We are delighted to announce the official opening of the new Home Economics Kitchen at Rutherford Technology High School. The new kitchen replaces the previous kitchen that had not been updated since the school was opened in 1985. The kitchen was formally opened by Robyn Parker MP on Wednesday 25 July 2012 where guests saw the new kitchen facilities and enjoyed morning tea provided by students. The new kitchen is named “The Bruce Read Kitchen” in honour of popular Home Economics Teacher Bruce Read (pictured above with Robyn Parker and students cutting the cake) who worked for several years in the old kitchen under challenging conditions. Bruce retired at the end of Term 2 just as the new kitchen was being installed. He is no longer at the school to enjoy the new facilities but students and staff were keen for the new kitchen to bear his name. Bruce Read was a guest of honour at the official opening. Principal Michael Whiting says “We are thrilled that the school has a new kitchen that will allow our students to develop their skills in a modern kitchen environment”. “Our thanks go to Robyn Parker MP who was instrumental in lobbying for funding to provide this wonderful new resource for the school”.

The theme is “Public Schools NSW - Creating the future”. It is an opportunity for public schools to showcase the great things happening in them. We will celebrate with an Open Day on Tuesday 31 July from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. This will be followed at 6:30 pm by the Rutherford Learning Community Education week Award Evening. Teachers, non-teaching staff, students and community members from Branxton Public, Greta Public, Lochinvar Public, Gillieston Public, Telarah Public, Rutherford Public and Rutherford Technology High will be recognised for their outstanding contributions. Subject Selections A subject selections evening will be held on Tuesday 7th August for Year 8 choosing electives for year 9 in 2013 and for Year 10 choosing subjects for year 11. The Year 8 part of the evening begins at 5.30pm while the Year 10 begins at 6.30pm Opening of new Home Economics Kitchen Member for Maitland, Robyn Parker MP, opened our new kitchen on Wednesday 25 July. The $400,000 upgrade has been greatly appreciated. The kitchen has been named the “Bruce Read Kitchen” in honour of retired Home Economics teacher Bruce Read. Parent/Teacher Interviews Parent/teacher meetings were held on Tuesday 24 July utilising our new on-line booking system. There were many positive comments about the new approach. Please provide any feedback on how the system can be improved. Reports All reports for semester one should have gone home. If you have not received a report for your child please contact the school on 4932 5999. Greg Archbold - Deputy Principal

It is most important that students READ their assessment schedule and allow their parents access to it. One student turned up 5 minutes after his exam finished because he thought that he did not have an exam on that day. Clearly, there were no grounds for an appeal. The weeks are now counting down and there is much to do – attend lessons, complete homework and study. Many students have been in this position before and they have done well by maintaining the effort. There are fees to be paid, lockers to be paid for, decisions to be made about activities in the last week and of course, the Formal. I ask the students to put aside personal differences and work together to ensure a successful and memorable completion to 13 years of schooling. Kevin McMullen - Year 12 Adviser

EDUCATION WEEK OPEN DAY 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM TUESDAY, 31 JULY 2012 Rutherford Technology High School is throwing open its doors to the public on Tuesday 3 August 2012 from 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm with an open invitation that says “We are very proud of our school and want to show it off to you ….. “ Every faculty will be offering a “hands-on” activity designed to give visitors a real taste of what happens in the classrooms of today. Visitors to the school will be able to visit the School Farm, sample Japanese food, try their hand at graphic animation, experience the way that electronic Smartboards have transformed classrooms throughout the school, and see how the Metal and Woodwork workshops compare with industry. Principal Michael Whiting says “We are always happy to welcome visitors into the school”. “Staff and students will be on hand to take visitors on a tour of the school, with interactive displays a feature of the day”.

