Capital Regional District directors meet once again Wednesday to discuss salvag-ing the region’s $788-million secondary sewage treatment project, but the “forced hiatus” provides a window for new ideas, said Saanich Coun. Vic Derman.

Derman, who also sits as a director on the CRD’s core area liquid waste management com-mittee, intends to put forward a notice of motion next week to ask for an overview of the latest technology and the feasi-bility of a distributed treatment model.

“It might be appropriate to have an investigation led by a retired deputy minister or someone of similar status,” Derman said. The process wouldn’t need the time and expense of a full-scale Request for Proposals, but could still inform directors on “what’s out there,” Derman said.

“We’re not going anywhere right now, and that’s pretty obvious,” he said.

As Isaiah Brasset hoists himself into an arm stand, the teenaged diver blocks the bustle of Saanich Commonwealth Place.

Balancing upside-down on the nose of a 10-metre diving platform requires great focus.

The arm stand initiated-dive is one of many that Brasset, 15, will perform when he competes in all three individual disciplines, the one-metre springboard, three-metre spring and 10-metre platform, or tower, as Boardworks Diving Club hosts the 2014 Junior National Diving Championships (ages 14 to 18) at Commonwealth Place beginning today (Aug. 8) through Sunday.

Brasset is coming off a sweep of gold medals at the provincial summer diving championships hosted at Commonwealth pool in June. The soon-to-be Grade 10 student at Claremont secondary is in his second year of the 14-to-15 age group, and hopes to improve on his Top 12 placings from last year’s summer nationals.

“It’s great to have it in your own pool. It’s also pretty warm in (Commonwealth) and I’m used to that. Plus there’s the (familiarity of) spotting during the dives, which is a bonus,” Brasset said.

Spotting is the act of recognizing one’s whereabouts during the spinning portion of the dive and Brasset has his spots keyed up in Commonwealth. He’s run into obstacles at other meets, such as an entire wall painted blue, offering little detail for a quick glance on the way to the water.

“It’s important to see where you are and not to rely on the feel so you know when to kick out,” he said.

Not only can spotting be the toughest thing to learn in diving, once learned, it can be lost. At just 16, Emily Schmidt has regained her love of diving after a tough year in which she struggled with spotting.

A well-rounded diver on all three boards, the issues led to frustration and stress following the 2013 summer nationals. Especially after Schmidt had qualified for the junior worlds in 2012.

“It took a while to work through it but now I’m enjoying diving again,” Schmidt said.

“I worked on my visualization with a coach from Chicago, we did it on Skype. I was having problems

with the way I was talking to myself too, so I changed it to be much more positive.”

Boardworks will be represented

by four divers in total with 16-year-olds Ryan Grover and Aidan Famonoff joining Schmidt as first years in the 16-to-18 age group.

Grover came here from Toronto last year and is a podium hopeful for the one- and three-metre springboards, while Famonoff is at home on the tower and has enjoyed national success from there.

This weekend’s events begin each day at 9 a.m. with group finals beginning 2:30 p.m. on Friday and Sunday, and 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Qualifiers will represent Canada at the 2014 Fina World Junior Championships in Penza, Russia in September.

Earlier this summer, Boardworks divers attended the Junior Development nationals in Montreal, where Bryden Hattie won a silver and two bronze in the 12-to-13 age group and Ben Smyth did the same in the 11-and-under category.

Sand castle a first for annual fest

Yes, it’s a construction site, and yes, Sunday’s Cadboro Bay Festival is still happening.

And it promises to be a good one.Don’t mind the giant excavator, as the unfin-

ished upgrades and repairs to the Gyro Beach park and play area will be fenced in.

Among the festival’s many favourites is the return of local sand sculptor Fred Dobbs and his merry band of artists.

When he’s not working full-time at the South Island Bronze Works, Dobbs is heavy into sand sculpting and is a regular at the Parksville compe-tition each year.

The seven sculptors at Cadboro Bay Festival will be split into groups, with Dobbs and a few others taking on the iconic theme of a castle, this year’s central piece.

“It is ironic because we’ve been doing this for a long time and we’ve never made a castle here,” Dobbs said. “People are always misusing the term, calling sand sculptures castles when the feature has nothing to do with castles.”

Pepper’s Foods is paying for the delivery of 30-plus tonnes of angular sculpting sand, and requested the castle theme this year.

It’s given Dobbs an excuse to bring out a 23-year-old book, The Art of Sandcastling, by sculptor Ted Siebart of Chicago.

