We Need Your Help for 2 Important Reasons

1. The value the community association add to the village

The Saltford Community Association is a registered charity set up for the benefit of Saltford residents. It runs the bi-annual festival, provides community services, regular entertainment for young and old alike and maintains Saltford Hall. Saltford Festival was a fantastic success last year so next year the SCA will organise another Festival with around 80 events spread over the 9 days. In addition both via the bi-monthly SCAN and our own website, we provide information for the benefit of the local community.

Over the last few years we have spent over £110,000 on maintaining and improving the access, safety and facilities at the Hall, whilst continuing to reduce running costs through energy saving measures. We are grateful to the Parish Council, our local BANES Councilors, SITA Trust and various other bod-ies in providing grants totaling £29,000. The vast majority of our annual income comes from hiring out rooms at the Hall, but without the SCA raising money from fundraising and donations we would run at a substantial loss each year.

We hope that Saltford residents value what the SCA contributes towards our village life. Enclosed with this edition of SCAN is an envelope for any donation you feel you can make (cheque should be made payable to Saltford Community Association). If possible, please do sign and complete the front of the envelope so that we can claim an additional 25% Gift Aid from our friends at the Tax Office.

2. Reopening of previously closed permissive path ways to south and west of the village

The permissive footpaths to the south and west of Saltford were closed at the end of 2013 following the withdrawal of subsidy for public access by DEFRA.

Saltford Parish Council hosted a packed public meeting on the issue in August and residents voiced a strong desire to donate towards their reopening as most residents will benefit from these paths. Since the meeting, Saltford Community Association has worked with the local farmer, Mr Adam Stratton, and have signed a legal agreement allowing over 4.5km of the permissive paths shown on the map in green (purple are public footpaths) to re-open to walkers and riders from 30 November 2014. This has only been possible as a result of Eveleighs Estate Agents coming forward with a generous donation to fund the first year of the arrangement.

In order for this agreement to remain in place next and each subsequent year, the SCA needs specific donations to raise the £3000 needed to compensate the farmer for loss of arable land and to pay for the maintenance of the paths and associated insurance and legal costs.

We are extremely grateful to Eveleighs for funding the first year to allow the paths to re-open straighta-way but without regular, annual donations from residents to cover the costs the SCA will not be able to keep these paths open and it is highly likely that once closed they will remain closed for ever as the land will be planted with crops.

£3000 is a fairly significant sum and in order to ensure we can keep this amenity open for the community we would ask that walkers consider £25 or more and horse riders £50 or more.

Remember if we can’t raise £3000 the paths shut, possibly for ever!

Robin Eveleigh of Eveleighs Estate Agents said “Having attended the public meeting on August 20th hosted by the Parish Council, my business partner and I were struck by the overwhelming desire by so many local residents to find a solution to re-opening the much loved and well trodden paths to the south of Saltford, both for walkers and riders alike. It struck me that this was the perfect opportunity to show our great appreciation to so many local residents who have supported Eveleighs Estate Agents since starting in Saltford & Keynsham 3 years ago to where it is now.”

SCA Chair, Steve Johnson added “We are delighted and grateful that Everleigh’s Estate Agents have made this very generous donation to the community of Saltford to keep these paths open for the next year. These paths provide fantastic recreational opportunities to the south and west of the village and coupled with those around the rest of the village, we have a significant amount of beautiful countryside for everyone to enjoy. We very much hope that all walkers and riders will donate generously to the SCA to allow these to continue to remain open.”

As mentioned above, this SCAN should include a donation envelope for completion and return to a num-ber of addresses around the village. Please complete the front of the envelope for Gift Aid purposes and then indicate on the reverse how much you would like directed to the SCA and how much to the paths. If there is no envelope please get in touch with us if you wish to donate.

Finally we would like to thank you for your continued support in attending the various fundraising events we have staged throughout the year and to thank all those who have volunteered their time to help with these events and to deliver this SCAN Magazine every other month.

The Saltford Poppies

Inspired by the poppies installed at the Tower of London to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the

First World War and the 888,246 British and Colonial servicemen killed during the war, the ‘Saltford Pop-

pies’ remember the seventeen Saltford men who made the ultimate sacrifice during WW1.

The youngest recorded Saltford WW1 casualty was Private

Reginald James LOWMAN, son of Joseph and Minnie, who

lived at Maud Buildings, Saltford. Reginald originally joined the

Worcester Regiment but later transferred to the newly formed

Machine Gun Corps. He was killed in action, aged 19, in March

1918 and is commemorated on the Somme (Pozieres) war

memorial.

