Semester 1 Reports

School reports will go home next week (Week 10) to all parents

and carers. The Semester 1 reports aim to give parents more

information about how their child is progressing against the

NSW syllabus standards. Please take the time to read and

discuss the report with your child. Class teachers are available

for interviews at any time throughout the year to clarify any

concerns or questions. Please contact the school office to

make an appointment with your class teacher.

Duplicate School Reports - Non Residential Parents

The school is happy to provide duplicate reports for parents

who may require additional copies. Due to the number of

reports we normally mail out to non-residential parents that are

returned to the school as ‘undeliverable’, no reports will be

mailed until they are requested.

Families are asked to contact the school to request a

second report if required. Please note that the school MUST

comply with any current court orders restricting or allowing

information to particular person/s. The office will send home

copies of the reports by mail, or they can be collected from the

front office.

Morning Supervision

A reminder that there is NO supervision at the school before

8:40am. Children who arrive before 8:40am MUST sit in the

primary quad until the play bell goes. We request that parents

and carers ensure adequate supervision before school

commences.

Building Works

We have had numerous contractors in last week, looking over

the site so they may quote for the upcoming construction.

During the build, there will be significant disruptions to

normal school routines. As a school community, students,

teachers and parents/carers, we will need to work together to

ensure student learning is not interrupted. It is anticipated that

the hall, canteen and community room will be demolished early

in the construction phase. A temporary canteen will need to be

brought onsite. Without a hall, the school will not be able to

hold assemblies as usual. The library will become a very

important piece of real estate during the next 18 months!

It will also be very important to follow all construction site

restrictions. Although we may experience some ‘growing

pains’, the end result will be magnificent. More updates to

follow in Term 3.

Public Speaking

Multicultural Public Speaking Competition

Rutherford Public School hosted the Local Area Finals of the

Premier’s Multicultural Public Speaking Finals this week, on

Monday 25th June 2018.

Students from local public schools went head-to-head in the

prepared and impromptu speeches.

Congratulations to Darcy Spalding of Stage 3, who will now go

on to compete at the Regional Finals in August in Term 3.

Stage 2 Finalist Highly Commended

Mia Layzell - Dungog Harry Brown - Maitland East

Jemma Phan - Singleton Heights

Stage 3 Finalist Highly Commended

Darcy Spalding - Rutherford Eliza Mackenzie - Singleton Heights

Hallie Croucher - Scone

School Public Speaking Finals

Good luck to the students who have been selected to represent

their class this week in the Stage Public Speaking Finals.

Students will present their speeches for the opportunity to

represent the school in the Zone Public Speaking Finals in

Term 3.

Parents and community members are most welcome to come

along and enjoy hearing the entertaining speeches!

Week 10

Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6) Monday 2nd July 9:30am

Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten) Wednesday 4th July 9:30am

Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) Wednesday 4th July 10:30am

Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) Thursday 5th July 9:30am

Bus Travel

We have had to speak to a small number of children about

ongoing behaviour to and from school whilst travelling on the

bus. The bus company has also asked the school to remind

parents and students that ALL students should have their opal

card with them at all times. Numbers on the buses are largely

tracked by the Opal Card system.

Overcrowding occurs when students

continually travel on the bus without a

card. It is hard for the bus company to

justify additional services if the numbers

are not accurate.

Please ensure your child has a green

or blue opal card.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

Class Celebrations: Week 10

Rutherford Public School seeks to promote the wellbeing of

each student. At the end of each term, we ask students to

reflect upon their learning and how they have demonstrated the

PBL values. Students may receive the “PBL Badge” if their

behaviour and work standards reflect the values. Some

students have already received their badge in Term 1, and

more students will receive their badge this term.

Class celebrations will be held next week and students who are

to receive their badge will bring home a note inviting parents to

come along to the class. Most class celebrations will be held

on Wednesday afternoon, 27th June 2018 from 2:30pm. A

small number of classes have needed to change their time,

please check individual class notes.

Congratulations to all students.