“(Siebart) is a guy I’ve known for a long time. We’ll see what ideas we can borrow from this old book.”

Sand sculptures at the park are usually built a little closer to the ocean, but the sand will be dumped on the field side of the playground this year. Other sand sculpting sponsors include the Cadboro Bay Business Association, whose team is planning a First Nations theme to represent the people who once lived near the beach. An Abstract Developments’ feature will incorporate earth, wind, fire and water, while B.C. Hydro and Telus have partnered for a fourth sculpture that connects with the environment.

The festival takes place along Sinclair Road. Music starts at 11 a.m. and kids’ activities include pirate school and a pirate treasure hunt.

And despite octopus and other favourites being off limits, the trusty Cadborosaurus is accessible, giving parents a chance to spin its mythical tales to the next generation.

“We just have to put up with the construction this year, but you can see the new play area is going to be a lot of fun, and we’ll be back next year,” Dobbs said.

Cadboro Bay Festival takes place Aug. 10 at Cad-boro Bay-Gyro Park.

Only two smaller projects, the Craigflower pump station and a $760,000 design of an attenuation tank at Arbutus Road, are continu-ing as planned while the Seaterra

program awaits direction on a way forward from CRD directors.

During that wait, Derman said directors need a “sounding” of avail-able sewage treatment technology to ensure they’re building the best plants for the right price.

“We need an independent exami-nation of the technology out there, the potential for architecture, what are examples elsewhere, and get enough information to figure out

whether a distributed model is worth pursuing further or whether we stick with the direction we went, but without McLoughlin Point.,” he said.

Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins is already involved in that process. Staff from West Shore communities, Esquimalt and the City of Victoria are currently working on terms of reference to move ahead on a dis-tributed model study under the umbrella of the CRD, she said. The team had hoped to present those terms at Wednesday’s meeting, but more work needs to be done.

“Our technical staff believe we may be able to provide sewage treat-ment that not only meets regulatory standards and guidelines, but beats them by standard and by cost,” Des-jardins said.

The CRD is required by federal legislation to treat its sewage to a secondary or greater level by 2020, and the province has set a wastewa-ter treatment deadline of 2018.

An extension to that provincial deadline will likely be necessary if the CRD can come up with a viable alternative to the current plan. Even with the current project, an exten-sion will likely be needed to find an alternative site to McLoughlin Point.

“We have five of seven affected municipalities working on a new way forward,” Desjardins said. “We need Saanich and Oak Bay to come on-side, because we don’t want them to get left behind.”

Regardless of the outcome, the Seaterra program that included McLoughlin Point as a wastewater site is now effectively dead, she said.

“The sooner everyone under-stands that, the better off we’ll be coming up with solutions,” Desjar-dins said.

When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced.

“The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.”

Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheel-in shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.”

Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home.

The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

The Blessing of the Animals has become an annual ritual at more than one church in Saa-nich. But it’s new to Reverend Rob Szo, who moved here with his wife and two kids from Toronto in 2012.

He’ll be doing his second blessing of the ani-mals on the grounds of St. Stephen’s Church, beginning at 2 p.m. on Aug. 10.

“I’d heard of it before but was never part of it until last year,” Szo said.

There’s more to the event than its ritual’s quirky moments, when vicars use careful tact to bless llamas, chicks, dogs and cats. But snakes tend to steal the show, Szo said. Donations sup-port the Pacific Animal Therapy Society, whose volunteers bring the pets for visits to hospitals, retirement facilities, group homes, schools, pre-schools and daycare groups.

“Pets can bring a lot of joy to people who are lonely,” Szo said.

As for the odd assortment of animals that are likely to come in for a blessing, Szo is ready for anything.

“I prefer to touch the animal if I can though ... I’m not so sure about (touching) a snake,” Szo said. “I’m just blessing what God has already blessed. God’s made these creative creatures, and it’s a neat part of my ministry.”

No one ever has the right to endanger the health of others by their habits.

Smokers must realize the secondhand smoke they emit causes others to have health problems. That can mean children, friends and anyone they defile the air around.

Smoking is the one vice that negatively affects everyone else so that smokers can get thier fix.

We have to control drinking and driving so that the impaired cannot kill anyone on the road. A smoker’s weapon may not be immediate, but those around him will suffer, and cannot breath clean air as long as they exhale.

Smoking in multi-family dwellings needs to be banned, as well, and also, smoking in a car with the windows down in rush hour traffic.

