Simon Whitfield has been praised for his passionate expression on Twitter, but a civil suit filed last week suggests his comments on a former Saanich-based triathlete coach may have gone too far.

In an email, Whitfield said he hasn’t yet been served with documents filed by Patrick Kelly, the former coach of Paula Findlay, an athlete who finished dead last in the women’s triath-lon of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

In a notice of civil claim filed Aug. 1 in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, Kelly says his reputation within the international triathlon community has been damaged by com-ments made by Whitfield after Findlay’s disappoint-ing Olympic result.

Whitfield’s 2012 tweet reads: “gutted 2c Paula so upset. There are some peo-ple who need to be held accountable here, total incompetence before they jumped ship. #shameful.”

At just over three months, Mia is one smart puppy. She stops at every curb and door she comes across and is now learning to do the same for escalators.

On a sunny Tuesday morning, Mia weaves through a precari-

ously designed obstacle of cones, baby gates, tissues, balls and other natural street distractions during her B.C. Guide Dogs class in the lacrosse box of Topaz Park.

It’s the life of a guide dog in train-ing, but when it’s play time, there’s no mistaking Mia as just another playful pup, jumping and rolling with the rest of her class.

“It’s all work on the leash and play time can only be off lead, when we allow it,” says Pierre Gagne, one half of Mia’s puppy rais-ing team along with partner Mar-lene Homan.

Gagne is self-employed and works from his Victoria home, which make he and Homan ideal candidates.

It’s their first time raising a puppy for the B.C. Guide Dogs and the organization is looking for more puppy raisers in the Greater Vic-toria area as three litters become available for both September and October.

It’s no accident

Sheila ReynoldsBlack Press

Varinder Badh had been in hospital for two days before she was told she’d never see her parents alive again.

That final evening had begun joyfully, with a party celebrating the engagement of Varinder’s youngest sister, Rupi, on July 12, 2008.

After the family get-together, Rupi, Varinder and their parents headed home in the same car – Rupi at the wheel, Varinder in the front passenger seat and their parents tucked in the back seat.

They were driving in Surrey when they were struck from behind by a speeding driver. Dilbag, 61, and his 60-year-old wife, Bakhshish, died at the scene, and Rupi and Varinder were seriously injured.

In the weeks following the crash, a traumatized Varinder began leafing through newspaper accounts and found herself exacerbated by what she read.

“I kept seeing the word ‘accident’ over and over again,” she said. “It started really bothering me because I had this feeling people would think we were somehow in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

It took four long years before Ravinder Binning, who was at the wheel of the car that hit them, was sentenced to four years in prison for the deaths.

Today, Badh is taking some much-needed time off after completing her doctorate in social science at Royal Roads University earlier this summer. The Greater Victoria mom and former criminology instructor chose to engage with her deep psychological scars of losing her parents by tackling the issue head-on in her research.

“If you think of the term ‘accident,’ there’s a social connotation that’s been given to it. We think of chance or God’s will or fate,” Badh said. “We remove the accountability and responsibility. So if we label these incidents in a neutral way, then perhaps the accountability and accountability becomes stronger.”

As Binning’s trial dragged on, Badh and her siblings began advocating for tougher sentences for dangerous driving causing death or injury, to better reflect the severity of the crime. While vehicular homicide charges exist in the U.S., Canada has no parallel criminal charge.

Feedback showed people generally agreed hit-and-runs – especially fatal ones – are unacceptable. But Varinder kept wondering: “Why is it people still aren’t getting it?”

Her PhD dissertation focused on five randomly selected cases of vehicular negligence. She interviewed family members of people killed in crashes, as well as survivors.

What they told her echoed her own views. They were frustrated by words such as accident, often feeling re-victimized as the terms sounded negative or appeared to shift blame back on the victim.

She also spoke to police and other first responders, who expressed extreme dismay at the use of the word accident for incidents that

clearly weren’t. “The objectivity in my research was a

difficult one, but with my supervisor and internal committee, they really kept me in line to ensure I had a venting outlet but that I remained objective,” she said.

Since the crash, Varinder has undergone two unsuccessful surgeries to remedy hearing loss

and is still going through active rehabilitation to address migraines, neck, shoulder and back problems, numbness and tingling in her legs and vertigo issues.