PBL Focus of the Week

Every week, students take part in a PBL (Positive Behaviour for

Learning) lesson. We discuss our core values and how they

can help us to make our school a safe and happy school in

which to work and play.

Topics covered recently include:

Week 8: How can we be safe travelling to and from school?

Students discussed different ways of staying safe as a

passenger, a pedestrian and a cyclist.

Week 9: We leave sticks and stones on the ground!

Students will be talking about how to make good choices in the

playground to ensure the safety of everyone.

Week 10: We can show our PBL values at home and in the

community!

Classes will discuss our core values and how they can be used

not just at school, but at home and on holidays too!

Anti-Bullying Policy

Our school is currently updating our anti-bullying policy. We

welcome any feedback or suggestions in ways we can better

support our students so conflict is minimised and all students

can come to school feeling safe and valued. Mr Brown

(Principal) is available to meet with parents, or alternatively

parents can email their ideas to:

[email protected]

Staffing

It is with some sadness we announce that Mrs Kate Slaven will

leave us at the end of this term. Mrs Slaven has been at the

school for the last 5 years, many of which have been in the role

of relieving Assistant Principal. Mrs Slaven has worked

tirelessly for our students and supported many teachers in their

work. She was instrumental in establishing the “Little Dragons”

program, and she will be missed by many as she takes up her

new role as Assistant Principal at Telarah Public School in

Term 3. Mrs Slaven will still be seen around the school, as a

parent to Livia and Cooper!

In Term 3 we will also welcome some new staff to the teaching

team. Mrs Alison John and Ms Jasmine Jackson have been

appointed as permanent teachers to the school. Both teachers

are looking forward to meeting the students, staff and parents.

Some changes may be necessary to classes. Parents of

classes effected will be notified of these changes as soon as

planning has been finalised.

The Deputy Principal position, left vacant by Mr Beaven’s

promotion last term, has now been finalised through the merit

selection process. Mrs Zoe Dyall has been appointed to the

position (pending appeal period). It is anticipated that Mrs Dyall

will start in the position officially in Term 3.

TERM 3 Dates

Term 3 is shaping up to be just as busy as the first two! Some

important dates for your calendar include:

Congratulations Pink Jets!

State Champions!

The Pink Jets legend lives on this year as the 2018 team swept

all other teams aside to win their division in the School Aerobics

competition last weekend in Sutherland. The team will now

compete at the National Championships at the Gold Coast in

August, under the careful guidance of super coach Ms Ledwos.

This win is a great reward for the many hours of training and

dedication the team has shown throughout the year.

Many thanks to our sponsors: MSP Photography and Club

Maitland City.

Good luck to the Pink Jets in August!

Futsal Success

Congratulations to Nate Robson (Year 4) who has been

selected to play in the Northern NSW Futsal Team at the 2018

National Futsal titles in October. Nate will travel to Queensland

as part of the team. Congratulations to Nate and all the best for

the upcoming meet!

ICAS TESTS

English Tuesday 31 July 2018

Mathematics Tuesday 14 August 2018

Students who have paid to sit the UNSW ICAS tests will need

to be at school by 8:00am each morning. The tests will be

administered before school to avoid any interruptions to school

routines and learning.

All students who sit the morning tests are entitled to free toast

from the breakfast club!

Entries for these tests are closed and no late entries can be

accepted.

Good luck to the students sitting these tests!

NAIDOC 2018

Our NAIDOC assembly will take place on Monday 2 July at

12:30pm. We would love for the community and our families to

attend. There will be a Smoking Ceremony, a performance

from our Baa Waa Girls and a whole school song. We hope to

see you there.

Supporting this year’s NAIDOC theme of ‘Because of You, We

Can’, we are hosting an afternoon tea in our hall, with craft

activities available for parents, carers and community members.

To conclude our NAIDOC celebrations, on Friday 6th July

students may come to school dressed in red, yellow and black.

Alternatively students must come to school in their regular

sports/school uniform as this is not a mufti day. There is no

donation required for being out of uniform on this day.