The oldest recorded casualty was 2nd Lieutenant Henry

Charles TARR who lived at the Tunnel House (opposite this

memorial). Henry enlisted with the Royal Army Service Corps

in June 1917, aged 44. He joined the British Egypt Expedition-

ary Force in February 1918 and died less than a year later, just

before his 46th birthday, at Ras-El-Tin military hospital and is

buried at the Alexandria War Memorial cemetery.

Three members of the same Saltford family are named: Sidney, William and Maurice GODDARD all lived

at the Jolly Sailor public house before each joined the Royal Navy between 1903 and 1907. By November

1915 they were serving on separate Royal Navy warships but within a year of the death of Sidney whilst

serving on HMS LARKSPUR in November 1915, William and Maurice had also been killed. Sidney is

buried in St Mary’s church graveyard in Saltford. William Goddard signed up at 18 and died just after his

30th birthday, in May 1916 whilst serving on HMS SPITFIRE. Maurice who enlisted as a Royal Marine in

1907, died aged 32 whilst serving on HMS CORNWALL in September 1916 and is buried at the Kranji war

memorial cemetery in Singapore.

An additional 6 poppies commemorate the Saltford

residents who also made the ultimate sacrifice

during WW2.

The Saltford poppies were made by local scout leaders & their families and our resident potter Yvonne Halton. The cost of materials was covered by Saltford Parish Council together with the generous support of local companies Rotork and Precision Profiles.

The Saltford poppies will be on display for six weeks and will be available to purchase via a charitable donation, which will be transferred in full, to the Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes. If you wish to purchase a Saltford poppy please drop a note with your contact details into 69 High Street.

SALTFORD SCHOOL NEEDS YOU

On Saturday 20 June 2015 we will be holding our popular summer fair on the final weekend of Saltford Festival. The theme for the fair will be ‘Through The Wars’ to coincide with the 70th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the ongoing commemorations for the First World War. We are hoping to have attractions, entertainment and displays to fit in with the theme and would like local people who might be able to help to get in touch. We would love to hear from anyone who has military equipment or vehicles that children could explore, acts that could provide live music, a miliatry style assault course or any military groups or clubs who could attend on the date. If you think you can help please contact the PTA via the school on 01225 872185 or email [email protected]

KEYNSHAM & SALTFORD WINE CIRCLE

The Charity Bottle Auction held in September raised £152. A draw was held to decide which or-ganisation should benefit from these funds and the result was “Help for Heroes”. A cheque will be presented to them at a later date. To conclude the evening an American supper was enjoyed by all.The Annual Wine Competition featured at our Oc-tober meeting and was judged by Peter and Carol Coombs and Marg Gittins who are local National

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD PROBUS CLUB

All the arguments for and against Saltford getting a new railway station must have made many people think about what the old one looked like - so it was interesting for members of Keynsham and Saltford Probus Club to see at their October meeting a photo of the bridge which used to span the tracks. There was a view, too, of a more ornate former bridge at Keynsham station. Guest speaker Mike Oakley illustrated his talk with many slides of stations and halts that over the years served the railway network in and around Bath. A few survive; many have been lost, some disappearing completely from view while other buildings have been adapted to other uses.On the day before the club meeting there was to have been a visit to the Big Pit, a South Wales min-ing heritage museum. That had to be abandoned because of insufficient support.Undaunted, the club’s social committee (some of its members shown during discussions).met as planned to talk over other projects for the months

ahead. They were able to announce that a group holiday at Stourton-on-Severn is now fully booked up. Currently under consideration are spring visits to Avebury and the Royal Navy dockyards at Portsmouth. Because of heavy public demand provisional bookings have already been made for the musical “Annie” at Cardiff in August 2015.For several years the club has joined other town organisations in Remembrance Sunday commem-oration. Last year the younger St Keyna Probus Club joined in. This year St Keyna accepted an invitation to lay a joint poppy wreath as part of the ceremony.

