ThoughtsfromtheRev’dJohnTaylor
No-one likes to be judged. To be judged by others makes us feelvulnerable and uncomfortable. CriFcism can be both posiFve andnegaFve.ItcanbeconstrucFvewhenintendedforgood,asasFmulustoimprovement.HoweveritcantooofenbenegaFveanddestrucFve,andintendedtohurt.
A certainMr Davidson, Housemaster at Harrowwrote the followingreportonapupil, possiblyintendedtoprovokeaposiFvereacFon.
‘He is forgehul, careless, unpunctual, irregular in every way. If he isunabletoconquerhisslovenliness, hewillnevermakeasuccess.’
Thatreportwaswri^enforoneWinstonChurchill!Itisofcourseeasytoput labels onothers, to pigeon-hole them.Having ‘summed themup’wecanthendismissthem. Wecanalsostereotypepeople,whichcanthenblindustothewholeperson.
ThereisastoryabouttheGreekphilosopherSocrateswho,onedayashewassikngbytheroadsidewasapproachedbyatravellerheadingtowardsAthens.Thetravelleraskedhim, ‘Whatsortofpeople live inAthens?’
Socratesaskedhim,‘Whatsortofpeopleliveinyourtown?
‘Awful,’saidtheother.‘Theyarelyinglayabouts.’
TowhichSocrates replied, ’I’msorry to tellyouthatyouwillfindthepeopleofAthenstobejustthesame.’
Shortly aferwards another traveller came by, who asked the samequesFon.‘WhataretheAthenianslike?’
AgainSocratesasked,‘Whatsortofpeopleliveinyourtown?’
‘Kind,friendly,generoustoo,’cametheanswer.
Socratessmiledandsaid,‘IampleasedtotellyouthatyouwillfindthepeopleofAthenstobejustthesame.’
SomeFmeswe project on to otherswhatwe don’t like in ourselves.I’msurewe’reallfamiliarwiththeexpression‘thepotcallingtheke^leblack’.Anexpressionthatcomes,itseems,fromthemedievalkitchenwherethecast-ironpotthatisusedforcookingoverthefirebecomesblackwithsoot. Oneday, whenit looksattheshinypolishedcopperke^le, it sees its ownblackness in the reflecFon and calls the ke^leblack.Itisblindtoitsownimage.
This iswhat Jesus condemns in his teaching. Using exaggeraFon tomakehispoint,hesayswearesokeentolookforthespeckofdirtinourneighbour’seyewefailtoseetheloginourown.Sowhatarewetodo?PerhapsweshouldnotethesewordsofJesus.
‘Donot judgeoryoutoowillbe judged.For in thesamewayasyoujudgeothers,youwillbejudged.’
AndinGod’skingdom,howwouldwewishtobejudged?
Withbestwishes
John