We eliminated asbestos and lead pipe, still legal for sale, but not for breathing by Canadian citizens. Just because something is legal does not mean it is harmless.

The statistics clearly show that careless smoking causes house and apartment fires, forest fires, and is dangerous to the public, not to mention loss of work time (smoke breaks), the litter, loss of

revenue from sale of property, and the burden on the health-care system.

Thank you, Capital Regional District, for working to help Victorians with their right to breathe clean air a major right of smokers and non-smokers alike.

Regional amalgamation: devil is in the details

Re: Residents favour amalgamation (News, Aug. 1).

I suspect the vision of amalgamation supported by residents consists of replacing (for example) 13 chiefs of police each paid roughly $200,000 per year with a single chief of police, paid the same $200,00 per year, yielding a 92 per cent cost savings.

In fact, amalgamation is more likely to mean that we’d end up with 13 assistant chiefs of police, still paid $200,000 per year, plus a new supreme chief of police, paid at least $300,000 per year, yielding a 12 per cent cost increase.

Amalgamation may enjoy widespread support but, as always, the devil is in the details.

Advice for government, teachers and parents

Here is some free advice to the B.C. government, teachers and parents.

B.C. government – You have the ability to end this debacle prior to September. Do it. Stop playing silly games and affect the lives of our children. Negotiate in good faith or legislate.

Teachers – Don’t flex your muscles by going on strike in September. That is what the government wants, so they can point to you as the “bad guys” while saving a pot of money. Go back to work, keep on negotiating and tell the public everyday what is happening during the negotiations.

Parents – Why have you not risen up in righteous indignation? Your children are being used as pawns in this dispute between the BCTF and the government. “Man the barricades” – picket MLA offices, government ministries, the premier’s office, the BCTF and write to the newspapers as some of you have done, showing your disgust.

This whole thing has to be settled before September. B.C. has become the laughing stock across Canada.

Smoke-free air is our right

Victoria MP Murray Rankin and his New Democrat colleagues are pressing for an unusual summer meeting of a parliamentary committee to clear the air over the auditing of charities for their political activities.

Rankin says there are too many allegations that the audits are being used to silence opponents of the Harper government.

Since the spring of 2012, the Canada Revenue Agency has launched 52 audits of charities for their

political activities, after the government ordered the special probe and eventually provided some $13.4 million for the initiative.

The first wave of audits in 2012-2013 targeted environmental groups who have opposed the government’s energy and pipeline policies, but the initiative has since expanded to cover other groups who fight poverty, provide international aid and promote human rights.

Many of the groups say the audits have caused an “advocacy chill,” preventing them from speaking out for fear of aggravating the auditors and potentially losing their coveted charitable status.

Canada’s charities are permitted to devote up to 10 per cent of their resources to political activities

The Canada Revenue Agency refuses to provide the names of the groups being audited, citing confidentiality provisions of the Income Tax Act.

Of course, Rankin could very well be chasing this issue as part of the NDP’s political agenda.

But there is a bigger question here on government transparency.

Government likes to talk about transparency and opening the books, but in reality it remains a closed shop.

Rankin is at least trying to bring us better government by attempting to get questions answered. It will be interesting to see if the Conservatives are ready to answer.

Many of the groups say the audits have caused an “advocacy chill.”

With a hammer in one hand and a metal dust pan in the other, Lynne Thompson chases a six-point buck out of her drive-way. The impressive ungulate saunters further up Connorton Lane, in the hills of Saanich’s Maplewood area.

Thompson bangs the make-shift noisemakers together to stop “Buck” from doing what he always doing: eating her flowers. Only this time, Buck was after a rare prize.

He was dining on the coloured fibres of sisal and moss on Thompson’s black and white chess board, a feature of land art she made for the upcoming Arts and Music in the Garden festival at the Horticultural Centre of the Pacific, Aug. 9 and 10.

“Buck lives in the area, I can’t stop him. He’s not so bad except he isn’t just eating the same flow-ers anymore, now he’s trying out a lot more,” Thompson says.

Buck clearly knows a good thing, as Thompson is a member of the Victoria Flower Arrangers’ Guild. Her yard boasts dozens of plants, a smorgasbord for the big beast.

He’ll be back, she says, but by that time the land art will be safely tucked in the garage.

Thompson has been build-ing land art features for over 10 years, usually for the Arts and Music in the Garden.

She’s also built a life-size buck, ironically, for the B.C. Blooms showcase at the Government House in 2012.