Whilst the judging was taking place, our good friend Vernon Groves gave us a tutored tasting of six commercial wines. He compared two white wines and two red wines from South America and South Africa respectively and asked the audi-ence to choose which was the best - the South American wines came out on top. In addition we had a Rose wine from California and a French Monbazillac sweet wine from Lidls - this was very inexpensive - £7.99 a full bottle.A group of us attended the Nailsea Wine Circle’s Fancy Dress dance in October. The band was Julie Thursday and the theme was The World Wars - although how a group of Zulu Warriors become involved, I am not sure!” As usual, a good evening was had all.The November meeting featured the Wiltshire Beekeeper - Fred Swift, who gave us a most interesting talk on the nature of bees and the art of beekeeping He has over a thousand hives scat-tered throughout Wiltshire (hence the name) and had on display a great variety of products for us to sample. Our Members’ Recipe Competition will be held at our December followed by our seasonal eats of Christmas Cake and Port/Baileys Cream Liqueur. On the 20th December our Christmas Dance will take place at Saltford Hall, dancing to the live music of “Sound Company” - three musicians and a lady singer. After the election of the new committee, Judith Massey, an adviser for the Avon Federation of Women’s Institutes, spoke about the history and structure of the WI, including some of their ground-breaking campaigns. These included a resolution for the provision of school dinners (in 1926), a resolution for equal pay for equal work (in 1943), a resolution against litter (in 1954) which eventually led to the formation of the Keep Britain Tidy movement and a resolution against smoking in public places (in 1964). More recent resolutions have involved a campaign for the introduction of breast screening clinics, a campaign for public information about HIV and AIDS, a campaign to raise awareness of the nature and extent of violence against women, a campaign to tackle excess packaging, a cam-paign to draw attention to the plight of the honey-bee and, most recently, a campaign to encourage organ donation. Judith also talked about the work of the Association of Country Women Worldwide, to which the NFWI is affiliated. A trip to Westonbirt School Craft Fair took place in October and further trips - to Lacock Gaden Centre and the Bishop’s Palace in Wells are planned for November and December.SALTFORD SCRABBLE CLUB

Scrabble Club Founder Retires.

Frances Sheppard started Saltford Scrabble at the Hall in March 1994 and now feels it is time to hand over the reins, although she will still be a playing member. The Club is a very friendly one and although we do play seriously we are not fanatical, and make allowances for each other’s foibles. We particularly enjoy the sociability of the game and our annual get-together for a meal, usually at Saltford Gold Club, who give excellent service. Fran has often arranged some entertainment for us at these do’s. A particularly memorable one was when the ladies of Fran’s barber shop group sang for us.

DISTRICT COMMISSIONER STEPS DOWN

Janet Turner, who has been District Commis-sioner for Wansdyke Scouts for the past ten years, stepped down from that role at the recent Annual General Meeting. All Scout Commissioner roles have a ten-year lifespan. At a packed meeting in Radstock Scout Hall, district chairman John Mander recalled that dur-ing Janet’s leadership, numbers had risen by 70%, compared to 25% nationally. She had put a team together which saved the Radstock Scout Group from closure, organised two District Jamborees and had enabled the founding of a new Scout Group in Chew Stoke, and an Explorer Scout Unit in Clutton. Mr Mander said, “Janet has led this

district with enthusiasm and dedication. She is brilliant listener, very patient, and has an infectious sense of humour. Wansdyke Scouts have been very fortunate to have had a committed leader who has been so generous with her time.”Charlie and Jack, two scouts from Radstock, presented Mrs Turner with a personalised camp blanket, a gift voucher and bouquet on behalf of

the district. Stuart Ballard, deputy county commissioner, presented her with a Commis-sioner’s Commendation Award. Mrs Turner’s husband Dave was presented with a gift voucher to thank him for his unstinting support for his wife in her former role. Both Mr & Mrs Turner will continue their leadership roles in 1st Radstock Scouts.

Vacancy for Treasurer at Saltford Environment Group

Saltford Environment Group has an important vacancy to fill, that of Treasurer, which is also an of-ficer post on our Executive Committee. This is a great opportunity for getting involved and influencing voluntary work at the local community level for an organisation that is seeking to make positive change in Saltford. Since SEG was set up in 2011 we have grown to well over 300 members, and have run extremely effective campaigns including the station campaign and our successful defence of Saltford’s Green Belt from developers.

As we continue to grow and develop with a wide range of projects, the role profile for our new Treas-urer is as follows. He/she will need to be able to use SEG’s funds strategically to support a variety of projects, apply and use the latest financial and administrative procedures including online banking, ensure SEG complies with any HMRC or other relevant accounting requirements, keep under review the possibility of seeking charitable status for SEG and implement this if that path is chosen, and seek and apply for grants, sponsorship and other sources of financial support. Desirable qualities that would enable the new Treasurer to fulfil the role more effectively include an enthusiasm for SEG’s aims and objectives, good team-working skills, and the ability to represent SEG in public meetings or local events.