She admits she used to use the word “accident” without thinking twice.

“I’m just as guilty as anyone,” Badh said. “Had I

never had this experience, I would never have thought twice about car crashes. I felt sorry for them in the moment, but it didn’t affect me beyond that.”

She’s since learned that the leading cause of death worldwide is car crashes. She’s also learned that the average person attributes the resulting injuries or fatalities to fate or bad luck.

Her research, she hopes, will help shift people’s perceptions. She plans to meet with

influential people and organizations, including former Attorney General Wally Oppal, who was also one of three people on her dissertation committee. She also plans to return to teaching and continue her research into the social impact of labelling car crashes.

“The more people read it, the more they talk about it, the more knowledge there is,” Badh said. “If this just sparks a conversation in a household, that’s huge.”

She has dedicated her research to her parents, husband, daughter and other victims and survivors of road crashes “for whom I argue this research has provided a voice.”

When Binning finally pled guilty to his driving charges in February 2012, he read an apology before the court and the Badh family. In it, he reasoned that what happened on that tragic night could have happened to anyone.

“It was a complete accident,” he [email protected]

ICBC is preparing to mail out 309,000 refund cheques ranging from $1 to $350 to optional auto insurance customers it over-charged since 2008.

Wrong rates were used because of incor-rect descriptions assigned years ago to many vehicles that are only now being fixed.

The average customer who overpaid all six years will get a refund of around $108, ICBC spokesman Adam Grossman said. The cheques will begin to go out around Aug. 20.

The average overpayment was $18 per year.

The refunds plus interest being paid total nearly $38 million.

Nearly 370,000 other motorists were undercharged because of the glitches.

ICBC won’t go after them for the $53 mil-lion in lost revenue.

The faulty vehicle descriptions affected only optional insurance, not basic rates.

The refunds were calculated as part of two independent external reviews that checked millions of insurance transactions over the past six years.

Auditors who examined ICBC’s handling

of the issue concluded ICBC knew the problem was systemic as early as 2009 but management hid it from ICBC’s board of directors until mid-2013.

Various fixes were contemplated but dis-carded, according to the auditors’ report.

ICBC managers feared a solution might harm its relationship with brokers and that disclosure of inaccurate pricing would hurt ICBC’s business position against optional insurance competitors.

The corporation ultimately opted to fix the errors and issue refunds as part of its sweeping $400-million technology upgrade program.

The long-running overcharges were finally made public in April by Transpor-tation Minister Todd Stone – only after he was directly questioned by the media.

ICBC’s board had intended to wait until it had a refund strategy ready to roll out.

Customers renewing their auto insur-ance since July have been required to update their vehicle’s descriptions, Gross-man said.

The error isn’t expected to recur because ICBC’s modernized system will pull the correct description from the vehicle identi-fication numbers, instead of being entered manually by Autoplan agents.

Keaton Gudz erased a bogey start with a pair of birdies and cruised to an even-par 72 to win the Canadian Junior Golf Association’s Mizuno national junior boys (age 15-19) championship Friday in St. Catharine’s, Ont.

Gudz, a Saanich resident who plays out of Royal Colwood and Highland Pacific courses and is going into Grade 11 at Spectrum community school, finished at an even par 288 for the four-round tournament.

He edged Josh Montgomery of Ancaster,

Ont. by two strokes for the victory.

Having posted earlier scores of 71, 75 and 70 on the Rockaway Vineyards course, Gudz sat tied for the lead with Mitchell McLeod of Shanty Bay, Ont. at 216 after three rounds. McLeod shot six-over 78 on Friday to finish six strokes back in fourth.

Last month in Pitt Meadows, Gudz warmed up for nationals by winning the B.C. junior boys championship at the Meadow Gardens course.

In that event, he held off a hard-

charging Curtis Chan of Richmond Golf Club by birdieing the final hole to win by a stroke at 283. Chan, who was 7-under by the 11th hole, shot 65 to better Gudz’ previous tournament low of 67 from the third round.

Rows of shining vehicles will help keep a pair of sparkling health foundations highlighting community and kid health this year.

