family Life Education (A
Hope Appeal Agency)
Don’t look very far when you hear today’s
gospel speak of poverty, sorrow, or exclusion. These things
happen in families. Children feel “insulted” when they are
constantly criticized. Spouses “hunger” for affection. Grand-
parents feel “excluded” by divorce and custody decisions.
Parents “weep” because they feel alienated from their chil-
dren.
