• "It is a real pity, as we could have stolen a win here - but to be honest it would have been a robbery because we didnot deserve the victory," said coach Frank Vercauteren. "When you want to win the league, you need to steal theodd win sometimes, but we did not. There was not enough quality and we were not playing as a team. We won't winmatches like that."

• At the beginning of the second half, Papastathopoulos replaced Dellas, who was suffering from a calf problem. He was subsequently ruled out for the trip to Belgium. Coach Lorenzo Serra Ferrer said: "I trust that we can find theadequate alternative and that his absence won’t show on the pitch."

• Following the Ionikos victory, Ferrer had said: "This encounter was tricky because our opponents were in desperateneed of points. My players were focused and managed to secure the victory. In the first half we were more motivatedand we had several chances to score. In the second our pace dropped, though we still managed to control the game."

• AEK's win against Ionikos was their eighth consecutive win in the Super League.

• It was also AEK's tenth victory in their last eleven games in all competitions. Their only defeat came in the GreekCup, with their elimination at the hands of second division AO Chaidari FC.

• Julio César has scored his seven league goals this season in AEK's last seven encounters. In total, he has scored13 goals in 54 league games since joining AEK in January 2005. He is AEK's joint top scorer in the league, along withLiberopoulos.

• Winger Julio César and striker Liberopoulos are the only AEK players to have featured in all 21 games that theyhave played this season in all competitions.

• After the victory against Milan, Serra Ferrer said: "When we started our matches in the group stage, we hadn'trecorded a single victory in the competition and so it was only logical that we were not really considered to be contendersfor one of the two top spots in the group. After our three first matches, we had just one point but remained calm andnow, with seven points in five encounters, we are favourites for a second-place finish. It is in our own hands."

• Match-winner Julio César added: "To be honest, we were not expecting to beat Milan. However we were in greatform, were optimistic and had self-confidence. We knew that if we stuck to what our coach was telling us we couldproduce a surprise result."

• Liberopoulos spoke to the uefa.com Magazine about his side's injury worries, saying: "These are very importantabsences indeed. However, our side has proved this season that nobody is irreplaceable. The mentality of our coachis that every player in the AEK squad can play at any given time, fill the void left by a team-mate and help the sidewin."

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones

Holders FC Barcelona are not having an easy ride this time around. Failure to beat Werder Bremen would make themthe first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (Thisrecord, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage)

In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregatein the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.

Manchester United FC could become the first team to win their first three games in a group stage and still not progressif they fail to pick up at least a point against SL Benfica.

Alessandro Costacurta will extend the UEFA Champions League oldest player record he set on Matchday 5 to 40years and 226 days if he features against LOSC Lille Métropole. Against AEK Athens FC on Matchday 5, the veterandefender was 40 years and 211 days, 94 days older than previous record holder, Club Brugge KV goalkeeper DanyVerlinden when he played the full 90 minutes against AFC Ajax on 9 December 2003. Laurent Blanc is currently theoldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days having found the net for Manchester UnitedFC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002.

For those already-qualified clubs considering giving a chance to young players, Celestine Babayaro is the youngestplayer to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSCAnderlecht against FC Steaua Bucuresti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute.

PFC Levski Sofia have double incentive for wanting to do well at Chelsea FC. They are aiming to avoid joining 1. FCKošice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA Champions League and never picked up a point. TheSlovakian side did just that in their maiden campaign in 1997/98, and have not returned to the competition since. Onlyfive other teams have ever gone through a single group stage campaign without picking up a point namely SK RapidWien (05/06), RSC Anderlecht (04/05), FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (02/03, first and second groupstage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (01/02, first group stage).

Levski have also shipped 15 goals in their first five outings this term, just four short of the record number let in duringa group stage set by Ferencvárosi TC (19) in the 1995/96 campaign.

Spartak have not won in their last 22 games in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK AthensFC on Matchday 3 this season. AEK ended their run of 21 games without a win with a 1-0 home victory against LOSCLille Métropole on Matchday 4.

Spartak extended their sequence without a win to 22 games with the 2-2 home draw against FC Bayern München onMatchday 5. Those 22 games are made up of 17 defeats and five draws. The last time Spartak won was 22 November2000 with a 4-1 second group stage victory at home against Arsenal FC. Interestingly, Spartak’s last away win wasat Sporting Clube de Portugal, their Matchday 6 opponents, when they won 3-0 in Lisbon on 17 October 2000. Theyhave not won in their last 12 away games in Europe’s premier club competition.

