Hall Manager Hello, please allow me to introduce my-self. I’m Chris Pope, the new Hall Man-ager. As most of you will be aware, the Hall complex provides a significant asset for the people of Saltford and surround-ing areas and has done for many years. I am keen to ensure that we offer the best possible service for our us-ers. Consequently, I would like to invite any current or potential users to come in and meet with me to talk about their ex-perience or requirements or just to have a look around. If you would like to take up my offer, then please contact me on the Booking Office number: 01225 874081 or by e-mail to [email protected]. Alterna-tively, our booking staff, Helen and Kate, are here to help each morning, Monday to Friday. Chris Pope

New Chairperson. Unfortunately, Patrick Coll, elected as Chairperson of Saltford Community As-sociation at the AGM in March, felt un-able to continue in that role, and so re-signed in June. Thanks to him for his efforts. Fortunately we now have a new person at the helm. His name is Steve Johnson, who has served on the gov-erning body of Saltford School, and who has offered his skills to the Asso-ciation. We’re now looking forward to a period of stability on the committee whilst the Hall undergoes some changes. If there are, out there, others willing to offer a little time and effort for the good of the community, either as a trustee or as a practical person, we’d love to hear from you.

Can you help for 3—5 hours a month ?

This lunch club meets every Thursday at the Hinton Close Meeting Room from 10.00am to 3.00pm. We cater for 16 people – all elderly—who live alone or with carers. Our members enjoy companionship, a range of ac-tivities and a lunch. We need more voluntary helpers to keep the Day Centre going and main-tain the high standard of care and at-tention for our members. Can you give one day a month from 10.00am until 3.00pm? Or, perhaps you would like to join us each Thursday as a member. We currently have a small number of vacancies. For more information about helping, or joining the Day Centre, please con-tact one of our co-ordinators on 07505178520 or perhaps you would like to call in one Thursday to talk to a co-ordinator and find out more. Claverton Road Play Area

The new ‘Typhoon’ play equipment in the play area next to Saltford Primary

School, Claverton Road, has been damaged by vandals. Anyone with any infor-

mation on this damage should contact Keynsham Police on 0845 456 7000.

The Parish Council is keen to see the Typhoon reinstated, and if you support

this, contact your Bath & North East Somerset Councillor:

Francine Haeberling 01225 872199 or Gordon Wood 01225 873453.

Hot Air Paper Lanterns

Some of these ‘Chinese lanterns’ have been found in Saltford, causing concern

over possible fire hazard or damage to people or equipment. Please do not re-

lease these lanterns as you cannot control where they will land.

Saltford Footpath Maps show all the footpaths around Saltford as well as

places of interest in the village. They are for sale at £1 each from Saltford Post

Good folk of Saltford we need your

The SCA Fundraising Committee will shortly embark on the task of putting to-gether our 2011 schedule of events. However, we want to be sure we direct our efforts to staging events that are of real interest to the good folk of Saltford. We therefore invite you to send us your ideas by email to [email protected] or pop them into the Booking Office at the Hall. We're particularly looking to arrange events that appeal to all types of different age groups. What would also be helpful are your comments about this years program so far. What did people like or dislike about the events? To remind you, the 4 main events have been the Bath Brass Band, the Jazz Evening, the concert by the RISCA Male Voice Choir and the recent Big Quiz . Tell us what you think and we promise to take all comments/views into consideration in our planning. Thanking you in advance for your contributions.

New weekly food waste recycling collections for Bath and North East Somerset residents From 4 October 2010 Bath & North East Somerset Council will be introduc-ing a new weekly food waste recycling collection for all residents who are cur-rently able to use our green box recycling service. Our recycling crews will collect the food waste every week, on the same day as your recycling and rubbish. How will the collections work? From 20 September, we will be delivering two new storage containers to your home with full instructions on how to use them. The smaller kitchen caddy (about 20cm high) can be kept in your kitchen to store your food scraps conveniently before putting them into the larger food waste bin (about 40cms high) for weekly collection. The outside food waste bin is lockable to keep it secure from animals and birds. We will also be giving you a supply of compostable liners (bags made from potato starch), to line your kitchen caddy for the first few months. Tie these up and empty regularly into your larger food waste bin. When you run out of the initial supply of liners you can use newspaper to line your caddy or buy more compostable liners from local shops and outlets. You will be able to recycle all your raw and cooked food waste including: Meat and bones Bread and pastries Dairy Fish Fruit and vegetables Tea and coffee grounds and even uneaten food scrapings from your plate. If you compost at home already please continue to do this but the new collec-tions will be useful for things like bones and cooked food which you can’t put in your home compost bin. What will happen to the food waste you collect? We are currently awaiting the results from a tender process for the contract for the treatment for our food waste. It will be treated through one of two proc-esses - in vessel composting (IVC) or anaerobic digestion (AD). This will turn your food waste into useful products - compost or renewable energy and fuel, instead of being buried in landfill sites. Find out the latest news on this new service at www.bathnes.gov.uk/

