Parent Support Group meeting
We will have our next Parent Support Group meeting in Week 5 on Friday 1st June. The meeting will be held in the school library at 3:30pm. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Agenda items will include: School Uniform Fundraising Melbourne Excursion Student Wellbeing
Head Lice We have received news there may be another outbreak of head lice locally. Parents and Carers are reminded to keep vigilant and keep a regular check on your child’s scalp. If your child is suffering with an itchy head, visit the local pharmacy for advice on head lice treatments available.
‘Year of Youth’ Festival Tour For the Year of Youth, the Catholic Schools Office is hosting various events. All of our Year of Youth events are a response to the Australian Catholic Bishops call to celebrate youth and expand our horizons locally. These events will be a celebra-tion of the gift of young people and our Catholic faith expressed through music, exploring well being and responding to the call to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly. (Michah 6:8 NRSV) It is hoped all students attending will have: An experience of “joy and opening new horizons” for young people An authentic and personal engagement with young people from other schools, teachers, leaders and clergy An experience of dialogue - free to voice concerns, worries and/or questions, feel validated and supported through
hopeful and encouraging conversations A joyful experience of church and Catholic faith An immersive experience of learning in for faith, social justice, wellbeing and music Internationally acclaimed musician, John Angotti will be accompanied by secondary students for the Festival Tour. Sacred Heart students will visit Jerilderie Civic Hall on Monday 28th May to join in celebrations with the Wagga Youth Festival Tour. As we need to be ready for an 8:30am pickup we ask that students be at school at 8:15am on this day. This initiative is being funded by the Catholic Schools Office in Wagga.
6 Steps to Stamp our Math Anxiety ~ Jo Boaler’s Advice for Parents Encourage children to play maths puzzles and games. Puzzles and games - anything with
dice really - will help kids enjoy maths and develop number sense, which is critically im-portant.
Always be encouraging and never tell kids they are wrong when they are working on maths problems. Instead, find logic in their thinking. For example, if your child multiplies 3 by 4 and gets 7, say “Oh, I see what you are thinking. You are using what you know about addition to add 3 and 4. When we multiply, we have 4 groups of 3…..”
Never associate maths with speed. It isnot important to work quickly, and we now know that forcing kids to work quickly on maths is the best way to start anxiety for children, especially girls.
Never share with your children the idea that you were bad at maths at school or you dislike it - especially if you are a mother. Researchers found that as soon as mothers shared that idea with their daughters, their daughter’s achievement went down.
Encourage number sense. What separates high and low achievers is having an idea of the size of numbers and being able to separate and combine numbers flexibly, For example, when solving 29 + 56, if you take one from the 56 make it 30+55, it is much easier to work out.
Perhaps most important of all: Encourage a “growth mindset” ot let students know that they have limited maths potential and that being good at maths is all about working hard. When they tell you something is hard for them or they have made a mistake, tell them “ That’s wonderful - your brain is growing!”