For all their defensive solidity, CSKA have only scored two goals in the first five games. They can take comfort fromthe achievement of Villarreal CF last season and AS Roma in the 2002/03 first group stage, as both clubs advancedto the next phase with just three goals to their name. Villarreal are a particularly noteworthy example, as they madeit all the way to the semi-finals in their debut campaign in the competition.

AEK and AS Roma can still go through with seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introducedin 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/00 and Liverpool FCin 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, afeat achieved by Rangers FC and Bremen last term.

• UEFA Champions League: Did you know?

Domestic champions: This season's competition features 16 domestic league winners from last season, but noneof the eight groups comprising the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League features four champions. Only Group A featuresthree league winners from the last campaign with England, Spain and Bulgaria represented by their champions, namely Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona and PFC Levski Sofia. The fourth club in the group, Werder Bremen, finishedsecond in last season's Bundesliga, five points behind FC Bayern München. All of the remaining groups feature twodomestic league winners with the exception of Group H, where Belgian side RSC Anderlecht are the only champions.Group rivals AEK Athens FC were runners-up in Greece, while LOSC Lille Métropole and AC Milan were classifiedin third place in Ligue 1 and Serie A respectively. Alongside 16 champions, there are nine runners-up and six third-placedfinishers. Arsenal FC are the only club in the group stage to have finished in fourth place in their domestic leaguechampionship last season.

Consecutive participations: This season, Manchester United FC have extended their consecutive participation inthe UEFA Champions League to eleven, a record in the competition. Bayern, PSV Eindhoven, Olympiacos CFP andReal Madrid CF are making their tenth consecutive appearances, one ahead of Arsenal.

Knockout streak: In qualifying for the 2005/06 knockout phase, Real Madrid CF equalled Manchester United FC'srecord of nine consecutive seasons in advancing past the group stage. While United's streak came to an end lastseason, Madrid have featured in the knockout phase every time since the 1996/97 campaign. In those nine seasons,United won the competition once while they also advanced as far as the semi-finals twice, the quarter-finals four timesand the first knockout round twice in the other eight seasons. Madrid, meanwhile, have won the competition threetimes in the last nine years while they advanced as far as the semi-finals twice and the quarter-finals twice. However,in the last two seasons their interest in the competition has ended at the first knockout round.

European return: Of all 32 clubs competing in this season's UEFA Champions League, only FC Spartak Moskvaand FC Girondins de Bordeaux did not participate in a UEFA club competition during the 2005/06 season. Indeed, the two clubs are making their first appearance in UEFA club competition since the 2003/04 season.

Past masters: Four clubs competing in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League were involved in the competition whenit started during the 1992/93 season. AC Milan were beaten finalists (losing to Olympique de Marseille), while PSVEindhoven, PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Porto all participated in the group stage. In addition, AEK Athens FC and FCBarcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle before the group stage.

Long road for debutants: Five clubs have advanced to the group stage from the European Champion Clubs' Cupsecond qualifying round including this season's two debutants, FC København and PFC Levski Sofia. They are joinedby FC Spartak Moskva, FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Steaua Bucuresti as clubs who had to play four matches to claimtheir place in the group stage of the competition. A debutant has not won the competition since Juventus in 1995/96,the Italian side becoming the third club to achieve this following Olympique de Marseille (1992/93, first UEFA ChampionsLeague final) and AFC Ajax (1994/95).

No qualifiers: Of the 32 clubs involved in the group stage, only AS Roma and FC Girondins de Bordeaux have yetto play a qualifying round match in order to reach the UEFA Champions League. Roma are making their fourthappearance in the competition, while Bordeaux are involved for the second time.

The UEFA club competition access list for the 2007/08 season will be examined, together with requests by the associations of San Marino and Andorra for one place in the UEFA Champions League.Terms of reference for the new European Professional Football Strategy Forum promoting and developing dialogueon the European club game will also be discussed.

