Issue No 10 Oct'96/Nov'96
Do you value what Saltford Community Association provides ? Two of the main benefits to Saltford that are provided by the Association are Saltford Hall and this bi-monthly news booklet. Take a look at Pages 9, 10 & 11 of this issue to see what goes on at Saltford Hall. It may surprise you ! One thing is certain, you get this booklet delivered to your house free of charge every two months ! Do you read it ? If not, please take a few minutes to browse through this copy. All the running of the hall including decorating and most of the financing and maintenance come from the voluntary efforts of our members and what a credit that is to all who join in. If you have something to offer, or wish to join in with any activity you will find a list of contacts for most of the clubs in this issue. If you would like to help run the S.C.A itself then please contact our Chairman Ron Anderton on 0117 986 2467 or John Thomas, Vice Chairman on Oll7 986 3869 and tell them what you would like to do. If you are busy and have no time to spare but still think our efforts deserve your support, then simply show this by becoming a member of the S.C.A. Join when our Street Collector calls or send 50p per person with your name and address to our Membership Secretary, Mrs Brenda Jones, 24, Grange Road, Saltford, Bristol BS18 3AG.
The Coffee Shop at The Wishbone Saltford's charming restaurant The Wishbone is the meeting place each week of The Coffee Shop which is now in it's fourth year. Inspired by StMary's Church, with the co-operation of the proprietors David and Rosemary Turner, The Coffee Shop provides a meeting place every Thursday morning starting at lO.OOam for people to meet and make friends. A team of "hosts" from the church ensure that anybody who comes by themselves will never remain alone. Angela Brown explains, "It is so nice to see people with the 'coffee set' . Many have made good friends too by just turning up initially. So if you would like a cup of coffee at 15p and a convivial chat with someone then do come along on any Thursday.
Toe H - "Tea and Chat" Afternoons On one Saturday afternoon of each month at 2.30pm, Saltford Branch Toe H run a "Tea and Chat" afternoon in the Wansdyke Room at Saltford Hall for people living alone. The next two are being run on 19th October and 16th November so if you would like a friendly couple of hours , a clip of tea, a chat and maybe a game of scrabble, do go along. You will find a warm welcome awaiting you and also perhaps learn that in Saltford there are people who are very caring and pleased to make you feel wanted and part of the community.

Newspaper and Magazine Collection The August collection totalled 12.68 tonnes and we hope that the October collection will exceed this figure. Please save all your newspapers and Magazines and do not include telephone directories or any extraneous items such as bank statements, perso.nal letters etc. The paper mill will not accept such items and consequently we have to remove & dispose of them. The next collection is on Tuesday 1st October and Saltford Hall will be open from 2.00pm.
1996 Hall Painting Exercise Nearly all our objectives were accomplished even though other additional work had been done during the fortnight set aside. The S.C. A. wishes to thank the following for their help in this cost saving work: Mesdames: P.Herapath, D. Thomas, E. West, J.Chandler & Mrs Parker. Messrs: M.Guthrie, L.Smith, D.Warry, B.Coombs, G.Herapath, M.Fuller, A.Ford, R.Anderton, E.Meadley, G.Roscoe, D.Herniman, R.Chilcott, R.Street, J.Thomas, F.Baggott, R.Fowler, D.Baggott, L.Hanson & Building Committee Members R.Mould, C.Mould, J.Lillingston, A.Tonkin, J.Smee, B.Bigwood, R.Burke & R.Moore
John Dunce We are sorry to record the death of another of our Life Members. John Dunce was the brains behind the production of S.C.A.N. from its inception in October 1961. Initially he housed our old multilith machine at his carpet factory in Keynsham until, in 1965 on completion of our Print Room, it was moved to Saltford Hall & subsequently replaced by a newer model. Both machines were elderly but John, although self taught, kept them going, sometimes by unorthodox methods! He served our Association for some 25 years before modern technology took over. John also sowed the seed which led us to seek permission to build the car park behind the tennis courts ourselves when Keynsham Urban District Council decided not to proceed. That is another story but we completed it in three weeks.
S.C.A. Horticultural Show Fine flowers, vegetables, wines, homecraft, handicraft, photographs and pictures were on display at the 46th Horticultural Show at Saltford Hall on Saturday 14th September 1996. Entries were up on last year and cups were won by Messrs Brimple, Coombs, Keen and Knight and Mesdames Coombs, Rey and Taylor and by Kathy Cross. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to the other entrants and supporters of the Show.