A very busy time for Year 10 is upon us - busy, and for some, stressful. It is the time of the year where students need to seriously consider what they are going to be doing next year. Will they find an apprenticeship, traineeship or full time work? Will they come back to school as a senior student? If coming back to school is the decision, then what type of pathway will they undertake? Will they select 12 units made up of Board endorsed subjects or a combination of TAFE and Board subjects? Or Board subjects and a VET course? Over the next few weeks students, through PBL, Careers, an upcoming discussions with older peers and staff will ultimately come to their decision. Parents are urged to keep talking with their children to ensure all the correct decisions are made which will provide the best outcome for all students. Many students received report cards which positively reflect their approach to learning - report cards which will assist in meeting resume and job application requirements. Some students found their report cards need attention and with assistance have the ability to ensure the yearly reports reflect real application and a determination to do well in all areas. Our Beacon Student Ambassadors have been busy representing Year 10 and our school in a number of areas in the community. The maturity and responsibility which these students are showing is commendable and the respect they are obtaining from their peers is very good to see. Our PBL assembly went well. The number of students recognised for their efforts across the school was fabulous to see. Thank you Brittany Lucas for the dance - it was a marvellous piece and your year group are very proud of your talent and your ability to dance so well. Work Experience is a valuable tool for Year 10 to use to assist with their vision of where they want to be in the future. Thank you to the many Year 10 students who are endeavouring to participate in this program which is open to everyone in the year group. Karen McLeod - Year Adviser

YEAR 10 REPORT

Every day, young Australians are subjected to thousands of messages seeking to influence the way they think and act. On Tuesday 7th August all students will attend a presentation by ‘Motivational Media’ which will address the area of risk-taking within today’s society. The 40 minute high impact cinematic presentation makes use of three large screens which produce an image thirteen metres wide. This is combined with amplified sound, current popu-lar music and inspirational stories. The program aims to challenge and inspire young people to develop strategies that will enable them to reach their full potential and highlights the importance of self-esteem, wise decision making, goal setting and friendship choices. Students in Years 7 – 10 will have the opportunity to discuss issues raised by the presentation with their year ad-visers in PBL lessons the following fortnight. Rutherford Technology High School has introduced a system of notifying a student’s daily absence with an SMS message sent directly to the parent / caregiver’s mobile phone. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

In what circumstances will an SMS be forwarded to a parent / carer? You will receive an SMS if:

Your child is not in attendance at school and you have not phoned to the front office to notify the school of your child’s absence Who will receive the SMS? The system will send a message to the mother’s mobile telephone first. If there is no mobile number recorded for the mother, the system will send a message to the father’s mobile number. If you wish to change this arrangement you should contact the school on 4932 5999. At what time of day will the SMS be sent? After morning administration and relevant data has been entered into the system. We will be doing our best to check for any discrepancies – approximately 12:15 pm. How will the notification work? The SMS text message you will receive will be similar to this: Dear MR & MRS JONES, JESSICA was absent today, 25/07/12. Please SMS a reply to this number or contact us on 49 325 999 to explain this absence. Please note the sending number for the SMS. You may wish to add this number to your mobile phone’s address book under the title RTHS Absence. Please be aware that this mobile telephone number will only take written text messages NOT voice messages. What if I don’t own a mobile telephone? You will be unable to be contacted via SMS. We also have an email option or you will receive a normal attendance letter in the mail. What if I change my mobile phone number? The success of the system requires accurate records of mobile phone numbers. If you change your number or you think that the school does not have your correct mobile number, you can call the front office. What happens if I get an SMS about my daughter’s absence but believe they are at school? When this happens you should phone the front office to determine if our record of absence is incorrect. Obviously, if your child is not at school when you believe he/she should be there is cause for concern. For your child's safety it is vital to ascertain his/her whereabouts. What if I receive this message and I am aware that my daughter is not at school? As is the normal procedure, as outlined in the Student Attendance in Government Schools-Procedures, parents are required to provide an explanation of any student absence. You may choose to do this by: phoning the front office, providing your child with a written explanation when he/she returns to school or by replying to the SMS. Will the SMS system be used for any other purpose? Possibly. In this era of technology a number of schools are using the system to communicate to parents reminders such as: Parent Meetings, Parent / Teacher Interviews. At this stage it will be used only for the purpose of notifying parents regarding student absences. Based on parental feedback, we will assess other possibilities. If you have any concerns or questions about this system please contact: Kylie Fabri - Head Teacher Student Welfare at the school on 4932 5999

