DEVELOPMENT OF SPORTS FACILITIES ADJACENT TO SALTFORD HALL
Attention of all Community Association Members and Users of Salt ford Hall is drawn to the Planning Application that has been submitted to B&NES Council to build a large All Weathers Playing Surface (35 metres by 32 metresl immediately at the rear of Saltford Hall in place of the present Sports Club. The plans abo include a new pavilion and club, built on the present car park and provision of a new car park much further away from the Hall behind the garages in Wedmore Road.
This plan is causing considerable concern to the Association because of the potential noise that will emanate from the use of the All weather Playing Surface so close to the Main Hall and Wansdyke Room. With the exception of these two points however, the Association supports the main aims of the plans which will greatly improve the sports facilities at the site.
At the moment, the B&NES Council decision has been put on hold whilst consultations take place between the representatives of the Sports Club and the SCA. Plans of the scheme are being displayed in the Foyer of Saltford Hall but if anyone would like further information please call our Chairman John Scott on 01225 873317 or ViceChairman John Thomas on 0117 986 3869.

Percy Broughton
Percy Broughton was Secretary of this Association in the 1950s and up to the late '60s and retired to Cornwall many years ago. We are saddened to report that he died at the age of 94 last Christmas Eve. His daughter wrote in a letter: " We hope that his strength of character, kindness and love are passed on to his grandchildren" Those words express the way in which he is remembered as a person, by those who knew him when he lived in Saltford.
SALTFORD HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
It is with much regret that the Committee responsible for the above have reluctantly agreed that there will be no Flower Show this year. The numbers of entries have, generally, been declining over the years and the numbers of people attending during the afternoon have been falling. Despite our efforts to generate new interest in the Show and despite a brief upturn in both entries and attendances, it is feIt that last year's show, the 47th must be the last. We recognise that when the Show was first launched, it was the focal point of village life and was the highlight of the year. Nowadays there is so much more vying for our time and energies and it seems that gardening has felt the wind of

change. Coupled with the above is the fact that the "Committee" had been reduced to 3 members. We were quite prepared to continue running the show if we feIt that there was sufficient interest in both the exhibitors and the general public. We reluctantly came to the conclusion, after perusing our records, that this was not so. May we take this opportunity of thanking everyone who helped us over the years, particularly during the "glory days" of the Flower Show, when it attracted some 1000 entries and was housed in the Hall and a huge marquee on the sports field. We like to think that we and are predecessors gave an enormous amount of pleasure both to the exhibitor and to the visitor. I cannot end this report without paying a public tribute to Brian Coombes who has been Show Secretary for the last 37 years. Without Brians dedication to the show we should not have reached the 47th. His hard work and enthusiasm were unparalleled and were instrumental in bringing this highly thought of show to Saltford each year. Brian also exhibited to a very high standard and had many cups to prove it! Flower Show enthusiasts, not only from Saltford but further afield, owe Brian a great debt of gratitude - thank you Brian.

LIVING HERE!
Do you ever long for Peace and Quiet As you go through a normal day? Well, if you live here much depends, How near the A4 that you stay
Yes, the Main Road carries on it In daylight hours on each weekday Many thousands of vehicles And yes, their speed does cause dismay.
They bring noise, and much Pollution, You probably wish they'd go on strike. Whilst, we folk who use the Foot paths Must NOW be wary of the BIKE!
Yet my friend, if you reside here You know something has to give Just set the GOOD, against the BAD For it's a LOVELY place to live.
Sincerely, Roger Howells.

SALTFORD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
COUNCILLOR'S SURGERIES The Parish Council is elected to consider the views of all residents of Saltford. Any comments and suggestions made to the II Parish Councillors on local matters are considered by either the full Councilor one of its committees, or is referred to another organisation to deal with if this is more appropriate. Many queries can be answered directly by Parish Councillors or the Clerk if the matter has been raised before. Often a wide variety of matters which may seem relatively unimportant but could be irritating to several residents can be sorted out quickly and easily through the Parish Council's contacts. An example of this was to improve the spe.:d at which the pedestrian crossing lights change near the top of Norman Road - all this needed was a to note to those responsible for the main road for this to be corrected - many others can be dealt with just as easily by phone. Similarly, a suggestion to plant trees to provide some shade for children and their carers at the exposed Claverton Road Play Area is being followed up with B&NES Council, with a view to planting in the Autumn. In an effort to make it easier for you to contact your Parish Councillors on any SaItford matters, large or small, a councillor will be available from 1O.OOam to II.00am once a month on a Saturday morning in the Parish Council office (through Davies & Way estate agents) This will be held on a trial basis for the next three months, on Saturday 18th April, 16th May and 20th June. Instant answers may not always be available and orne mailers may be impossible to resolve, but any questions wil! be followed up a Don as possible. The Parish Counci llors are elected to b avaiJable for all Saltford resident - Ihey are Ii ted on the notice board outside Ihe Post Office - but plea e take this opportunity to directly discuss ways of improving the quality of life for Saltford residents.