Sectional Organisation News
Saltford Drama Club Did you know there are only 100 odd days left before Christmas Day ? By then all the shopping will be over, the lunch cooked, the turkey made into soup and your thoughts will be turning to Pantomime, we hope! Saltford Drama Club is planning a gigantic extravaganza of a Pantomime in January -Jack and the Beanstalk. Already we are
rehearsing, making huge sausages out of anything we can find, Sedan Chairs out of cardboard and Giant sized plates of spaghetti out of I know not what. The costume ladies are busy creating gowns for Dame Trott and looking for fishnet tights and thigh length boots. the musical Director is busy rehearsing the singing and dancing and the Producer is - well producing! We have had a wonderful response from our members and we have a cast of, not quite thousands, but a lot! We have a dozen or so young children who promise to be a delight. Would you like to join us? We have spare capacity in the chorus so give me a ring on 0117 983 7825 if you would like to be part of the show - an operatic voice is not essential, just the ability to "put across a song" There will be plenty of "who's behind yous" and all that is traditional. Make a note in your diary January 15/16/17118. Please also note that we are

so confident of the popularity of this production that we are putting on an extra night and a Matinee. Saltford Singers Good news from the Singers because our numbers have increased following our recent recruitment drive but we still need more. Come and join our enthusiastic group and help us to make music the village will enjoy even more. Our concert on 29th & 30th November this year will consist of a miscellany of Victoriana together with traditional Christmas music that will enhance the spirit of the occasion. Tickets will be available from all Singers during November so do make a note of the date in your diaries and we look forward to seeing you. Look out for further announcements on the various notice boards around the village. Saltford Recorded Music Society The Society will hold its first meeting for the '96/97 season on Thursday 3 October at 7 .45pm in the Somerset Room when Mr Richard Morgan will present his choice of music entitled "M-M-M". Why not come along and find our just what that means ! Annual Subscription is a mere £4.00 and visitors pay 80p per meeting. On Thursday 14 November Mrs Sheila Hufford from the Longwell Green Music Society will present her programme -"Land and Sea". Visitors and new members will be very welcome.

ACUPUNCTURE Catherine Roberts R.G.N.,lic.Ac.,M.B.Ac.A.C.
Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing based upon diagnosis and treatment of an individuals energy imbalance. It is well renowned for helping pain and to stop sro10king, but there are a wide range of conditions where it is extremely effective. For example:
Stress- Shingles- Arthritis- Back Pain -Tennis Elbow -Migraines- Menstrual Problems - (e.g. PMT, Dysmenorrhoea) - Post Menopausal Symptoms
Skin Conditions - Asthma ..... to name but a few
Treatment is based upon the insertion of fine needles into specific acupuncture points. The application of warmth to certain points is also often used. This rebalances the energy and thus harmonises the body.