And she’s made an octopus using monkey tree limbs for an event at the Coast Collective at Esquimalt Lagoon.

About 24 members of the Guild have formed various part-nerships to build 17 features for this year’s land art exhibition at Arts and Music in the Park.

“It’s great fun to get together and work in small teams,” Thompson says.

“The challenge is getting the

flowers to survive during the shows,” says fellow Guild mem-ber Ann Gargett.

“I love creating land art because it’s all outside.”

This year, Gargett, who also feeds Buck with her Maplewood plants, has happily used strands of surplus honeysuckle vine from her place on Saltspring Island to create Hanging Around.

The woody vines will be dec-orated with brightly coloured blooms.

A map of all the land art will direct garden goers around HCP on Saturday and Sunday, where there will be 60 artists, a classic car show, music, food and other entertainment.

Arts and Music in the Garden runs 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

The magical light of sunset only adds to the magical world of Shakespeare, says actor Adrienne Smook.

Smook, who shares her knowledge with students at the Canadian College of the Performing Arts in Oak Bay, is among those performing during the 24th Greater Victoria Shakespeare Festival that features Henry V and The Taming of the Shrew until Aug. 16 on the grounds of Camosun College’s Lansdowne Campus.

“It’s a beautiful venue,” she says. “When you’re out there with the elements, it makes it all the more real and exciting. There’s something about the little bit of breeze in your hair or little bit of rain.”

Smook portrays Kate in Taming of the Shrew and Fluellen in Henry V and works alongside two of her CCPA voice students, Alexa MacDougall and Ursina (Sina) Luther.

“It’s exciting to watch them use the skills they’ve been developing at the school,” Smook said of the students entering third year. “It’s a new level of appreciation for what training does for performers. To have known these students in class and then seeing them in the context of rehearsal … it’s very rewarding and inspiring.”

Henry V is about a new king

determined to prove his right to rule a kingdom torn apart by strife. Insults from France lead Henry to make a rash decision to go to war. But his moving speeches, bravery and leadership lead his army to victory over the French, ending in his marriage to the Dauphine of France.

The Taming of the Shrew is about a merchant with two daughters, one who is sweet and mild-mannered, the other who is bad-tempered and cantankerous. Their suitors try everything to win their hearts, leading to false identities, secret weddings and hilarious fiascoes. The festival’s acting company performs both plays led by classically trained professional mentor actors – Smook and Julian Cervello.

“We work with the director and artistic director to provide mentorship, education and professional formation for the rest of the cast, which includes acting students, community actors and two junior company members. The GVSF is a professional festival with an educational commitment to its grassroots in Victoria’s budding talent,” said Smook, who trained at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama in London. Both festival plays are directed by long-time society associate and festival founder, Clayton Jevne. “As an instructor I work primarily with students.

In this context we’re all together as student, as professionals, (and) all exploring this work and then taking that work directly onto stage and into rehearsal performance,” Smook added.

Saanich businesseshit by thieves

Saanich Police officers are on the lookout for a thief or thieves responsible for five break-and-enters over the past week in the district.

The first break-in occurred July 30 in the 100-block of Burnside Rd. W., but luckily a security system sent the sus-pect on the run without any stolen goods.

On July 31 around 8:15 p.m., an intrusion alarm was tripped at a business in the 500-block of Dupplin Rd. A laptop, cell-phone and video camera were stolen in that case.

On Aug. 1, a business was broken into in the 3200-block of Quadra St., but nothing was stolen. Two nights later on Aug. 3, several TVs were stolen after a smash and grab operation in the 800-block of Tolmie Ave.

The most recent break and enter occurred Tuesday around 3:45 a.m. at a business in the Royal Oak Plaza. The thief in that case escaped with cash.

“There is a strong likelihood that several of these cases are related, given the mode of entry to the businesses,” said Saanich police Sgt. Steve Eas-sie. “We would ask anyone who is out in the late evening and early morning hours to

be on the lookout for people or vehicles loitering near busi-nesses that appear to be out of place.”

Fire sends twoto hospital

A house fire in the 700-block of Snowdrop Ave. sent two Saanich residents to hospital Monday afternoon.

The fire broke out around 4 p.m. and required 18 firefight-ers to extinguish the blaze.

Two residents, including an elderly woman, were sent to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

Damage to the home is esti-mated at $300,000, while the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Gordon Head teacherwins more accolades

Gordon Head middle school’s Andrea Blair is gaining more recognition for her work helping dyslexic students deci-pher sheet music.