SAL TFORD WOMENS' INSTITUTE The speaker at the February meeting was Mrs Bowring. Her talk was on "Secret Hiding Places". These were hidden small rooms in the houses of Catholic supporters in the 16th Century where Priests could hide when the houses were being searched for those Catholics. Mrs Bowring illustrated her talk with interesting slides. As well as monthly meetings with speakers, outings and social occasions, members are always willing to learn new skills. One such "Learning Day" took place in January when a dozen members gathered at the home of the Secretary to be introduced to the mysteries of Computers and the Internet. Two gentlemen from South Bristol Learning Network were there to explain and answer questions.. They extended an invitation to visit the workshop in Bristol - an invitation which was eagerly accepted. After a delicious lunch provided by their hosts the members talked about their introduction to modern technology. HINTON CLOSE DAY CENTRE What do we do now? Hinton Close Day Centre has been running successfully every Thursday for the past eight years thanks to the efforts of a group of Volunteer drivers, helpers and committee members. It offers companionship and social activities - and a cooked lunch! - to 16 less mobile and socially isolated elderly Saltford Residents and continues to be extremely popular and well supported. However, at the Annual General Meeting in May the co-ordinator Molly James is retiring and we urgently need someone to take on her responsibilities. Do you know of anybody who might be interested in taking up an extremely interesting, varied and rewarding voluntary
14
job - or perhaps two people who might like to share the responsibility together? It is vital that a replacement is found before May, it would be a tremendous loss to Saltford community in general and the elderly housebound and their carers in particular, if the Day Centre was forced to close. It has a team of 30 volunteers and over the years has given help and support to more than 50 Saltford residents. We can't let all that effort be wasted. Jt7lat do we do now? Please contact Molly James 01225 872939 if you need any information, have any suggestions, or would like to spend a day at the centre.
SALTFORD EVENING WOMENS' INSTITUTE The February meeting of Saltford Evening W.L was a reai winner. .. the business part went through smoothly and we now have our own microphone ... voted by all to be a great asset. Arrangements were made for local walks, the annual dinner and the summer outing to Worcester. The speaker was Mrs Leslie Hudson Jessop of "Assignments", a marriage bureau she runs on very professional lines ... certainly not cheap but very, very thorough. Question time provided much more interest... fun and quips from the audience._. the funniest one from a member asking to be considered a match for a really wealthy client she had mentioned she could not place. Mrs Hudson Jessop donated her fee to Childline Head Injuries charity. At the March meeting the speaker, Mrs Wilde, spoke movingly about the work of the Children's Hospice ... Liulebridge

KEYNSHAM LIGHT OPERA GROUP Keynsham Light Opera Group, or KLOGS, as we are more commonly known, has come a long way in the last few years. Our move from the Cadbury Fry theatre into Saltford Hall, together with several changes in producers, proved to be quite a rocky ride for a few years. But now things have changed and we can look back with considerable satisfaction and pride to our recent successes. Our Autumn shows produced by our very own Barbara O'Keefe have proved to be so very popular with a wide variety of differing content on the same theme ... The Musical!. .. Magic of the Musical!, Music from the Movies and Highlights of the Musical. They all had their own magic and seemed to give great pleasure to everyone (including all those taking part!) Spring is the time for our main show and the last two, produced by John Wiltshire, have been wonderful box office successes. So what have we in store for you this year? After the frozen Russian background for Fiddler and the very green hills of Austria we are off to Bonnie Scotland for that magical village of 'Brigadoon' which only appears once in
16
every 1 ()() years .... and 1998 just happens to be that year so you should make sure that you book your ticket and share in the magic. We do however need 'new blood' in order to continue these successes. After seeing the show, why not think seriously about joining the group? Male or Female - if you can sing reasonably well or have acting or dancing talents, why not come along and see what a great time you can have on the stage? Keith Richards Chairman.
KEYNSHAM ORCHESTRA At Easter, 39 musicians will be travelling to Libourne, Keynsham's twinning town, near Bordeaux. The journey will be by Eurostar, and we will be spending five days there, hosted by families of the Libourne Choir. Two concerts have been arranged, one for the orchestra and the second a joint concert with the French Choir. We shall accompany two choral pieces, Part I of John Rutter's 'GLORIA' and Sir Hubert Parry's anthem 'BLEST PAIR OF SIRENS' Some excursions have been arranged and everyone is looking forward to our second visit - the first was in 1995. On July 18th the orchestra will be involved in a repeat performance of the musical 'A BRIDGE ACROSS THE FLOOD' specially written for Keynsham Floods in 1965. Further details in the next issue of SCAN. We would welcome more string and horn players and a trumpet. Please contact our chairman Steve Drew on 0117985 8269 or conductor John Atkin on 01225 461124.