SALTFORD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Clerk to the Council -Mrs M L M Freemantle, 19, Victoria Road, Saltford,
Bristol BS18 3A W Tel: 01225 400058
TRAFF1C CALMING IN SALTFORD The agents acting for the Government's highways Agency did not agree to meet with the Parish Council to discuss the traffic calming measures on the A4 main road. However, continued pressure will be put on for the installation of the second pedestrian crossing and speed camera as soon as possible. The petition for traffic calming in Norman Road and High Street has been passed on to Bath & North East Somerset Council, as well as letters from residents in Claverton Road West for action to be taken to reduce speeds. The Parish Council has asked B & NES Council for a site meeting to look at these residential roads. Grange Road and Montague Road will also be included following a request last year. D~URBANCEBYYOUTHS
It is apparent that residents are still being regularly disturbed by youths, particularly in the Norman Road/Wickhouse Close areas. The Parish Council has been looking at suggested ways of reducing this problem and will be considering ideas again at its next meeting on 1st October. Any practical ideas will be welcomed, however, as this is a very upsetting situation for many people. The parish Council and the Youth Club funded visits by the Activities Bus in September for young people aged 8 - 18. FOOTPATHS A new footpath map is now in the process of being designed, with thanks to the Parish Council's Footpath · Warden, Martin Evans. The Council is intending to organise the clearance and general upkeep of the footpaths from next year to ensure
13
that they are accessible and easy to follow, so that hopefully more Saltford residents will explore the beautiful walks around the countryside in the Parish. OVERHANGING TREES/BUSHES An on-going problem each year is trying to keep the pavements and roadsides clear from overhanging trees and foliage. It may be that you rarely walk outside your property and so don't realise how difficult it is for pedestrians to pass. Please remember that, as well as possibly creating a visibility hazard for traffic, people may be forced into the road, particularly if they have to walk side-byside (such as parents with young children or elderly people) Please check your trees and bushes! GARDEN BONFIRES Another source of frequent complaint to the Parish Council! This is a densely populated village and one bonfire affects a lot of other people. Please either compost your garden rubbish, take it to the Pixash Lane tip or get a special green sack from B & NES Council (£1 from Keynsham Town Hall) which will be collected with the normal Tuesday rubbish collection. On recycling, all households should have received a B & NES leaflet advising that the monthly recycling collection in Saltford is now on the second Monday of every month and the range of materials has been extended. FOOTNOTE BY EDITOR The SCA Newspaper and Magazine bimonthly collections continue as before, and the valuable funds raised are used to support the S.C.A. and Saltford Hall. Please keep your paper for this collection.

News Item Traffic Warden in Saltford!
On 30 August 1996 The Editor received a telephone call from a member of the Association who had just seen a Traffic Warden on duty and patrolling Bath Hill and it was thought that readers may like to know that we now have this service provided though sadly, no provision of a Community Constable for policing. A few days later, a Warden was patrolling the Chelwood Road area. The observation was made to him that there were few yellow line parking restrictions nearby that needed enforcement and this yielded the information that Wardens also check for unlicensed vehicles parked on the Public Highway or for such things as obstruction of people's driveways by irresponsible parking.
Note: Whilst this item is included as a news item on something that may not be widely appreciated in the Community, it is felt that any comments should be addressed to the Parish Council as our elected body to deal with the statutory authorities. Ed.

Saltford Photographic Club Autumn evening activities are not too far away now, and the Photographic Club has just completed its programme which starts in September. Why not come along on a Monday evening and let other people enjoy your Summer Photography and perhaps learn a few things that could help you obtain more satisfying pictures in the future? Our programme is fairly lighthearted but interesting. Some of our members have been far afield this Summer and others have been concentrated on photographing parts of Saltford that non-photographers never reach.

Floral Club which meets once a month -the 4th Tuesday in the month at 2.l5pm in Saltford Hall. We are very excited about our programme for the coming year when we shall be having top-class demonstrators each month, to entertain and instruct us, showing us five different types of attractive arrangements. You could even be one of the lucky ones to win the raffle! Practice classes are being organised alternate months, when the novice can learn the basics of flower arranging, producing a pleasing arrangement to take home at the end of the afternoon. Don't forget too, those ladies who already have some knowledge are also most welcome -after all, we all like to improve our skills. Do come along and join us for an afternoon of fun and pleasure, come and make new friends over that cup of tea .. you will "enjoy it! Meanwhile, why not make a definite date for the 28th November when we have Margaret Bayliss giving her demonstration entitled "Christmas Hospitality?" You can get to meet us and find out what goes on at Saltford Floral Club, as well as having the opportunity of buying things from our Sales Table i.e. Robins, Ribbons, Christmas Roses, Holly, Candles, Oasis etc. - all that you need to inspire your artistic talents to make your own decorations for the· Festive Season. Can we look out for you? S.S.

Saltford Young People's Club The club is always short of money and some of the youngsters are aware of this. Prior to the cricket festival I was presented with two envelopes containing sums of money to a total of £8.25. This came from the younger element of the club 8 - 12 years.

On their own initiative they had gone around the village offering a car washing service thus raising the above sum. The kids of this village come in for a lot of criticism and verbal abuse, some of it well justified, but there are some good kids around and I believe they should be recognised. At least it shows at long last S. Y.P.C. is having some effect. Bob Burke, Chairman. 01225 873830