If you live in Saltford and think this voluntary position might possibly be something you could take on and you would enjoy being part of a small friendly team, please contact our Chairman (by email to [email protected] and include your telephone no.) to see if this might be suitable for you. View of Keynsham merging with the River Gironde which flows through Libourne

In September, we hosted sixteen friends from Libourne. Together we visited Castle Combe, Avebury and Berkeley. Social events included a buffet meal with entertainment from KLOGS & the newly formed Phoenix Keynsham Youth Theatre and a meal at Stock-wood Vale Golf Club. This left time for outings with host families, which included visits to Bristol, Bath, Clevedon, Wells, Chew Valley and garden centres.

Twinning members will pay a return visit to Libourne for a week in June 2015, when the Libourne Music Festival takes place (over weekend of 20/21 June). Why not join the association and put your name forward? It is FUN an you don’t have to speak fluent French!

Libourne is also twinned with towns in Germany and Spain. Official guests from the town visited Wellsway School, toured the new civic centre and met representatives of local organisations who plan to arrange visits for their members to groups with similar interests: the Scouts, Keynsham Orchestra & KLOGs and Avon County Rowing Club.

If you belong to a club or organisation which would like to ‘twin’ with a similar group in Libourne, the association could help to set this up.

During the month of October we have signed up two new members. They will be helped to achieve a good standard of play by our two qualified coaches. All good news at the early stages of the season. Let’s hope the feel-good factor continues!! So..

Bristol Avon Sailing Clubin “Bart’s Bash” Record Breaker

On Sunday 21 September the Bristol Avon Sailing club based at Saltford took part in Bart’s Bash, a fundraising event and world record attempt for the largest sailing race in the World on behalf of the charity, the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. 25 boats took part in a 6-lap race on the River Avon at Saltford. Mr Cian Hooper in a “Rooster 8.1” boat was first over the finish line. The event was organised by Vice-Commodore Rob Crabbe. Rick Staples of Network Commercial Systems and Club President spon-sored the event. Cllr Duncan Hounsell, Chair of Saltford Parish Council, and Thomas Auld, local resident, acted as the independent “verifiers” for the event.

Saltford Environment Group - Station CampaignRe-opening Saltford station is part of the vision for the MetroWest “overground” bringing half-hourly rail services that will criss-cross the Bristol-Bath sub-region All developments on the railway have to follow Network Rail’s 8-stage process called the GRIP process. The first four

stages are about planning and the final four about implementation. Re-opening Saltford station is about at stage 2. Saltford Parish Council voted by 6 votes to zero with one abstention at its October meeting to ask B&NES Council to take the project on to stage 3 of the process. A project has to be at least this stage to be eligible to bid for national or regional funding. The breaking news is that Cllr David Bellotti, B&NES Lib Dem Cabinet member for resources, has announced £250,000 in the proposed Lib Dem budget for 2015/16 to take the re-opening of Saltford Station forward to stages 3 and 4. These stages involve much more detailed work on costs, design and finance. The objective is to make the project to re-open Saltford station “shovel ready”. The proposed budget is subject to consultation and approval by the full B&NES Council in February 2015.The £33 million up-grade of the railway line between Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway station at Filton Bank has been given the go-ahead and work starts in December. The doubling of the railway lines to four tracks at that location is crucial to introducing MetroWest over the wider area, including Saltford, because those extra lines increase general capacity. A representative from FirstGroup (First Great Western) who operate the train services in the region has visited the Saltford station site in October to become more familiar with the Saltford station project.

Saltford Festival Photographic CompetitionAs promised here is the first update for the 2015 photographic competition. Although specific dates have not yet been set, we will ask for images to be submitted in early March 2015. The decision on the winning entries will be made by the end of March. There will be a winner for each of the two categories, under 18 and over 18. The twelve best images will be displayed in Saltford Hall and will also be featured in the Salford Community Association’s calendar for 2016. This calendar will be available for the festival.

So what to take photographs of?

Well the next few months should provide some wonderful opportunities for pictures, Autumn leaves, Christmas lights, first frosts, spring flowers, nature in and around Saltford, the list could be endless.

To help absolute beginners we’ll run a very basis photography talk at Saltford Hall. It will be in the Kelston Room at 11.15 a.m. on 9th December and will last about 45 minutes.

Happy picture making.

ChoirJam sings for Jessie MayTo be told that your child will die before you is every parent’s worst nightmare. For many families in the local area, this is a reality. Some of these children will die when they’re very young; others will deteriorate slowly over a number of years, and their full-time care usually falls to parents who have to cope - 365 days a year.