Blair is one of three winners of the annual Canadian Fam-ily Teacher Awards and will

receive $2,500 for school pro-gramming and supplies.

Now in its eighth year, the Canadian Family Teacher Awards recognize outstand-ing elementary and secondary school educators from across Canada. Earlier this year, a panel of education experts shortlisted 12 semi-finalists from a pool of nominated teachers and an online vote determined the three winners.

“The program’s three win-ning teachers have demon-strated exceptional influence on their students’ lives that continues to positively impact entire communities,” said Angie McKaig, Digital Director of Canadianfamily.ca.

Blair’s fellow winners are Rachel Bemrose, a Grade 7/8 teacher in Peterborough, Ont., and Jordan Smith, a Grade 6 teacher in Sherwood Park, Alta.

Blair is the music direc-tor at Gordon Head; she also teaches strings programs at Torquay Elementary.

She was praised for her exceptional achievements, which include running six dif-ferent musical ensembles and a three-year project spent designing an entirely new sheet music system for a dyslexic student.

As one Torontonian put it, “that’s about the fanciest place in town.” It certainly draws an upscale crowd of rich people, or posers, looking the part. With a steady lineup of Ferrari, McLaren and other exotics parked outside, Cadillac was front and centre showing off its new full-size luxury SUV to a young, well-healed crowd of Toronto socialites and business people.

LooksGetting a full-size truck into a boutique hotel is like trying to park in one of those parking spots labelled “small car”. To get around this, the party part of the launch was held on a garage rooftop, transformed into a nightclub, complete with gourmet finger food, fancy

cocktails and live performers, including the requisite fire-twirling entertainers. There was even an Escalade-inspired golf cart to shuttle guests to the roof. The star of the show was the all-new 2015 Escalade, a vehicle Cadillac hopes will make up about 20 per cent of its overall sales. With a $6,000 price drop and very competitive packages, they hope even wealthy shoppers will stop to see the value in this SUV. It sure got attention, thanks to the fabulous LED projector headlamps and taillights. The angular shape is very contemporary and the sleeker sheet metal looks up to date.InsideThe Escalade has always made an impact when it arrives at any destination; the sheer size and attitude it projects says a lot about the person driving it. It is inside that needed to be refreshed the most, and the attention to detail Cadillac infused in its new truck should pay dividends. Any luxury buyer expects leather, wood, and smart infotainment and Cadillac delivers on all of these. The dash and doors are cov-ered with hand cut leather. The open-grain wood and contrasting interior materials like faux suede all make it look as rich as the buyer expects. Front and centre is Cadillac’s CUE entertainment system that I find easy to operate and interact with. The buttons below it are touch sensitive, there are no knobs or switches. The front passengers just swipe over the surface to change the volume and heat controls. DriveOne reason to buy a big truck-based SUV is to move people in numbers or tow a trailer to a cabin or cottage. That latter experience came with the drive portion of the Escalade launch, driving north of Toron-to to The Briars, a 100-hectare resort on the edge of Lake Simcoe. This family run complex includes a huge stretch of lake frontage, golf course, pools, tennis and activities for all ages and the Escalade fits right in. For moving a large family around in comfort, the

Escalade is wonderful as there is plenty of room to stretch out when the long wheelbase (ESV) model is chosen. Granted about 70 per cent of all buyers choose the shorter wheelbase as it looks less imposing and some might not need the interior vastness. Under the hood is GM’s premium 6.2L V8 with a whopping 420hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. This might seem like overkill but this larger engine can switch off to just four cylinders under light load, more often impacting fuel economy. The power goes to just the rear wheels, all four wheels or automatically controlled, all by a switch on the dash. My experi-ence driving for the day returned about

12L/100km in mostly highway driving. Not bad for a big truck.

VerdictThe new Escalade adds about $10,000 worth of new equipment like standard magnetic ride control for a more nimble ride. The cabin is much quieter, for doing big business deals on the phone, and the ride overall is much more refined than before. Starting at $79,900 the Escalade is for the well healed, but Cadillac representatives told me that most buyers shoot for the moon and buy the top Premium model for $90,500. The new Cadillac is fresh and much more refined, with features like never before. Do young wealthy buyers like the Cadillac brand and where it is going? The short answer is yes. GM claims this is the fastest growing luxury brand in Canada and B.C. is a hot spot for the Escalade. It has been seven years since we’ve had an all-new Escalade… the wait was worth it.

