An Epistle from Paul: Pride Goes Before Destruction! – T.J. Mosley had a delightful article written about him in The Hudspeth Herald. T.J. played catcher for the Port Arthur, Texas baseball team, but T.J. was nothing but a showoff. Behind shin guards, chest protector and a catcher’s mask, there was little left to showoff; so, he pled with the manager for a chance to play third base. Why third base? Because third base was closest to the grandstands. This is where all the pretty girls would sit during the home games. Well, the Jumbos were to play Magnolia, Texas. The manager told T.J. he could play third just this once. All this time he had secretly plotted a scheme he was sure would impress the spectators; especially all those pretty girls in the grandstands. He was going to wait for a pop-fly down the third base. He would position himself so he could remove his hat, bow low to the grandstands and while holding his hat behind him he would then catch the ball and surely receive a hero’s applause. Well, needless to say things didn’t happen exactly as T.J. had planned. A Magnolia’s player popped up a ball. And T.J. positioned himself right under it. He removed his hat and held it behind his back. He then bowed to the grandstands. The ball, however, hit him squarely on the head and left him unconscious for two innings. The Port Arthur manager says he had two regrets: 1) he regrets letting T.J. play third base; 2) he regrets T.J. tried his stunt with the bases loaded. What a perfect illustration of an often neglected Biblical principle. Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before stumbling.” 1 Corinthians 10:12 says, “Therefore, let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.” The point is clear; there is NO room in the Christian life for showing off.
