New Times for K-2 School - Trial to start next Week
A reminder that the K-2 classes will commence next Monday.
As we prepare for the new construction period, it is hoped that
our younger students will have more time and space to leave
the school in an orderly and safe fashion.
Details are as follows:
TRIAL TIMES FROM MONDAY 27th AUGUST 2018:
K, 1, 2 9:00am to 3:00pm NEW TIMES
Years 3, 4, 5, 6 9:10am to 3:10pm SAME TIMES
Trial Morning Procedures:
8:40am - Supervision commences for all students
9:00am - Infants class to commence - Students line up in class
lines
9:10am - Primary classes commence - Morning Assembly
Trial Afternoon Procedures:
3:00pm – Infants finishing time - Students can be collected by
parents OR
K-2 students who are not directly collected by parents are
expected to make their way to the Infants COLA. If they are
walking with older siblings or neighbours, catching a bus or
attending OOSH they will assemble under the infants COLA.
Teachers will supervise bus, OOSH and walking lines to ensure
no children miss their bus, OOSH supervisor or older siblings.
Any parents or carers who have further questions or need
clarification about the trial can see Mr Brown, Mrs Ross (or Mrs
Blair) or Mrs Dyall.
Thank you to everyone for being prepared to trial this new
timetable. Years 3-6 organisation stays the same.
School Facebook Page
Our school Facebook page now has over 2300 followers! This
makes us one of the biggest school Facebook pages in the
region! We try to put as many news items and activities as
possible onto our page, but our School Newsletter remains the
first source of information to parents.
Parents who have questions about school policies, changes
and events are advised that the Facebook page is not
monitored on a regular basis and they should not rely on a
response. Parents are encouraged to call the office on
49325900 or make an appointment with the school executive if
they would like to raise ideas or query changes to school
policies and procedures.
Stranger Danger
All parents are reminded to ensure adequate supervision to and
from school. Our school and others in the region have issued
alerts recently of potential strangers in our community
approaching students on the way to and from school. Whilst
our community is a very safe one overall, it is important our
children are educated on the ways that they can be safe if they
feel uncomfortable or are approached by unknown people.
Canteen Changes
Last week we said farewell to Di Botfield, who has now finished
as our canteen manager. The staff and students at the school
will miss Di’s friendly face, and especially the sweet chilli
scrolls! We wish Mrs Botfield all the best for the future.
The P&C run the school canteen and will advertise the Canteen
Manager position shortly. Although the canteen does employ
some staff members, the canteen relies heavily on volunteers
each day to make the canteen viable. Some menu items may
not be available over the coming weeks as we transition to a
new Canteen Supervisor and menu.
Webbie Wonderland
Students will enjoy a range of activities this week as part of the
“Webbie Wonderland” reward. Students who have not received
a behaviour referral for the first five weeks of this term will be
eligible to attend.
Jump Rope for Heart
Tomorrow (Tuesday) we will have the launch for Jump Rope for
Heart, where our students will get to watch a 20-minute
demonstration of some tricks.
Newcastle Permanent Mathematics Competition
All students in Years 5 and 6 will sit the Newcastle Permanent
Mathematics Competition this Wednesday. Good luck to all
students.
Graffiti Art Project
Some of our primary students will work with Compass Housing
over the coming weeks to create a public art installation in the
Rutherford area. Students will work with the artist and other
local schools. We look forward to seeing their creative work!
Father’s Day Breakfast
A warm welcome is extended to all fathers and male carers
who may like to come along to our Father’s Day Breakfast for
2018. Activities and breakfast will start at 8:00am on Friday
31st August 2018.
Father’s Day Stall
The P&C Father’s Day stall will be held on Thursday 30th
August 2018. All gifts will cost $6 and can be prepaid on
Flexischools. A list will be kept at the stall of all students who
have prepaid, and will be marked off when their shopping is
completed.
Students will visit the stall with their class. Please be sure to
send the correct money if you do not prepay, and to bring a
plastic bag to carry dad’s gifts in.
Any left over items will be on sale at the Father’s Day breakfast.
Staffing
Mrs Ross (Deputy Principal Infants) is currently on leave as she
recovers from a hand operation. Mrs Corry Blair will relieve as
Deputy Principal during Mrs Ross’ absence.
Mrs Evans will take long service leave from this Friday to
Tuesday, and for the first two weeks of Term 4. Mr Taylor will
relieve on 5/6E.
Mrs Spalding will be on leave from this Wednesday for a week
and will be replaced by Mrs Kate Jones, Miss Hayley Donnan
and Mrs Gagan Rakhra.
Miss Collins will be on leave for the week beginning Monday
3rd September and will be replaced by Mrs Jessica Smith.
Congratulations Miss Bernardine
Miss Lara Bernardine, Beau and Levi welcomed a baby boy
into the family recently. We are pleased to hear that mum and
bub are doing well and are now at home. Congratulations to
you all!
Breaking the Silence Training
Some of our staff will undertake training in the ‘Breaking the
Silence’ initiative. The training examines ways schools can
support students and families who may experience Domestic
Violence, particularly towards women.
Schools and communities play an important role if we are to
eliminate any form of violence.
NAPLAN Readiness Test Spelling
Students in Years 3 and 5 will sit a NAPLAN-style test using
computer technology in Week 7. This test aims to trial the
school’s computer software and hardware. Students do not
need to prepare for the test and the school does not receive
any individual student results. The 2018 NAPLAN results from
Term 2 should be issued soon by the Department of Education.
Students will bring home the report as soon as the school
receives them.
Spelling Bee Zone Final
Good luck to our students who will represent our school at the
Zone finals of the 2018 Premier’s Spelling Bee to be held at
Greta Public school on Thursday 6th September. Our super
spellers are:
Stage 2: Cody Lewis and William Lewis
Stage 3: Bailey Marquet and Shreyash Karajager
Aerobics Competition
Our famous “Pink Jets” will travel to the Gold Coast this week
as they prepare for the “Schoolaerobics” National
Championships. Ms Ledwos and the girls have been practicing
regularly since taking out the State Championships, and we
wish them all the best. Thank you to our major sponsors for all
their ongoing support:

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE
The Premier’s Reading Challenge closes on Friday 31st August.
If you have been working towards the required number of books (K-2
must read 30 books, and 3-6 must read 20 books), its time to get
your forms completed.
Completed forms need to be given to Mrs Beesley in the Library as
soon as possible so they can be validated.
Congratulations to those students who have already finished the
challenge!!
Mrs Beesley, Teacher Librarian
School Disco
The P&C will host a school disco in the hall on Friday 7th
September. The theme for this disco is “Glow/Fluro”.
Cost is just $2 entry fee. All students must be accompanied to
and from the school by an adult.
Times:
K-2: 5:00pm to 6:15pm
Years 3-6: 6:30pm to 8:00pm
Canteen will be open for a BBQ sausage sizzle as well as
drinks, lollies, chocolate and chips!
The P&C would appreciate any parents who can stay and help
supervise children or serve in the canteen. Any assistance is
appreciated.
The SRC will be selling Glow Products on the night!
Help us raise funds for new playground equipment and sporting
jerseys for Rutherford Public School!
Parking Rangers
Parents and carers are advised that the Maitland Council
Rangers have been patrolling the school parking restrictions,
and have issued quite a number of fines to motorists in recent
weeks. The school has no control over the restrictions, and all
parking zones are determined by the council’s traffic control
committee.
Parents are encouraged to leave enough time to find a park
before and after school to avoid a heavy fine. There is NO
excuse for parking in a NO PARKING zone!
Scooter Track
Students in Years 3 to 6 enjoyed a pop-up scooter track last
Friday. Students are permitted to ride their scooters on the
track each Friday over the next few weeks.
Students MUST wear a helmet if they choose to participate.
We are looking at designing a track for the infants children
soon!
Super Choirs!
Congratulations to the Primary and Infants Choirs who
competed at the Abermain Eisteddfod last week. Both choirs
performed to an extremely high standard. The Infants choir
took out first place in their division and the Primary choir place
second in the Primary section. Congratulations to Mrs Thomas
and Miss Burns for all their preparation with the children.
Infants Choir
On Tuesday, the Infants choir travelled to Mt View High School
to compete in the 101st Abermain Eisteddfod. The 35 students
had a wonderful morning! They looked and sounded amazing,
and were rewarded with a first place for their efforts! They all
loved being on stage and cannot wait for their next opportunity
to perform.
I feel very lucky to be able to share such a wonderful
experience with our students. Congratulations!

routines. Parents will then attend an information session in the hall whilst students are visiting classrooms.

Important Dates for your diary
Class of the Week - KE
KE have had a busy start to Term 3.
We enjoyed looking after our chickens for two weeks, and we were very sad to see them go. We enjoyed writing about them,
feeding them and learning about their life cycle. We will continue to learn about farm life and about different animals that live
on farms.
In maths we have been busy learning about equal groups. We have had fun using concrete materials to make equal groups
with partners and using different materials to create artworks to display in our classroom.
Seesaw
Please make sure you are logged onto Seesaw. This is a fantastic way for teachers to communicate important information and
keep you involved in your child’s education. If you do not have a note for Seesaw, please ask your child’s classroom teacher.

water from the well and playing old fashioned games.
Everyone had a lovely time!

Dates for your Diary
Students from 1B, 1J, 2Z and 2J have been working hard for the past term on a project called "Trash or Treasure" to explore
the impact of rubbish on our environment. We have particularly been looking at ways to reduce, reuse and recycle items that
would normally be thrown out.
We would love to see you at our expo on Friday 7th September from 10:00am until 2:00pm, where we will display some of our
amazing work in the school hall. We will be ready to answer your questions and to share the knowledge we have gained
through this unit of work.

Whole of Stage 2 Assembly
Last week we held our first whole stage assembly, and we had a lot of awards to hand out. Well done to all the children who
received an award at the assembly, and congratulations to 4D on running our first whole stage assembly.
Webbie Wonderland
Webbie Wonderland will take place on Friday during the middle session. All students
who have not received a form during the first five weeks of this term will be able to
choose an activity to participate in. This is to celebrate students following the PBL core
values. Thank you to all the teachers for selecting some fun and exciting activities for
the students to enjoy.
Looking back on last week with 3BR
Mr Gillard and Mrs Vickers have been teaching the recorder and preparing for an
assembly performance in Week 8. The children are sounding very good, especially
after only having two lessons so far.
3BR have been researching the sun, moon and Earth and are busy preparing
PowerPoints to share with the class. Gracie presented one she made at home for
news last week.
The children also enjoyed the chickens visiting the class before they left the
kindergarten rooms for their forever homes.

ice blocks, drinks, homemade muffins/pikelets and other snacks at break times.
Log onto www.flexischools.com.au or click on the flexischools picture below to login or set up your account.