Forest fire conditions in this province are at an all-time high and the wood is very dry. The men and women that fight these fires every year rely on vehicles to take them to the battlefield. Remote back roads and sometimes the forest floor are the roads on which they must travel. There is a variety of vehicles in the firefighter fleet but lately they have been using the Ford Super-Duty as the prime support vehicle. The new 2015 version is powerful enough to haul heavy trailers and large enough to double as a mobile office. The 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V8, with higher power ratings for 2015, coupled with a 6R140 heavy duty Torqshift six-speed automatic transmission delivers improved torque, horsepower and fuel economy. The engine pumps out a whopping 860 ft-lb of torque at 1,600 rpm and 440 hp at 2,800 rpm. It has lots of get up and go. Ease your way into the throttle and before you know it, you are at highway speeds. Power and acceleration are smooth and effortless. When properly equipped the Super Duty has a maxi-mum tow rating of 14,152 kg (31,200 lbs) and a total payload of up to 3,293 kg (7,260 lbs)The interior is very functional. The available LCD productivity screen keeps you up to date with vital in-

formation, for example fuel economy numbers, towing, off-road information and voice command navigation. A rapid heat supplemental cab heater is available for those cold days that you need interior heat quickly. When you leave your mobile office, it is nice to know you have options with storing your valuables. Under-seat locking storage compartments be-neath the first and second row seats provide space for laptops and other important things. I really liked the layout of the gauges and controls in this vehicle; all are easily read and accessible. There are 12-volt outlets everywhere, two in the dash, one in the centre console, one in the back of that console, right beside the newly added 110V/150W power inverter and there’s a supply located in the rear under seat storage bin on the driver’s side.

The front seats I found very comfort-able and perfect for a long day at work. The rear seating positions were also very comfortable with lots of legroom.Noise levels in the cab, or lack thereof was amazing. This is must be the quietest diesel on the planet. It runs as quietly as a gasoline vehicle. You can easily hold conversations in the cab at any speed with no interference from outside sources. It was also a treat to be able to order from a drive thru window without having to shut the truck off! Remember, when travelling the back-roads this summer, pay attention to the fire danger rating, follow any fire bans, and report fires to 1-800-663-5555 or #5555. Help the firefighters keep their trucks clean and shiny for longer.

Car gathering raises cash for local causesBlack Press is working with the Salmon Farmers Asso-ciation of B.C. and Truffles Catering to put on a salmon barbecue to raise funds for a pair of worthy causes during the Vancouver Island Motor Gathering. The German Auto Import Network hosts the 2014 Vancouver Island Motor Gathering on Aug. 17 with funds raised supporting the Children’s Hospital Foun-dation of Vancouver Island and the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation.For many years, under many different names, this car show was held on the grounds of the Queen Alexandra Centre for Chil-dren’s Health. This year, the show has moved to a new

location with its new hosts, the German Auto Import Network. The event promises a day of family fun and an exciting lineup of cars and motorcycles. There will be a great selection of food court favourites, entertain-ment, pedal cars, remote controlled cars, a bouncy castle and more.The Vancouver Island Motor Gathering is Aug. 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Viscount Aero Centre, 9800 McDonald Park Rd. in Sidney. The Victoria Nikkei Society is spending its 20th anniversary with one foot in the past, as it honours the pioneers of the city’s Japanese-Canadian com-munity.

The Nikkei Society, in partner-ship with the Japanese Friend-ship Society and Old Cemetery Society will be celebrating its annual Obon Festival on Aug. 10.

Obon is a traditional Japa-nese ceremony in which par-ticipants wash the graves of their relatives – though the cer-emony is celebrated a little dif-ferently in the Capital Region.

After being forcefully relo-cated from B.C. during the Sec-ond World War, the families who originally established Greater Victoria’s Japanese community did not return.

Many of the original settlers who lived and died in the city still remain in Ross Bay Cem-etery, and play a unique role in today’s community.

Despite not sharing blood ties, Nikkei Society co-founder Tsugio Kurushima considers these pioneers ancestors of the entire community.

They are honoured as such during Obon, he said.

The Nikkei Society faces chal-lenges today in encouraging younger Japanese-Canadians to

become more involved in their heritage, he added.

Yet despite such a deep involvement in the community now, he admits that he once felt the same way as his juniors.

“Growing up in Winnipeg, I

wasn’t very involved in Japa-nese culture, I just wanted to be like every other white kid on my block,” Kurushima said. “It wasn’t until I grew older that I wanted to learn more about my heritage.”