Lockdown Drill

Lockdown drill last Thursday was successful. Children

responded very quickly and they were safely locked down in

classrooms within 2 minutes. The drill was conducted to test

our readiness for a real emergency.

OC Tutoring

Tutoring for Year 4 students, who have applied to do the

Opportunity Class test on Wednesday 1st August commenced

BAND PERSON OF THE WEEK:

This week we congratulate:

Linu Memadeema

as Band Person of the Week for always trying his best in the

Rutherford Public School Concert Band. Well done Linu!

If your child is interested in joining the band and having instrumental tuition at school, please see the front office for an information pack. At the end of this term the school band will be performing at Rutherford Opal Aged Care Centre. This

performance will take place on Wednesday 4th July at 10:00am.

After this, the band will perform two concerts in the library at 12:20pm and 1:00pm. Parents and carers are invited to join us

for one of these concerts.

This week in the K-2 Music Program KL, KA and 1H had their first music lesson focusing on singing, finding the beat and playing claves. Students also had the opportunity to learn

about the violin and even had a turn at playing one.

Over the next few weeks students can look forward to learning

more about the instruments of the orchestra.

Bubble and Supa Squirt Water Saving Show

K-2 had a fabulous time at the Hunter Water Bubble and Supa

Squirt Water Saving show on Tuesday.

This interactive show had our students on the edge of their

seats as Bubble and Supa Squirt showed off their magic skills

and circus talents.

Infants learnt about the water cycle, catchment areas and 8

ways to save water at home:

1. When you have a shower, keep it short

2. When you have a bath, keep it shallow and share it

3. When you brush your teeth, turn off the tap

4. When you find a leak or drip, get it fixed or tell an adult

5. When you use the loo, think one or two

6. Water the roots and not the leaves of plants

7. When you clean the path, use a broom

8. When you wash the car, use a bucket on the lawn

Thank you Hunter Water and Ship o' Fools for delivering such a

fantastic and entertaining show to our infants students.

Little Dragons News:

Little Dragons are beginning to adapt to the routines and structures of school. Over the last few weeks we have started to

incorporate group activities which include craft, scissor skills, and playdough and writing activities. Little Dragons have now

started saying ‘Goodbye’ to parents/carers at the door to prepare them for ‘Big School’.

A reminder for Parents: Please do not park in the School Staff car park - This car park is for staff and disabled students and

drivers only. Please park on the street and walk through the main gate, and not through our busy car park.

NAIDOC Week (Week 10): Little Dragons are asked to wear NAIDOC Colours in Week 10 (Thursday 5th July - red, black or

yellow) to celebrate NAIDOC Week.

Please ensure you’re logged onto Seesaw to keep up to date with photos and resources to support your child’s learning

journey to big school. If you do not have a note please see one of the Little Dragons teachers.

We are now taking enrolments for this years ‘Little Dragons’ transition/

orientation program for Term 3. Weeks 6-10 enrolments for this term have

now closed.

Please ensure you have returned all necessary paperwork (student profile and

enrolment forms). We also encourage that you advise us of any medical

information that could be important to your child’s participation in the program.

Term 2 feedback will be ready for parents at the start of Term 3. This

feedback is for children who started the program in Term 2. It gives parents an

insight on how their child is developing throughout the program. All students

who participate consistently in the Little Dragons program will receive

feedback in Term 4 also.

Little Dragons who are registered are now on Flexischools. This means you

can order their Father’s day gift via Flexi if you do not wish to send money.

Little Dragons (who are registered) can also pay for our P&C fundraisers.

1B have been busy inventing prototypes of new technology by using recycled materials. We held an expo to showcase our

inventions for other Year 1 students to view.

Hunter Water's Bubbles and Supa Squirt Water Saving Show

Students from Kindergarten to Year 2 were thoroughly entertained when the Hunter Water's Bubbles and Supa Squirt Water

Saving Show came to Rutherford Public School on Tuesday 19th June. This hilarious show taught students about the water

cycle, water wise rules and the health benefits of drinking water. A huge thank you to Hunter Water for providing this resource

free of charge.

