Russellville Park Not All Super Heroes Wear Capes: Honoring Resident Curly Giebelhouse Curly was born in 1920 in Wapato, Wash., and spent his childhood there. In 1939, at the age of 19, Curly enlisted in the Army for six years, specializing in artillery and as a Lineman. Curly has many memories of his time while fighting in World War II — both good and bad. He was given awards from The Kingdom of Belgium and former President Truman. In 1946, while with a group of friends, Curly met a woman named Darline. He knew she was the one and they married that same year. Darline was an amazing cook and everything she cooked was Curly’s favorite. Curly and Darline had one daughter together, and they raised Darline’s son, who was seven at the time they got married. His family was his world and he loved everything about them. Curly traveled a lot with his family while he was the Director of the Postal Credit Union and he has many mementos from his travels. Unfortunately, in 2001, Darline was diagnosed with cancer. The doctor only gave her six months to live but she fought hard for three-and-a-half years before finally succumbing to the disease. Curly says the hardest day of his life was saying his final goodbye to Darline, the love of his life. In 2009, Curly felt it was time to give back to the people who assisted in caring for his wife while she was in and out of the hospital. He saw that those nurses experience the same pain as the families when someone passes away and knew he could give something back. His appreciation for those nurses brought him back to Providence Portland as a volunteer. Curly is a volunteer in the Short Stay Unit where he assists patients who are going to have same-day surgery. He has accumulated more than 2,250 hours of service since he began volunteering. The Director of Volunteer Services at Providence, Tricia Sullivan, says, “Curly is an inspiration to us all. He comes in before 6 a.m. and helps greet the patients before surgery. He wheels them out as well — better than some people can who are half his age.” His favorite thing about volunteering is meeting all the different people, even becoming Grandpa Curly to a young girl. Not only does Curly volunteer but he has donated over three gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. He has a rare blood type and has been specifically called to donate, which he has never said no to. Volunteering takes a special person with a big heart to continue to care for those in need. We all could learn something from a person like Curly, who has taken the love for his wife and the love for the nurses and turned it into something he’s very passionate about. Russellville Adventure: 130th Annual Spring Rose Show on June 8 Stop and smell this year’s award- winning roses! The exquisite beauty and fragrances of this yearly show emanate from more than 4,000 blooms. Rose growers from across the Pacific Northwest participate and some 6,000 spectators from across the country are expected to visit this year’s Spring Rose Show. Sparkling trophies go to those entrants who grow the most beautiful roses. Mrs. Henry Pittock, wife of the first “Oregonian” publisher, along with some of her neighbors and friends, established the Portland Rose Society in 1889. Their vision was that Portlanders would perpetuate the glory of the rose throughout the years. Their dream has been kept in focus for more than a century by dedicated rose gardeners. From the first rose show in Mrs. Pittock’s own garden in King Heights to today’s extravaganzas at the Lloyd Center Ice Rink, the Rose Society has kept alive the intent and purpose of growing and showing the best of the best of roses for the enjoyment of the citizens of Portland. Russellville Adventure: Fishing Trip at Rainbow Trout Farm on June 15When’s the last time you went fishing? Well then, why not go today? It’s easy, fun and quick. Rainbow Trout Farm is 30 acres of trees, meadows, 2,000 rhododendrons and 10 beautifully landscaped fishing holes brimming with rainbow trout! It’s just a quick trip away. Located just seven miles east of Sandy, Ore., the farm can provide pole, tackles and all the gear you need — even bait. And don’t worry if you’ve never fished a day in your life. They will be happy to help you get started. You see, at Rainbow Trout Farm they’ve got everything but excuses! For some folks, cleaning their catch is part of the fun and they wouldn’t miss it for the world. For others, cleaning fish is for the birds. Whatever you prefer, you’re covered! They provide all the facilities you need to clean your catch or they’ll be glad to do it for you — at no charge. Rainbow Trout Farm is wheelchair accessibility, has broad, convenient pathways, plenty of restrooms and ample places to sit for a spell. They realize that not all seniors’ needs are the same, so while they can accommodate people using wheelchairs and walkers, the 30 beautiful mountain acres also offer plenty of opportunities for robust seniors who want an invigorating challenge. Rainbow Trout Farm doesn’t believe age should ever stop a senior from enjoying life to the fullest!

Russellville Adventure: Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum on June 22With displays ranging from the elegant aeronautic designs of two bike mechanics (Orville and Wilbur Wright) to an actual Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird that can fly at speeds of over 2,000 miles per hour, the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum located in McMinnville, Ore., has a little something for everyone. The centerpiece of these aeronautic breakthroughs is the original Spruce Goose. Built entirely of wood due to wartime restrictions on metals, this massive airplane stands as a symbol of American industry during World War II. Founded in the memory of Captain Michael King Smith, the exhibits celebrate the lives of innovators, pilots and veterans who courageously pioneered flight in these remarkable machines. Plan a visit and learn more about the museum as you immerse yourself in history with ever-expanding attractions and amenities.
