Good afternoon Reverend Fathers and Sisters, School Board members, Honored Guests, Teachers, Staff, Parents, Families, Friends, and most importantly, my fellow Graduates of 2015. I am truly honored that I have been selected as this year’s valedictorian.
As I thought about the message that I wanted to relay to my fellow class-mates, I couldn’t stop think-ing about a certain quote from Christopher Morely… “There is only one success — to be able to spend your life in your own way.”
I found this to be an interesting statement. Over the last several months we have been focused on basic-ally the rest of our lives. We have been worrying about choosing the right path. The right career to pursue. We have been given all types of advice. Some of us may already be regretting some of our choices or worrying about the choices and deci-sions we have yet to make. Some of us might be fearful for what the future holds.
Well let me tell you, in Grade 8 I had teachers tell me that high school was going to be very difficult and that I should start prepar-ing myself for the changes. When I got to high school I
had no problems at all. Now I have high school teachers and other students telling me how difficult university is going to be.
Yet, I don’t believe them because I still think Grades 7 and 8 were my most diffi-cult school years. The point is, I certainly do not want to waste summer thinking about all the difficulties that I will have to face because I know that when I am faced with these obstacles that I will find a way to get through them. Nobody knows our future and we cannot be afraid of the unknown. I want to encourage you all to live
without regrets. Part of growing up is mak-
ing mistakes. Sometimes the mistakes we make will lead us on the right path. Just live every moment in the present (and that means putting your cell phones down when you come back to visit your fam-ilies!)
Now some of us are choos-ing to continue our educa-tion while some of us are choosing to enter the work-force. Whatever your dreams and aspirations are, I say go for it. The only person who can measure our success is ourselves. Don’t settle for anything less than what you know you are capable of, but don’t be afraid to set your goals higher. Don’t let any-one tell you that you are not capable of achieving some-thing. We get to choose who we want to be and what we achieve. Be the best version of yourself that you can be.
I think it is fitting time to quickly give thanks to our role models… our parents. From day one they have been there for us to encourage and love us. I want all the parents to know that I have grown up with these Graduates and you have all raised compas-sionate, smart, and talented people!
I have come to know amaz-ing athletes, artists, dancers,
actors, scholars, and even video game enthusiasts! I have been truly blessed to have grown up with each and every one of them because these are the people who have impacted my life the most. From seeing everyone almost every day of the week to maybe never again is diffi-cult to imagine but I am truly thankful that I have had the chance to be a part of their lives.
We must also give recogni-tion to our teachers. Thank you for teaching us not only school lessons, but life les-sons as well. Thank you for answering our endless ques-tions, well more like my end-less questions.
Anyways I want to share a few things I’ve learned from my most recent teachers. From Mr. Grella I’ve learned that you can’t talk and lis-ten at the same time. He told me this many times as I continued to talk in class. From Ms. Sterzuk I learned to be passionate about the things I love and that hard work pays off. Mrs. Hartman taught me how to be compas-sionate for others and how to wear my heart on my sleeve. Last but not least, Mr. Digout taught me every grammar trick there is. He also taught me how to properly staple an essay!! Apparently I staple
them too far away from the corner.
Ok, getting serious again. I know this is an emotional time for many of us. My last piece of advice is to remem-ber that High School should not be the best years of your life because each new year should be your best year. Today is not the end, but rather the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. Today is the day our lives as adults truly begin. We will now have to be accountable for more than our curfew and our grades. We will have to work hard and pay bills!
Take the life lessons we have learned and start apply-ing them to the situations we will face. Although we are leaving Sacred Heart High School, we are leaving with full hearts ready to embark on an exciting new adven-ture. I know all of you will make many new memories, you will have many new experiences, and meet many new people. Embrace this time and never let an oppor-tunity pass you by. Wake up willing to learn, to love, and to find your joy. Make your own success and make it your way. I wish you all the best in whatever you choose to do and may God Bless your journey!
Hailey Vitkauskas