The German Auto Import Network hosts the 2014 Vancouver Island Motor Gathering on Aug. 17 with funds raised supporting the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Vancouver Island and the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation.

For many years, under many different names, the car show was held on the grounds of the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s Health. It has decades old roots as a fundraiser for what is now called the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Vancouver Island.

“It is a longstanding community event, it has raised awareness,” said Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island CEO Linda Hughes.

It has also raised tens of thousands of dollars for the cause, she added. This year the funds raised will go toward early intervention

for children’s health.“When a child is born and

you know that child is facing some health challenges … The earlier some strategies can be learned and extra assistance, the more prepared they are as they become older,” Hughes said. “They can become all they can be [and] be included in their family and community.”

Despite being “not a sophisticated car aficionado” she finds the show amazing with a blend of new and old cars, and some unique vehicles. This year the show includes motorcycles as well.

“They’re amazingly kept and people take such pride in these vehicles,” said Hughes.

Pride in vehicles is something the German Auto Import Network shares and part of the reason they took over organization of the event last year.

“We love cars. This is our business and it’s just

something we feel we can do,” said Cindy Mui, marketing director, German Auto Import Network.

“We raised over $52,000 and that was just in cash. This year, we wanted to be able to support another local charity as well.”

They added the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation, that funds equipment and programs

at their community hospital fit their desire for a charity with community roots. The SPHF current campaign is to raise 2.4 million for a

CT scanner. It has raised 2.3 million to date and will also host a live auction of a 1990 Rolls Royce at 1 p.m. during the Vancouver Island Motor Gathering.

“These charities seemed like a fit for us … we support as much local as possible. That’s our main focus,” Mui said.

Black Press staff, representing Island-wide community newspapers will

put their efforts forward as well.

Working with the Salmon Farmers Association of B.C. and Truffles Catering they’ll host a by-donation salmon burger barbecue with proceeds going to the two charities the event supports.

Join us for a day of family fun and an exciting lineup of cars and motorcycles alongside entertainment, pedal cars, remote controlled cars, a bouncy castle and more.

The Vancouver Island Motor Gathering is Aug. 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Viscount Aero Centre, 9800 McDonald Park Rd. in Sidney. Visit motorgathering.com to learn more and register.

Pre-registration closes on August 13 at 5 p.m. Cost is $25 for vehicle entry, $2 for spectators.

Cosmetic Advantages

Many people choose to wear contact lenses instead of their glasses for the cos-metic advantage. They fit closely to your eyes so that few people notice that you are wearing corrective lenses. However, this is just one of several advantages of wearing contact lenses.

Contacts permit a wider field of vision than eyeglasses. There is no frame to get in your line of sight when you look to the left, right, up or down. The close fit presents a less distorted and more realistic view of the world around us. A tendency to allow for more efficient eye coordination is still an-other advantage, particularly in sports.

They do require more conscientious care than glasses, because they must be kept clean, free of irritants and harmful bacteria. If you think you would like to wear contacts, ask your Optometrist if he or she would rec-ommend them for you.

Cordova Bay Blackout hitter Ali Knight connects during the Western Canadian U18B championships in Battleford, Sask., last week. The softball team went on to win the event.

No sooner had Sydney Mur-phy smashed a single into the outfield on Aug. 4, than the Cor-dova Bay Blackout raced onto the field to celebrate their vic-tory as Western Canadian U18B Softball champions in Battleford, Sask., on Monday (Aug. 4).

Murphy’s hit drove in the final two runs in an 8-0, mercy-rule win over the Saskatoon Selects.

It’s the Blackout’s first West-ern title in its second-straight trip to the tournament, and win-ning it is the ideal end to the girls’ youth softball careers, said coach Derek Brooker.

“Winning the championship beside teammates who I’ve played with for six years makes it special. It took a while but we finally did it,” said co-captain Emi Horne.

The Blackout sailed through the tournament and won all eight games behind the lights out pitching of Mia Brooker and

Kaitlyn Tucker. More impor-tantly, the pitchers were sup-ported with big runs from big hits.

Six players hit over .400 for the tournament. Brooker helped her own cause as three of her 10 hits were triples, and four more were doubles.