Kurushima hopes that the Nikkei Soci-ety’s events, including the New Year’s celebra-tions, cherry blossom festival and upcom-ing Obon Festival can spark that interest for young Japanese- and non-Japanese Canadi-ans.

The fourth annual Obon Festival takes place at Ross Bay Cem-etery and Ross Bay Villa on Sunday, Aug. 10 beginning at 12:30 p.m. with gravestone wash-ing.

An Obon Buddhist Service takes place at 2:30 p.m., while Obon Matsuri begins at 3:30 p.m. at Ross Bay Villa. All events are free of charge.

Unless serious progress is made on the B.C. teachers’ dispute with the province, and soon, students’ summer holidays may be extended a lot further than expected.

“Lots of people I’ve talked to have already said they’re anticipating the teachers won’t be back until October,” said Lucy-Ann Smith, owner and operator of Happy Camp-ers Childcare.

Happy Campers has 12 centres all through Greater Victoria and takes care of 450 to 500 children each day.

Most out-of-school care centres will con-tinue with what they call “strike camps,” said Smith, something they started in June when the teachers’ strike first took effect. Strike camps offer full-day care for parents who have to work and although the govern-ment has promised to subsidize parents with $40 per day for each child under-13 to help cover the extra costs, the allowance isn’t going to fix all the headaches parents have been dealing with.

A lot of care centres hire university students for the summer’s influx of kids, said Smith, and come September, they all go back to school. Centres could be left

short-staffed and ill-equipped to handle the higher demands for care.

That’s the case with the View Royal Out of School Care Society, said operations man-ager Leeann Lindberg.

“Most of our staff are university stu-dents,” she said. “It’s a matter of seeing if we have enough staff.”

Lindberg said they’re in a particularly sticky situation, because even though they’re not attached to View Royal elemen-tary, the care centre and pre-school is still on the school grounds.

“If the union doesn’t picket the parking lot, then we’re able to stay open,” said Lind-

berg. But even though the union has been “really good” about letting the centre stay open, the centre still rents a classroom from the school that would be off-limits should the strike continue.

“It’s going to limit the number of children that can attend with us,” Lindberg said.

From staffing challenges and extra costs to scheduling full-day care, to the potential for lost income and the disruption to stu-dents, parents and care centres have been hit hard by the teachers’ strike.

And if the rumour mill is true, come Sep-tember, there may still be a ways to go.

Q How do you find time for “you” outside of being a “mom”?

A It’s definitely challenging, espe-cially since I’ve gone back to work full-time. I have a supportive husband who is a very hands-on dad and we are lucky to be surrounded by family who love to spend time with our girls, which gives us a break.

Q What are you reading right now? What kinds of books do you like to read with your children?

A I wish I had more time to read, but it takes me awhile to get through a book these days. I just finished Water for Elephants and am looking forward to reading the final book in Ken Follett’s Trilogy Series, Edge of Eternity.

My youngest daughter won’t sit still for a whole book yet, but my oldest loves Dr. Seuss and Robert Munsch. We also make the library a part of our regular routine, which means we always have new books to read. Current favou-rites are Owl Babies and The Deep Deep Puddle.

Q What is your favourite family activity to share together?

A We love being active as a family, doing

things like swimming and skating and we really enjoy being outdoors - hiking, playing at the park or going to the beach. I would have to say our favourite activity is walks around our neighbourhood. It’s truly amazing how children can turn the most ordinary places into a grand adventure.

Q The part of your day you look forward to the most?

A I love watching my kids play at daycare at the end of the day before they realize I’m there, and then of course their reactions when they do see me are amazing and can melt away even the worst day at the office.

For most of the “little” years, my girls and I spent summers on the swim meet circuit, chugging up and down Vancouver Island and on the Lower Mainland in our bright orange ’78 Volkswagen.

Since Dad worked weekends, it fell to me to load up the VW and navigate our way through cities and towns and back roads, take shortcuts and not-so-short-cuts, dodge traffic jams, find campsites and swimming pools. I became capable. But it all fell apart the day we left our home on Salt Spring Island to cover a protest at the legislature for the local newspaper. Usually, our travels included just us females. But this time Dad joined us, apparently throwing a wrench into my capability.

The day started with a lift in his eyebrows as I hopped into the driver’s seat. He mumbled something about my driving making him sick, but I waved him off, breezily indicating that of course I’d drive. Things were going well, despite being one of the last cars to disembark from the ferry. We were zooming down the highway, the girls and I chattering away, when, to my right, Dad grunted and tried to interrupt.