Saltford Townswomen’s Guild The May meeting of the Guild was very well attended and members settled in to discuss the business of the Guild and Federation – a book had been pre-pared by the Federation Chairman cov-ering the story of the Federation from its formation and each member was given this book as a keepsake. The speaker was Audrey Mitchell, who, at 65, decided to go back-packing in Thai-land. She recounted her adventures and some of them sounded a bit scary. She also showed beautiful pho-tographs and several objects and silks she had brought back with her. Mem-bers admired her spirit in such an ad-venture, but were any inspired to follow suit? – it remains to be seen! The June meeting listened to the speaker Margaret Flux talking about her holiday experience. No warm sunny weather this month because she trav-elled to the Antarctic on a survey ship. Hence her talk was entitled “Pick up a Penguin”. Before she started, people wondered if the ‘Penguin’ might be a chocolate biscuit. The query was soon put to rest as she showed pictures of herself in layer upon layer of warm clothing. She told of the storms at sea and the bitterly cold weather, which was endured to see the wildlife, pen-guins, reindeer and seals as well as a church and buildings left by former ex-plorers. A truly remarkable journey, never to be forgotten. And did she pick up a penguin? Sadly not, as no-one was allowed six feet of them, but it was still worth the journey.

Affiliated Organisation News Saltford Evening Women’s Institute June was a very busy month for S.E.W.I. At the monthly meeting the speaker, Mrs Mary Teed, recounted the many trials and tribulations of the nu-merous moves she and her family had to make as a Methodist minister. About 30 members and friends enjoyed the 40

th Anniversary lunch at the Bishop’s

Palace and Gardens in Wells. The visit to Marshfield Ice Cream factory on a beautiful summer’s day was appropri-ate. All enjoyed seeing and hearing about the making of ice cream and be-ing able to purchase some of the prod-ucts at the end. The Garden Party took place on a cooler afternoon and mem-bers were able to enjoy tea and cakes. The group meeting hosted by Saltford was well attended and the supper was delicious. At our July meeting Glynis Tyrrell gave us a brief history of hats throughout the ages and explained how modern hats were made. After the talk, members were able to try on the many examples of hats and fascinators that she had brought with her. Forthcoming Events Walks -Weds 11

Keynsham & Saltford Wine Circle Michael North gave us an informative and interesting talk entitled “The Olive Oil Club” at our May meeting. He told us that the best olive oil should cost between £15 to £60 per bottle. When buying olives we should ask if they have been sun dried or soaked in brine, (both of which are best) and how old they are (not more than eight weeks). He called for five volunteers who had not had any alcohol (at a Wine Circle?) to do some comparative and proper tasting of the olive oils that had been brought along. They were far supe-rior to the oils bought in supermar-kets. We were all treated to a taste of a 100-year-old balsamic vinegar to round off the talk. The red dry wine competition was won by Tessa Lesser, with Peter Church in second place and Sally Dummott third. In June Percy Mellor, our President, offered us a selection of three white wines, two made from carton fruit juices, and one from a kit, for us to choose which we would use for the Members Recipe Competition in De-cember. All of the wines were very pleasant, but the members finally decided upon one litre of peach and grape juices plus three litres of white grape juice for the competition. Percy also entertained us with a selection of

schoolboy “howlers” and a tasting of some of his homemade wines. They were all very good but the star was an eighteen-year-old Golden Des-sert – unfortunately we can’t wait an-other eighteen years for the next one. The Member’s Choice meeting, postponed from January featured at the July meeting. The talk was called “Thirst Aid”, presented by David Hallett. David teaches First Aid for the St. John’s Ambulance Bri-gade and gave us the benefit of his knowledge. He demonstrated the actions to be taken if you should come across a casualty, which was most valuable information for us. However, to lighten up the evening, he broke up his talk with tastings of five European wines bought from Aldi’s. We should all now know what to do in a medical emergency and where to buy some good, inex-pensive wine. The dancing season is now quiet, with only our own Summer Dance coming up on Friday 13

th August

2010, with a supper and live music provided by Chris Stone. In September we will be having the usual Charity Auction If you would like to join us or would like more information, please contact Alan Dummott: Telephone 01225 873493

Keynsham Orchestra Saturday 3 July produced a perfect summer’s evening for the orchestra to support the Keynsham Music Festival by performing a selection of classical compositions with the assistance of its guest soprano, Angharad Watkeys. The first half comprised of works by composers from Italy, France and Russia containing a Spanish theme such as Rossini’s Overture The Bar-ber of Seville, Bizet’s Carmen suites and Rimsky Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol. After the interval came a touch of the Proms with music by English composers including Sir Henry Wood’s popular Fantasia on British Sea Songs, a march from El-gar’s Pomp and Circumstance and Sir Hubert Parry’s Jerusalem. The experience, knowledge and sense of humour addressed to play-ers and audience by the conductor Frank O’Connor made this an enjoy-able occasion for all who participated. The orchestra’s next concert is sched-uled for Saturday evening 27th No-vember in St John the Baptist Church, Keynsham.
