In the gospel over the past few weeks, we have been hearing a great deal about faith. It is extremely important for us to realize that faith is not a thing; rather, it is a person. Our faith is rooted in Jesus

Christ. We embrace the gift of faith when we em-brace Christ. We do not embrace a feeling or an idea. We hold on to a person; we hold on to Christ. Often I hear people make the comment that they have lost their faith. That, to me, seems impossible. If faith is the person of Jesus Christ, then we can never lose Christ. He is always with us. He is always at our side. We may distance ourselves from Him by our sins; but, we can never lose Him. To lose faith means that Christ has abandoned us. We know this will never happen. Have faith, therefore, in the person of Jesus Christ. Know that it is through the gift of faith, Jesus, that we have forgiveness of our sins and courage to face any and all challenges.

At the moment, there are already close to a dozen official or unofficial candidates for the presidency with perhaps more to come, both Republicans and Democrats. What should a Catholic expect from candidates? First, to foster the common good of all citizens. What does this mean? It means respect for the person as such. In the name of the common good, public authorities are bound to respect the fun-damental rights of the human person. Society should permit each of its members to fulfill his or her voca-tion.