Soccer

Both the boys and girls teams have played 2 hard fought matches since the last newsletter. The first games played

were against Telarah, with both teams having convincing wins. The boys won 4-2 and the girls 6-0. AJ Thomas and

Conan Smith were solid in defence and laid a great platform from which the boys team could attack. Rutherford’s

dynamic trio of strikers which included Harry Swan, Noah Wadwell and Jackson Carrol did the rest and converted their

chances. The girls were strong all round, hence the scoreline, with Mirabella Packham strong in the goals not allowing

anything in that was able to get past the rest of our team. With these wins it meant they both played in round 2 of the

competition, with both games against Bolwarra. First up were the girls who started off our games with a convincing 4-2

win, but unfortunately the Bolwarra boys were a bit stronger than us this year. The score was tight at 1-1 until the final

10 minutes when the Bolwarra boys were able to take the game away. These results mean the boys have

unfortunately finished their campaign this year, but the girls still continue with their next game to be against Ashtonfield.

We are hoping to get on the paddock this Thursday.

Rugby League

Our Rugby League representation continues this week with the girls competing in the Rebecca Young Cup this

Wednesday. They have been training hard and I am sure they will do us proud. Results will be published in the next

newsletter.

Softball

Sebastian Richard and Jasmine Antoni were selected from our school teams to trial for the Hunter Region PSSA

teams. Sebastian was up against 60 other students who trialled for the boys team with only 12 positions up for grabs,

while Jasmine had to compete against 20 other girls. Unfortunately neither were able to make the teams, but both

performed well on the day, representing both themselves and the school with distinction.

The girls team will be playing their gala day on 5th July. The rain caused a postponement to the gala day earlier this

month, so hopefully it can stay away long enough so that we can get our games in before the holidays.

Page 12: Rutherford Public School · 2020. 8. 28. · Public Speaking Multicultural Public Speaking Competition Rutherford Public School hosted the Local Area Finals of the Premier’s Multicultural

Touch Football

Due to the rain, the games set for last week have been postponed until this Tuesday. The games will be played at Max

McMahon Oval starting with the girls at 10:00am.

Basketball

The basketball teams fronted bright and early for the PSSA Knockout Challenge at the Maitland Indoor Basketball

Stadium on Wednesday 6th June. The boys were up first against competition hotshots Telarah Public School and after

some initial nerves they got away to a big lead, however we managed to slow their scoring but the deficit was too big to

claw back. The girls were granted a BYE to start the day and agreed to play in a friendly game against Bellbird Public

School. It was a great start to their knockout campaign. The girls scored at will and defended with determination

winning the game by a huge margin.

The boy’s second game against East Maitland was a nail biter. After going down by eight points early, the boys dug

deep and with one minute to go they had clawed their way back and scores were level. Unfortunately, things didn’t go

our way and we lost by one point.

The girls then faced a tall Bolwarra team. They played with effort but could not keep up with the pace. Turnovers were

costly and Bolwarra were relentless. The girls fought hard in the second half and kept Bolwarra scoreless but the gap

was too big to close.

That afternoon, after the students had returned, I got an email that described the great sportsmanship that our girls,

along with their coach Mrs Smith, displayed. Girls you should be very proud of yourselves, as I know I am. This is the

email:

“Hello, I am a teacher from Bellbird Public School and our basketball team played your girls team today. I wanted you

to know that I was very impressed with the sportsmanship your girls displayed today. We had only made 2 baskets for

each game we had played and our girls set themselves a challenge to try and get 3 in the last game. Your coach said

that the girls had heard this and they allowed our girls to score 10 points which made their day. I had very happy girls

today and I thank your girls for their kindness. Linda Mackenzie, Bellbird Public School, Classroom Teacher.”

Some children experience as much stress, depression, and anxiety as adults do.

And because exercise improves health, a fit child is more likely to be well-rested and mentally sharp.

Even moderate physical activity has been shown to improve a child's skill at arithmetic, reading, and memorisation.