(Continued from Page 16) started by parents who wanted to be involved in the organisation and have a say in the running of the group, which is different to the privately owned groups. Today Salt ford Pre-school is still organised by a committee of parents as then, and is run as a charity, all proceeds being reinvested into the group for the benefit of the children. As a member of the Pre-school Learning Alliance, the curriculum is planned to ensure an all round basic grounding (following SCAA guidelines) for all children before they start school. Although the location is the same over the 20 years there have been changes. Government legislation dictates that the leaders of pre-schools must be qualified to a recognised level, and our two new leaders Tanya Worth and J ill Dempster have both attained this level. We are also privileged to have the 'Tiny Tumblers' on Mondays which is unique to our group. The children have lots of fun playing on the full size trampoline, bouncy castle, in the ball pool and with the soft play equipment. The group has been well supported over the years and has been popular with children and parents alike. We are set to develop further our facilities boosted by donations from local businesses and the Parish Council, with the purchase of new toys, books and play equipment. We are looking forward to another successful 20 years in caring for the children of the community. There are currently spaces available for children aged between 2 years 9 months and 5 years. We meet Monday to Friday from 9.15am to 12.1Spm and the fees are £4.00 Mondays (inc Tiny Tumblers) and £3.50 Tuesday - Friday.

SAL TFORD AFTERNOON TOWNSWOMENS' GUILD On February 25th we went to see "Lcs Miserables" at the Bristol Hippodrome. What a splendid show - we all enjoyed it and had a very entertaining afternoon. The Bristol Park and Ride is certainly a blessing. The Bath T.G. Federation had a successful coffee morning February 25th in Bath. We P'ltered several exhibits thanks to the artistic cooking and other skills of our members. Doreen Gale cooked nine different and wonderful looking biscuits and Sybil Young painted a greetings card with the United Kingdom symbols on it -what superb efforts. February 17th we had a friendly and cheerful afternoon playing skittles with the W.I. They can skittle better than us but we all enjoyed it. We repeated this afternoon again on March 17th. It was just as cheerful and the W.1. won again. We will be repeating this on April 28th. March 10th was our Guild afternoon and the speaker, Mr Martock was talking about his time with the Mayors of Bristol. I was told that every ones faces ached with laughing. Our next meeting is on April 14th which will be our A.G.M. The committee intend to serve tea and cakes. We are a cheerful chatty bunch so if you want to join in the chatter come and give us a whirl -Marjorie 872176.

FRlENDS OF SALTFORD LIBRARY
Who are they? Well, last year when our local library faced possible closure in the face of economies required by B.A.N.E.S. a small group of people carne together in an effort to increase local interest and use of the library. The 'Friends' meet at regular intervals on a Friday evening in the library. The meeting is chaired by a Local Parish Councillor or by Miss Jane Smith our Area Librarian. Small fund raising projects to date have been a Saturday morning Coffee event, ideas for floral arrangements to brighten the library and contributions to S. C. A. N. on library mailers including news of new books in stock. The next coffee morning will have been on 21 February, the day after the library re-opens following the computer installation which links us with other local libraries and which will provide users of all ages with access [0 a whole range of information packages. Why not pop in, meet the very helpful and friendly stafr and collect an 'Opening Times' list. M r M Guthrie - Saltford Parish Council.