Blackout hitters combined for 70 runs scored, an average of 8.75 runs per game, while giving up just 10 runs against.

Leading the Blackout offense was Emily Cox’s .550 batting average, Parksville Rage pickup Sierra Spracklin’s 14 hits, and Mia Brooker’s 10 runs batted in.

Mia Brooker and Kaitlyn Tucker handled all the pitching. Brooker threw 35 strikeouts in 29 innings, with six wins and a

0.97 earned run average. Tucker threw 19 innings with eight strikeouts, two wins and a 2.95 ERA.

“Coaches Dan Murphy and Ivan Chow and I are so happy for the girls. They’ve been close over the years and to finally win it all in their last game together is fitting,” said Derek Brooker.

The Blackout are back-to-back Provincial silver medalists, hav-ing lost a “heartbreaking provin-cial final in extra innings to the Surrey Storm” last month.

“Coming to Battleford, the girls felt they had unfinished business,” said Derek Brooker.

Throughout the tournament the Blackout defeated the Bat-tleford Bandits 11-2, Moose Creek  Jays 7-2, Southern (Man.) Bandits 12-4, Marwayne (Alta.) Renegades 8-1, and Killam (Alta.) Thunder 9-3, Saskatoon Selects 6-5, Southern Bandits 10-3.

Horne will play softball for the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Trojans this year.

The Lambrick Park Royals closed out another championship season in the senior men’s South Island Baseball League with a 3-0 win over the Carnarvon Dodgers to sweep the best-of-three final series in two games last Tuesday (Aug. 5).

The Royals had won Game 1 of the final 8-4 one night earlier.

It’s the third time (2010, 2011) the Royals have won the South Island championship since the league started five years ago.

It also came as a bit of a sur-prise, as the Royals (8-7) used some clutch hitting to knock first place Layritz (13-2) out of the semifinals in their successful run.

The league is described as a junior circuit, part of the Greater Victoria Baseball Association, and slightly less competitive than the Mavericks league.

2013CCNABLUE

RIBBON

OUR VIEW

The B.C. government’s intentions for the Agricultural Land Reserve have been clarified by a public consultation that proposes new commercial and industrial uses on farmland.

Political watchers may recall that this was the hill the NDP was prepared to die on this spring.

It was going to be a farmland looting spree for right-wing property developers and all hope of “food security” would be dashed.

As I attempted to explain at the time, the changes have little or nothing to do with ALR exclusions. Now a discussion paper poses a series of questions, some of which illustrate the need to bring farmland regulations up to date.

The first one deals with restrictions on retail sales, a case study in arbitrary state control.

There is a strict maximum floor space. A minimum one half of retail sales must be produced on that farm. Food packing, preparation and processing are similarly restricted.

This requires multiple duplicate operations of questionable viability. It brings to mind Mao Tse Tung’s Great Leap Forward, where farmers all had little iron smelting furnaces out back to make tools. But I digress.

“Amongst other things,” the discussion paper says, “lessening

the restrictions on on-farm processing could allow the establishment of abbatoirs (large, small or mobile) on farms, to serve surrounding cattle, game or poultry

farms.” Then there’s cheese, fruit juice and even medical marijuana products.

And did you know that wineries and cideries are allowed on farmland but breweries, distilleries and meaderies aren’t? (Mead is made from honey, and doesn’t have to be drunk from a bronze mug while wearing a horned helmet.)

Now that we’ve discovered that breweries don’t have to be giant urban industrial plants producing mediocre lager that all tastes the same, possibilities abound. On-farm wine and cider sales have similarly quaint retail space and product origin restrictions. The government proposes to allow sales of products not made on site, as long as they’re made in B.C. This could make more local retail beverage co-ops viable. Or it could spawn a wave of unregulated rural liquor stores that create chaos on country roads. You decide.

On a more serious note, there are a couple of questions about changes to the newly created “zone two,” the Interior, Kootenay and North regions.

One repeats the government’s

intention to open up non-farm use rules to allow certain oil and gas service functions on farmland. This is to reflect the reality already on the ground in the Northeast.