SENIOR STUDY Year 12 students have just completed trial exams and teachers are in the process of marking exam papers. Students should start to receive their exam results this week and should use this information to identify their strengths and weaknesses. If as parents you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress please do not hesitate to contact the school. Year 12 have 8 weeks of classes before they finish school at the end of this term, with the first HSC exam beginning on Monday 15th October. (Term 4 Week 2) The next 8 weeks will be a very busy time for Year 12 students as they complete final assessment tasks and finish covering content for each of their subjects. This term it is extremely important that students attend school regularly and commit adequate time at home to keeping up with their school work. With trial exams completed it is not the time to slacken off, but rather it is time for students to start getting ready for HSC exams by preparing a study/revision program. Even though exams do not begin until Term 4, early preparation will help to reduce stress and anxiety and help students to achieve the best results possible. Any students who need help to prepare a HSC study timetable are encouraged to discuss this with Ms Turner in the Senior Study. Congratulations to those students who came into school during the recent school holidays to work on practical projects and complete revision for their trial exams. Thank you to the Year 12 teachers who made themselves available during the holidays to assist our students. Also thank you to Mr McMullen who has organised a Year 12 excursion to Luna Park to give students a chance to relax after a busy few weeks. The 2013 UAC (Universities Admission Centre) Guides have arrived in the school and will be handed out to students during Week 3. This guide is designed to help students who are considering university courses for 2013 and outlines general information, application procedures and closing dates for courses offered by UA C’s participating institutions. Any students who need assistance with post school career options are encouraged to make an appointment to see the school’s Careers Adviser Mrs Elliot. Kris Turner - Senior Study Co-ordinator

Hello to the community of Rutherford Technology High School. My name is Mr. Dale Mate and I am a recent addition to the ICT Faculty. I have been a teacher of the Computing disciplines for nearly seven years now and have transferred back into my home region of Maitland. I have been teaching at Walgett Community College High School, at the junction of the Namoi and Barwon Rivers for over six years; within the Bourke Group of Schools – Western NSW. I recognise the importance of the practical application of the Information Technology (IT) Vocational Education (VET) course; it was this and other computing courses that took me to my University educational studies. I believe every student deserves the opportunity of practical study

opportunities that allow students to gain the experience and skills necessary for lifelong learning. Students embarking on the Information Technology course in 2013 will be provided the opportunity of obtaining a nationally recognised Vocational Qualification for employment, with recognition toward further education in the Information and Communications Technology industry. Knowledge and skills acquired in this course are directly transferable to most industries; with specialist opportunity toward the occupations of ICT, including technical support officer, desktop publisher, computer programmer, software designer / developer, website developer, systems analyst and network management. Students undertaking this line of study have the opportunity to become effective ICT users, employees and / or employers. Dale Mate - ICT Teacher

WOOLWORTHS - EARN & LEARN PROGRAM

Selected students at Rutherford Technology High School took part in a kidney health study of which the results have been published in the ARDAC (Antecedents of Renal Disease in Aboriginal Children) newsletter. This information may be accessed at the ARDAC website: www.ardac.org.au

Last year, with support from our students and their families, Rutherford Technology High school earned over $1,000 through the Coles Sports for Schools Program. With this money we purchased equipment for the school gym, increasing the number of students able to participate in cardio lessons throughout our sports programs.

Rutherford Technology High has again registered in this program in 2012. A collection box is located in the PE staffroom and we would gladly accept your support in collecting and returning to us any vouchers you may obtain through your regular shopping. It will assist us in resourcing our students with additional equipment. Thank you.

Thank You to everyone who has been sending in the Woolies Earn & Learn stickers for the school. The closing date for the Earn & Learn Program has been extended to Friday 10th August so keep saving those stickers and send them into the school. As a reminder – for every $10 spent at Woolworths you will receive a sticker. Please keep these stickers and place them onto the Sticker Card that has been given to every student at the school. Additional sticker cards can be obtained from the school or from Woolworths stores. Completed sticker cards should be sent to the school and placed in the large green box by the Student counter at the Front Office. The more stickers we receive, the more items we can buy for the school. This is an excellent way for the school to obtain valuable resources for the school – please help us to help provide additional resources to support your child’s learning.

A reminder that the Young Endeavour, Australia’s national sail training ship, is now accepting applications for youth to join eleven day voyages departing between January and June 2013.
