Andy Irvine & Dónal Lunny’s Mozaik plus supportIn association with Saltairelive.............................................Mozaik are a dream combination, and another act for which we’ve had a long wait — only touring occasionally, they haven’t been seen in England since 2009. This is the ultimate global string- band — Andy and Dónal from Ireland, old-time US music-man Bruce Molsky, Nikola Parov from Hungary and Dutchman Rens van der Zalm. Together, encompassing a range of styles across their repertoire, rather than taking the fusion route of mixing them all up at the same time — Mozaik move effortlessly from Celtic to old-time to Eastern European music and rhythms, with intricate string arrangements complementing Bruce and Andy’s vocals. Mozaik did not come together at random, but via a genuine appreciation of each other’s music. This is a very special band — four outstanding musicians creating a sound full of variety, subtlety and surprise.www.andyirvine.com/mozaikTICKETS: £15.00 www.saltairelive.co.ukVICTORIA HALL, Victoria RdSaltaire BD18 3JS

Screen Seven Film PhilomenaDirected By: Stephen Frears PG–13 | 1 hour 38 minutes.............................................Based on a powerful true story and led by note-perfect perfor-mances from Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, Philomena offers a profoundly affecting drama for adult filmgoers of all ages. Adapted from the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, ‘The Lost Child of Philomena Lee’, the film focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee (Dench), mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock — something her Irish-Catholic community didn’t have the highest opinion of — and given away for adoption in the United States. In following church doctrine, she was forced to sign a contract that wouldn’t allow for any sort of inquiry into the son’s whereabouts.

After starting a family years later in England and, for the most part, moving on with her life, Lee meets Sixsmith (Coogan), a BBC reporter with whom she decides to discover her long-lost son.TICKETS: £6.00/£4.50 on the door at Seven Artswww.sevenleeds.co.ukSEVEN ARTS, Harrogate RdLeeds LS7 3PD

The Leeds Gathering Film EventBelfast to Belgravia: Brian Desmond Hurst’s Life in Cinema....................................................................Brian Desmond Hurst (1895–1986), the Belfast-born filmmaker, made more than thirty films over four decades across three continents. He worked with Ford in Hollywood in the 1920s and wrote the screen-play for the original Lawrence of Arabia film in 1938. Now recognised as Northern Ireland’s most prolific film director, he is best remembered for the war-time romance Dangerous Moonlight (1941), the dramatic reconstruction of the Battle of Arnhem, Theirs is the Glory (1946) and the ever-popular Dickens adaptation, Scrooge (1951). He made the first screen adaptation of JM Synge’s work in 1935, Riders to the Sea and The Playboy 1962 was his last film: Irishness is threaded through his films. Son of a shipyard blacksmith, he ended his days living in London’s Belgravia in comfort but relative Irish émigré anonymity. This evening’s talk, illustrated with video clips from his key films, argues why Hurst deserves to be better celebrated as a cinematic bridge between the silent era of Rex Ingram and John Ford, and the Irish new wave that began in the 1980s. ....................................................................Tonight’s talk is given by Prof. Lance Pettitt, St Mary’s University, London, a specialist on Irish cinema and co-editor of Hurst’s memoir Travelling the Road (written originally in 1976) published recently by Lagan Press, Belfast.FREE EVENTwww.heartcentre.org.ukHEADINGLEY ENTERPRISE & ARTS CENTREBennett Road, Leeds LS6 3HN