What other non-farm activities it may entail are not yet known, as the consultation and regional meetings continue until Aug. 22. There are proposals to bypass the Agricultural Land Commission for certain kinds of farmland subdivision in zone two. These are where the subdivided parcels are a quarter section (160 acres) or bigger, or where they are divided by a road or waterway.

And finally there are proposed exemptions from ALC scrutiny of leases, to allow “intergenerational transfer,” so retiring farmers don’t have to plead for state permission to remain on their own property.

Another exemption would “encourage the use of otherwise unfarmed land by existing or new farmers.”

NDP agriculture critic Lana Popham, who circulated a photo of herself with a samurai sword in a theatrical “Kill Bill 24” campaign, continues to insist that these changes open up 90 per cent of ALR land for “development.”

It’s a hypocritical as well as a misleading statement, since a portion of her own Saanich farm property is rented to a successful craft gin distillery.

BCTF will be pushed to settle

The provincial government is predictably getting flak from the B.C. Teachers Federation and the NDP over a promise to pay parents of children (up to 12) $40 per day for each school day missed in September pending the continuance of the teachers’ strike.

While the move is certainly political, it does recognize the fact that parents are hit hard by the strike through extra daycare and other costs.

The government saves a boatload of money – $12 million a day – as a result of the strike. It is not unreasonable to share some of those savings with residents who are suffering finacially as a result of their stay-at-home kids.

It also should serve as a reminder to BCTF members that there will be no paycheques in September if the strike isn’t settled by then.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong is right that it would do little good to legislate teachers back to work. That tactic has been used far too often in the past. There needs to be a handshake agreement between the two sides to bury the hatchet and to regain the trust of students and parents.

The bargaining system involving the two sides is in terrible shape, but hard negotiations could result in an agreement — if there is some genuine willingness on the part of both sides to do so.

Teachers who are caught up in this dispute will have to carefully consider their actions over the next month or so. Many are already feeling the financial squeeze. Several weeks out of work in September will really hurt, particularly as their strike fund has been depleted.

The government holds almost all the cards. It will face no political pressure of consequence with an election still three years away. Settlements with other unions are also putting pressure on the BCTF to toe the line. The question is, how long will it take? Let’s hope kids don’t pay the price again by losing instruction time this fall.

LETTERSUVic novelty coursesnothing to celebrate

Re: Unique courses abound at University of Victoria (News, Aug. 6

The praise of the University of Victoria by Don Descoteau (Saa-nich News Aug 6) seems mis-placed when you consider that in the Times Higher Education supplement of world university rankings for 2014, UVic comes in at No. 224. I predict that when the farcical courses promoted by Descoteau are taken into consideration for the 2015 rank-ings, UVic will be lucky to make it above the Turkey Agricultural College at 356.

Mining disastera predictable result

The B.C. Lollipop Party, which promises riches but is misman-aging the provincial government in so many ways, has hit a new low.

The totally preventable catas-trophe that has devastated the Cariboo region and the entire Fraser River watershed is a result of negligence on the part of the Minister of Energy and Mines.

Bill Bennett is much more interested in cutting regulations, reducing inspectors, developing new projects and lobbying the federal government for approv-als of dubious projects than pro-tecting the lives, livelihoods and environment of the citizens of British Columbia.

The loss of fishing and tourism could cost many jobs and up to 1,000 mining jobs, a result of a lack of attention to many warn-ings over many years.

I suggest that the Premier order the Minister of Energy and Mines and the invisible Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources Operations to walk the plank to take responsibility for neglecting to execute their authorities. Then, she should consider following them into the “almost drinkable” drink herself.

Cadboro-Gyro Parkplan could be better

Mayor Leonard’s claim that opposition to Gyro park upgrades has gone on for 28 years has everything with trying to paint himself as the sole champion for “prog-ress.” The facts speak differ-ently.

Park users and the local community has been clam-oring for upgrades for decades, to address winter flooding of the park, par-ticularly its playground and parking lot, that make them unusable for much of the year.

In response, Saanich Parks has developed a number of plans over the years, none of which have addressed the basic concerns of flooding. Instead, they have proposed adding paths that encroach on the popular multi-use central field, and a lot of additions such as an amphitheatre, a parking lot at the Cadboro Bay Road entrance.