At their Christmas concerts at Saltford Hall on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th November, Keynsham’s pop choir, ChoirJam, will be raising money for the Jessie May Trust based in Kingswood and Bath which supports terminally ill children and their families.

The choir, which has been going since 2011, has 120 members and is well-known for its fun, energetic and uplifting live performances. Emma Hutchinson, ChoirJam director, said: “I asked the ‘Jammers’ to nominate which local charity they would like to benefit from our Christmas concerts, and Jessie May, which supports several of our members’ families, was the most popular choice. Jessie May believe in helping every child reach their potential and in making the most of the precious time they have; Christ-mas seems like an especially apt time of the year to raise money for them.”

The choir, accompanied by their live band, will be singing pop songs from the 1960’s to recent chart hits including “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, Labi Siffre’s “Something Inside So Strong” and festive songs like Winter Wonderland.

Tickets for the concerts cost £6 and are on sale now at Saltford Post Office, in person at Saltford Hall Booking Office (or email [email protected]), via [email protected] or the ChoirJam Face-book page, or call/text Emma on 07793 983040.

Following the installation of a new lift in the foyer of Saltford Hall the Community Association would li e to refurbish the entrance foyer. ur vision is to provide a softer, more modern and inviting entrance area whilst updating the bar facilities and boo sales areas.

his is an e citing opportunity for an interior designer to stretch their imagination, have the pleasure of seeing their design in use at a community location and be present at the opening ceremony, which will be well publicised locally.

If you would be prepared to volunteer then please ring Steve Johnson 01225 872025 or 07967 704706 or mail him Chair saltfordhall.co.uwho will be pleased to discuss this opportunity.

GRAND FLEA MARKETSunday 22nd February 2015 from 10 am - 1 pm

Flea Markets are very popular nationally and a group of us decided last September to introduce the idea to Saltford and what a huge success it was! We have therefore decided to hold another.

At a Flea Market you need to book a table and bring along any items that you want to sell. A chance to clear the attic, the garage, the shed or even your house cannot be missed! I already know of books and ephemera, ceramics (china of all ages), vintage artifacts (old things) plants for the Spring garden, camping equipment. If you have the job of clearing a house - think of the Flea market and come along.

Book a table £15 (6 ft) £10 (3ft)for booking form email [email protected] [email protected] or phone 01225 872489.

You keep the takings, we keep the stall money!

We also provide the famous Saltford Cafe and the inevitable Bacon Butties!!

OTHER NEWSSaltford Santa Dash 2014

The 2013 Santa Dash was a sell out and saw 500 Santa’s and 200 Elves raise almost £14,000 for CRY and this year we are accepting 750 Santa’s and 300 Mini Santas.... quite a sight!

This year The Dash will be run in aid of CLIC Sargent and The Ellen MacArther Cancer Trust once again supporting a local teenager Corey Clifton who has received huge ben-efits from both charities.

While some people are counting the number of shopping days to Christmas...... Saltford Santa Dash organisers are counting the number of Santa’s and Mini Santa’s who have entered and how many spaces there are left!

The hundreds of Santa Dashers already registered are counting the number of days they have left to train

And preparing to entertain us, Jazzercise are planning their warm up routine, Choir Jam are rehearsing their Christmas repertoire and the Air Cadets Marching Band are polish-ing up their performance

We are delighted that para Olympian Ben Rushgrove will be join-ing us again this year no doubt hoping for a Saltford Santa Dash Medal to add to his Olympic medals!

Residents on the route are planning their house parties so they will be out to support the runners and Saltford Sports and Social Club are ensuring their Sports Ground will be in good condition for the Mini Santa’s Race and to get the 5 mile Dash off to a flying start. The Sports Club Bar will be open and they will be provid-ing refreshments alongside Zoomoffee both intent on sustaining spectators and reviving runners!

If you would like to take part in this fantastic community charity fun run visit www.saltfordsantadash.webs.com and sign up now!

If you are not taking part or planning to spectate we would like to make you aware that roads along the route may become a little congested between 11am and 12.30pm so if you have a time critical journey please take this into consideration. With thanks for you understanding

Message from Jacob Rees-Mogg MPDepartmental Select Committees (DSC) were introduced in the Westminster Parlia-ment in 1979 and are often seen as being one of the most important reforms in the recent history of the House of Commons. The general function of select committees is to hold to account individual departments and the Government as a whole. Whilst most DSCs scrutinise a specific Government department, for example the Defence Committee scrutinises the Ministry of Defence, there are a number of committees with broader remits that cross departments. Select Committees have undergone numerous reforms since their inception, particularly through the Wright Reforms introduced in 2010. Committee chairmen are now elected by MPs and so are more independent in their approach.