“Photo radar,” he snapped when

he could get a word in. Naturally, he assumed I was speeding.

“No problem,” I said, shrugging nonchalantly. But I sneaked a look at the speedometer and wondered how I could deter him from collecting the mail for the next six weeks.

“Now that is a real car,” I announced a few minutes later as we arrived at a red light next to a Porsche. “But,” I said, thinking out loud, “I bet I can beat him up the hill.”

I balanced my feet on the clutch and gas, looking between the Porsche and the light. Then – blast off. I whizzed through the gear changes as the Porsche meandered behind us. Then the driver realized what I was doing, gave a little grin and lurched forward, disappearing into the horizon. The backseat cheering stopped.

“Does she do this all the time?” Dad complained.

Our first stop was a mall (Dad had purchases to make). As we got out of the car, I reached for my purse … which wasn’t there. Okay, so I left it on the ferry.

“No problem,” I said, countering his withering look with an expression that said: “This sort of thing happens all the time and I’m perfectly capable of handling it.”

I picked up his cell phone (the days before we each had a phone) and after some difficulty, I managed to connect with a person at B.C. Ferries, discovering, yes, my purse had been found. (I told you so.)

Shopping for “him” now on hold for lack of credit card, we loaded back into the car. I threw the cell phone onto the dash, rolled down all the windows and roared off toward the legislature. Then came a sharp, right-hand turn onto Blanshard just as the light changed and a city-block-full of cars came at us. Horrified, I watched the cell phone slide across the dash and fly into the path of oncoming steel and rubber. Dad leapt like Superman from the car and managed to guide traffic around the phone, until the very last truck rolled by and crushed it like a bug into the asphalt.

“It’s not mom’s fault!” chimed my cheering section from the back seat.

“It was that damn truck,” I agreed meekly.

The rest of the trip occurred without too much incident, although I mistakenly thought I’d locked the keys in the car. (I didn’t mention this to anyone; at that point I would have broken a window and feigned a robbery to get at those keys.) The next weekend, the girls and I were back in the van, puttering off to a swim meet, with – I swear – my capability fully restored.

Matthew Atkinson is a very active soon-to-be 12 year old who is looking forward to entering Grade 7 this fall at Dunsmuir middle school in Colwood. He loves playing all sports, including football, hockey, basketball and lacrosse with his friends.

In school, Matthew’s favourite subject is physical education. He also helped younger students at his school by being a Big Buddy.

He played football with the Westshore War-riors for a few seasons, winning the Gold Cup in 2010. He has recently taken up both box and field lacrosse. This past box lacrosse season, he played for the Juan de Fuca Whalers pee wee ‘A’ team. They had an incredibly successful season and capped it by winning the gold medal at the 2014 Provincial Championships in Richmond in July.

Moving is a stressful experience at the best of times, and downsizing after living in the same house for decades can seem like an insurmountable task. But with a few phone calls and a bit of effort, the process can be relatively pain-free.

“The first call should be to a realtor who specializes in (the neighbourhood) and specializes in downsizing,” says Cassie Kangas, an agent with DFH Real Estate.

Kangas has been selling homes in the Capital Region for eight years, and says the general rule of moving every seven years doesn’t apply here.

A lot of people live in their homes for decades in retirement-rich Saanich, which can lead to a build-up of a lot of clutter when it comes time to make a move.

It’s important that no surprises crop up when the house goes on the market, Kangas says.

“I definitely recommend doing a pre-inspection,” she

says. Dealing with old oil tanks in the yard is always a worry, and anything that would make the house unliveable – like a roof in need of replacement – can be identified this way, but renovations aren’t always necessary.

“It’s usually not worth putting any money into the house, unless it’s something that needs to be done that would impede the sale of

the home,” she says. “It’s more realistic to just price the home where it needs to be, reflecting any work it might need.”

Tearing out walls or replacing the kitchen might be a bit much, but a coat of paint and a professional’s eye can do wonders to interested buyers, says Brenda Russell, realtor with Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty. Russell has been

licensed for 24 years, and has seen what a little bit of staging can do.

“Doing a colour consultation or even just changing a few pieces of furniture around…I always encourage even an hour’s consultation,” she says. “It doesn’t cost very much, and then you’ve got a ‘wow’ experience.”

Russell says that while professional help can be

invaluable, every house is unique and no house is going to be perfect.

Both Kangas and Russell agree that the important thing is to take the process one step at a time, and not be afraid to call if help is needed.