In short, public sup-

port for each of these plans was lacking, leading Saa-nich to favour a “You can’t please everybody, so, lets not bother, and get on with it” attitude.

A significant factor in Saa-nich’s failure to develop a broadly supported park plan has been their inability to listen to the public. Instead, they focused on selling their own plans, disregarding pub-lic input.

By contrast the Cadboro Bay Residents Association Parks Committee (2013), through community engage-ment and active listening has shown that it is possible to develop a broadly supported park plan. What prevented Saanich and the mayor from supporting this plan?

Mayor needs check in Gyro Park claim

Re: Gyro Park upgrades get new pathway (News, Aug. 6)

In response to your article where Mayor Frank Leonard stated: “I’ve been wanting to upgrade that park for 28 years, and always run into neighbourhood opposition.”

For Mayor Leonard to cloak himself as the sole champion of improved accessibility is just a cheap election ploy, given there is no opposition to that principle – it is like motherhood.

The issue is whether four-metre wide black-topped roads are the answer, or, whether 1.5-metre, greener, accessibility friendly surfacing would be preferred by the people being served – namely those with accessibility problems – is the answer.

They too like to go to a park to get away from urbanization. But, no one has asked them. Saanich decided for them that they want a black-topped path and that a four-metre wide black-topped road (wider than the Galloping Goose Regional Trail) is even better than a path.

Park user interviews and a Gyro Park Stakeholders workshop held in March 2013 have shown very broad support for preserving the natural values of Cadboro-Gyro Park.

Improved accessibility can be achieved without violating this shared value, and can even be shared by people with accessibility issues. Saanich’s answer: pave paradise. Go figure.

British Columbia has many iconic species, but one of the best known lives just off the coast – the Orca Whale.

Orca Whales are also referred to as Killer Whales and Blackfish. Historically, Orcas were very misunderstood and thought to be terribly dangerous; however research on these exquisite mammals began to show just how remarkable and complex they really are.

These black and white beauties are found around the world, but there are three different ecotypes that exist off the coast of British Columbia – the Residents, Bigg’s and Offshores.

One of the best ways to separate Offshores, Bigg’s and Residents, apart from a few physical differences, is by the food they prefer. Not much is really known about the Offshores as they spend so much time far off the coast. However, it was recently confirmed that they can and do eat sharks, particularly sleeper sharks.

Bigg’s (formally known as Transients), named after Canadian scientist Dr. Michael Bigg, eat other marine mammals. These mammals include everything from dolphins to seals to even other whales. Bigg’s, also enjoy playing with their food and can be seen putting on extravagant shows by throwing their dinner high into the air – a rather morbid, but oddly fascinating thing to watch.

Finally, the Residents, which can be seen throughout the gulf Islands and off Oak Bay (mostly in late spring and summer) love fish. Residents eat many kilograms (some 225 kilograms a day) of salmon, their favourite being Chinook.

Residents find salmon

through echolocation, a process similar to that used by bats, where they send out a “ping” and wait for a return signal off a fish.

Echolocation is a very important tool for Orcas along with the other ways that they use and produce sound. While there is much to discuss – like the Orca’s social structure, intelligence or behaviours – I will focus on one amazing aspect of this creature, how they “view” their world –

through sound.Humans are

extremely visual beings and tend to use our sense of sight above our other senses to explore our world.

Orca whales, on the other hand, rely on sound, especially to communicate with family and for finding prey. Orca whales make several different sounds

including clicks, whistles and calls; the tone, frequency and pitch of these sounds can tell scientists which ecotype (and often pod) of whale is vocalizing.

Different groups of Orcas can sound very different to a trained ear. For example, the Southern Residents are split up into pods J, K and L. Each of these pods can speak to each other, but have a unique dialect.

An analogy would be like a Brit, an Aussie and a Canadian all speaking to each other – they all speak English, all understand each other, but there are some words or phrases that the other groups may not fully comprehend. Although Residents and Bigg’s are often inhabiting the same area, they don’t speak to each other at all, not even realizing they are similar species.

The vocalizations of an Orca are beautiful, almost haunting. In some portions of their calls you can hear their emotions

and almost sense how they feel. Vocalizations of marine mammals are captured by underwater microphones, called hydrophones that passively listen to the world around them.