I serve on the European Scrutiny Committee (ESC) which has a wide remit. The Com-mittee looks at over one thousand documents a year sending a few for debate on the floor of the House and a further thirty or so for debate in committee. Although this means European law is subject to fewer checks than domestic legislation it at least en-sures that the most important ones are highlighted. The ESC also has the power to ob-tain an opinion from a specific select committee on a particular issue. This is a means of requesting in depth scrutiny in a specific area to help ensure European measures are thoroughly considered.

The other select committee I am on is the Procedure Committee which discusses the way the House of Commons operates. Currently we are considering e-petitions. This has a fascinating historic resonance as petitions became early forms of legislation and are one of the best ways for voters to seek redress of grievance through Parliament. Making them an effective electronic means of challenging the government is an inter-esting and important challenge.

SALTFORD FESTIVAL 2015Saturday 13th June - Sunday 21st June

HELP, There are still holes in the fabric!

An early draft programme for Saltford Festival 2015 is in place. It is very much a draft. There are still gaps in the pattern of events that make it look like a loosely woven gar-ment!

A Night of Magic and Mystery with Saltford’s John Isaacs, a comedy evening with the talented Welsh comedian, Bob Webb, Saltford’s ever popular Decade Dolls, who will devise a ‘50’s night’ and the highly recommended Frenchman Street, jazz band all give us confidence, though, that the gaps will soon close and the 9 days of Festival will be presented seamlessly.

There are to be quizes, a photo competition, scarecrows lurking, walks to explore the history, geology and footpaths of the village. The Dog Show will return to the Church lawn and there will be tea in the Manor House garden. With the High Street closed for a few hours, there will be fun and games on The Old Village Day, with plenty of activ-ity and help from the Scouts in Saltford House garden. The Golf Club, the School, the Church the Pubs and some gardens are just a few of the organisations opening their doors.

Boats, burgers and a village picnic, with the help of the Guides, will conclude the festi-val with a celebration of the River for the Finale..

Help is needed. We have set aside an evening during the festival week for a youth event but we need to find out more about what young people would like and who is willing to give time and initiative to make it work. The festival plan is to provide events that suit all ages, but we are conscious that we have not quite achieved this yet.

Please come forward with ideas and offers of help. We need new faces and inspiration.

Saltford Festival will be in its 3rd year in 2015. Surely it cannot rain again but who knows? Jill Williams (01225 872489)

Community Awards 2015

The Parish Council is running its Community Awards scheme again in 2015. Awards will be given to people in Saltford who make a positive contribution to Saltford life, show-ing initiative, commitment or leadership in the local community. Winners will receive an A4 certificate on high quality paper and £60 towards the award winner’s chosen Saltford group, project, cause or charity. Awards are given in the categories of Young Person of the Year, Good Neighbour in Saltford, and Exemplary Achievement Award – but in 2014 we received no nominations for Young Person of the Year, so we would particularly like to encourage these in 2015. So if you know someone who deserves an award for what they do in the community, pick up a nomination form from the Parish Council office in Saltford library or downloadable from www.saltfordparishcouncil.gov.uk. Forms must be received by the Clerk by the end of Friday 13 February 2015.

Saltford Railway Station

Following the results of the informal public consultation exercise launched at the public exhibition held in Saltford in February 2014, regarding the possible reopening of Salt-ford Railway Station, Saltford Parish Council agreed at its October 2014 meeting to ask B&NES Council Cabinet to consider the Higher Level Output Assessment (HLOA) report and to take the project to GRIP (Governance in Railway Projects) stage 3 of Network Rail’s GRIP process for railway development.

St Mary’s churchyard walls

M & S Stonemasons have completed the necessary repairs to the churchyard boundary walls, including the south wall where the footpath was temporarily diverted.

Grant to Saltford Scouts

The Parish Council made a grant of £300 to Saltford Scouts towards the costs of three Saltford Scouts attending the World Scout Jamboree in Japan in summer 2015.

Ceramic poppies

The Parish Council has funded the materials used by volunteers to make the ceramic poppies to be ‘planted’ at the War Memorial for Remembrance Day, after which the Scouts will offer the poppies (as per the Tower of London) for individuals to ‘purchase’ via a charitable donation.