Depending on the frequency of the hydrophone, it can pick up an Orca from several kilometres away.

Hydrophones are used not only because they are passive instruments, but also because Orcas only spend about five per cent of their time at the surface, thus visual surveys and photo identification can be difficult.

Since humans are such visual creatures, hydrophone data can also be displayed as a spectrogram, which allows scientists to see the frequency of the sound as a graph.

Certain types of vocalizations have certain frequency outputs so trained scientists can look through spectrograms and identify interesting sections to listen too.

Hydrophones also pick up human-induced noise, such as shipping and sonar. More research is underway to better understand the effect of anthropogenic noise on marine mammals, specifically those that vocalize and use echolocation, like Orcas.

To hear the vocalization of Orcas and other whales log onto oceannetworks.ca and explore Ocean Networks Canada’s audio gallery (in the “Sights and Sounds” page) – be prepared to be amazed.

To learn more about whales and to report if you see one, visit the BC Cetaceans Sightings Network, run through the Vancouver Aquarium at vanaqua.org.

Combining her passions for edu-cation and the marine ecosystem,

Natasha Ewing inspires K-12 teachers and students to incorpo-rate hands-on experiential ocean

science into the classroom for Ocean Networks Canada.

Be Septic Savvy This SummerPLEASE KEEP OFF THE GRASS.

TIP SIX

It’s important to make sure your drainfield is left as undisturbed as possible. To protect your septic drainfield, a layer of grass is the best cover. Mow it to keep weeds down and leave it undisturbed. No parking, driving or building on it. And divert downspouts away from the drainfield to avoid saturation.

Stay informed.

A bylaw is in effect in Saanich,

Colwood, Langford & View Royal, stay informed about the

requirements for your septic system.

Get your Septic Savvy Household Info Kit at your municipal hall or visit crd.bc.ca/septic for more tips and resources, or to register for a free workshop.

Saanich’s Dakota Stallard.

Pageant life a new world for athlete

Travis PatersonNews staff

Dakota Stallard didn’t know she was the “pag-eant type.”

A soccer player and dancer, the Saanich resi-dent was noticed by a former beauty contestant through her dance studio, Vibe Street Dance.

Now, just weeks before the start of school, the 15-year-old Mount Douglas secondary student will be competing at Miss Teen Canada Globe in Toronto. The Miss Teen Canada Globe competi-tion is for teens aged 13 to 18, and ends on Aug. 23.

“My whole family is onboard, though at first I wasn’t,” says Stallard, who was scouted by former Miss Teen Canada winner from 2012, Natalie Zach-ary, also from Saanich.

“At first I didn’t consider myself a pageant-type girl. I’m more into sports and playing soccer (with Saanich Fusion), and not wearing high heels. This summer I’ve been learning to walk in heels,” she added.

The Gordon Head resident believes she’s the only contestant from the South Island, though the list hadn’t been finalized when she departed. There are no localized qualifying competitions, but Stallard will participate in a Miss Teen B.C. contest during the Miss Teen Canada seven-day regional assessment. The assessments are also a time to study the art of the pageant, as Stallard will attend workshops on the how-to’s of the runway and public speaking.

Winning Miss B.C. would give her a leg up, she says, in the Miss Teen Canada competition, but it’s not necessary.

“There’s a lot to do. Before I even leave, I have to submit an essay for the written component,” Stallard said.

That’s where judges will read about her extra-curricular activities, including volunteer and fun-draising work. Stallard has helped survivors and patients participate in the Walk for Leukaemia, among other endeavours.

Last month, she and her Vibe Street Dance group ran a major fundraiser to help recover from a break-in at the studio, the day before her group’s year-end recital. Money and several items were stolen.

“Even our handmade costumes were taken that we designed for our year-end performance. The fundraiser went really well and raised back a lot of money that was lost. We were really well sup-ported in a huge dance show with dancers from across the community.”

If Stallard wins Miss Teen Canada Globe, she’ll donate the $4,000 prize to Blue Wave, which helps teenagers with depression and social anxiety.

Stallard’s formal dress will represent her heri-tage, as she’s half Chinese and one-quarter Aborig-inal.

“It’s a Chinese traditional dress that my mom wore at her wedding, and I’ll wear a dreamcatcher on my wrist.”

Guide dogs need homes

Retired couples are often best suited, or others in a position such as Gagne’, says local puppy rais-ing supervisor Laura Mahoney.

Classes are outside at Topaz but Mahoney is hoping to move indoors if the space is made avail-able through a willing donor.

“We’ve been outside for 10 years, which is just fine during the beautiful summer days we’re hav-ing, but year round is tough,” says Mahoney.

Other cities are able to use donated facility time, such as in churches, but with a limited budget, the local B.C. Guide Dogs chapter will remain outside for the foreseeable future.

As for the puppies, they’re placed with ideal can-didates for puppy raising at seven weeks old and live with the puppy raiser up to 18 months. The dogs are actually bred by BC Guide Dogs in Delta, a cross between lab and retriever. They graduate through a series of programs and ideally become a guide dog for vision impairment. Should the ani-mals fall short of the rigid requirements, they are still highly capable and are placed with the family of someone with autism.

Anyone interested in applying as a puppy raiser can contact Laura Mahoney at 250-413-3095 or by email at [email protected].

Kelly has history in Saanich sports

Kelly now coaches in Hong Kong with the Hong Kong Sports Institute, but says in the claim that his reputation within the international triathlon com-munity has been damaged by Whitfield’s tweet and additional comments overheard among jour-nalists that day, and later reported in media inter-views.

Whitfield hadn’t been served and was still wait-ing to respond, though he confirmed having read about the lawsuit in local newspapers.

Kelly’s background goes far back in Victoria. He was part of the city’s first wave of triathletes in the early 1980s. As well as coaching Canada’s elites like Findlay, Kelly was best known in Greater Vic-toria as the National Triathlon Centre program co-ordinator for most of the last decade. The NTC was based out of Saanich Commonwealth Place, where Kelly coached dozens of up-and-coming junior tri-athletes (16 to 23), including 2016 Olympic hope-fuls Kirsten Sweetland (25) and Matt Sharpe (23) of Saanich, who recently represented Canada at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Findlay was a medal favourite in London due to her success in the ITU World Cup series, though the coaching relationship ended in the weeks prior to the London Games.

Whitfield, a two-time Olympic medalist and Can-ada’s flag bearer in London, tweeted in earnest during the women’s London Games triathlon.

between three events, a 2.5-kilometre walk, a five-kilometre fun run or a five-kilometre timed run sponsored by the Running Room.

“The walk and the fun run are both free to participate in and are a way for us to get peo-ple out to support the foundation and raise awareness,” said Jamie Boittiaux, one of the event’s organizers.

For the timed run, participants are asked to pre-register ($35) online at victoriakid-neywalk.ca. Race day registration is $40.

“Last year we had around 100 people come out and partici-pate so we’re hoping to surpass that this year,” said Boittiaux, who is also a kidney patient and well aware of the benefits of the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

“I only became more involved with the foundation in the last couple of years,” she explained.

“I’ve had three kid-ney surgeries and a kid-ney removed and after-wards I felt so alone. When I got involved with the Victoria chap-ter of the foundation I found that I wasn’t alone at all. My hope is that all people who are newly diagnosed with kidney problems will know they have some-

where to turn and the Victoria Kidney Walk helps with that.”

The funds raised through the walks, which happen all over B.C. and Canada this month and next, go to the Kidney Foundation which supports people like Boittiaux and the Wallace family from North Saanich.

Coen Wallace, now four-years-old, lives with his mother, Tanis, father, Chris and brother Layton.

He was born with diseased kidneys and spent the first two years of his life hooked up to a dialysis machine.

Fortunately for the family, in November 2012 after working with the Kidney Foun-dation, they found a donor match for Coen. He received a new kid-ney in February 2013 and is now happier and healthier than ever.

According to the Kid-ney Foundation, one out of every 10 British Columbians suffer from chronic kidney disease. In the past 10 years there is an inexplicable increase of 60 percent and with no cure, there is a pressing need to raise money for kidney disease research and patient care.