European Union affairsConcerted co-operation between UEFA and the European political authorities, and the protection of sport's specificnature in future EU legislation, are crucial for football's wellbeing. This was the message from the fourth UEFA Seminaron European Union Affairs held last Thursday and Friday at the Belgian FA headquarters in Brussels, attended bysenior EU officials, members of the European parliament and representatives of UEFA's 52 member associations. The seminar put particular focus on the Independent European Sport Review, which has UEFA's full endorsement, and which contains key recommendations for football's wellbeing. The Brussels gathering also gave an update onthe current state of UEFA's essential dialogue with the European authorities, and on developments in EU policies andwhat these mean for European football.

Medical symposiumAlso last week, UEFA vice-president Senes Erzik welcomed medical experts from across the sporting world to thefourth UEFA Medical Symposium in Istanbul. In his opening address, he said: "Sports medicine plays an increasinglyessential role in modern football. Players now play more matches than ever before and in doing so they place theirbodies under excessive physical strain. As the demands on top level players intensify, greater importance is placedappropriate and specific medical support. It is this increase in importance and the constantly changing nature of sportsmedicine that makes a football specific medical symposium necessary."

Head coach profiles

Frank VercauterenDate of birth: 28/10/1956Nationality: BelgianCoaching career: CS Braine (youth) KV Mechelen (youth then head coach), RSC Anderlecht (assistant then headcoach)

Born in Brussels, Frank Vercauteren spent his career as a left-sided midfielder who played 368 matches in 12 seasonsfor RSC Anderlecht, scoring 92 goals and winning the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1976 and 1978, and the UEFACup in 1983. He won Belgium's Player of the Year award in 1983, and also played for FC Nantes Atlantique and RWDMolenbeek, where he ended his career in 1993.

Vercauteren was a dynamic midfielder who made a key contribution to the Anderlecht side that was considered asone of the best teams in Europe at the time. He was also a pillar of the Belgian national team, winning 63 caps andscoring nine goals. He was a member of the squads for the 1982 and 1986 FIFA World Cups, as well as for the 1984UEFA European Championship.

In 1998, he returned to Anderlecht as assistant coach to Arie Haan. Together with former team-mate Jean Dockx, they took over from Haan that September, and led the club from bottom of the table to a European place. He thenbecame assistant again to Aimé Anthuenis and Hugo Broos as Anderlecht added titles in 2000, 2001, 2004. He tookover on a temporary basis from Broos in early February 2005 before signing a two-year contract in April. Althoughhis first UEFA Champions League campaign was a disappointment, he made up for that by securing the Belgian title.

Lorenzo Serra FerrerDate of birth: 5 March 1953Nationality: SpanishCoaching career: UD Poblense, RCD Mallorca, Real Betis Balompié, FC Barcelona, AEK Athens FC

Like Arrigo Sacchi and Arsène Wenger, Lorenzo Serra Ferrer is one of the rare breed of top coaches never to haveplayed at a high level. The Spaniard spent his playing days on the lower rungs of the footballing ladder in Mallorcabefore turning his attention to coaching as his career began to wind down. Starting at UD Poblense, he guided themto promotion to the Segunda B División before switching to RCD Mallorca in 1983.

Always on the brink of the Primera División, Mallorca were immersed in a cycle of relegation and promotion duringSerra Ferrer's decade in charge as they battled to establish themselves in the Spanish top flight. They finished animpressive sixth in 1986/87, and in 1993 their coach moved to Segunda División team Real Betis Balompié. He guidedthem to promotion in his debut season and they soon began to make waves, finishing third ahead of FC Barcelonain their first season back and reaching the Copa del Rey final two years later, where they were unlucky to lose 3-2 toBarça.

The Catalan giants were clearly impressed by Serra Ferrer, however, and coaxed him to the Camp Nou in 1997 totake a role as youth coach under Louis van Gaal. When the Dutchman was sacked in 2000, it was the Mallorcan thatwas handed the reins until April 2001 when he reverted to his youth-team role. He returned to top-flight coaching in2004 and guided Betis to the best season in their history, winning the Copa del Rey and finishing fourth in the leagueto earn a UEFA Champions League place. There they defeated much-fancied Chelsea FC but it was a rare high in apoor season. When AEK Athens FC offered Serra Ferrer a fresh challenge during summer 2006 he accepted.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list willbe reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubsfrom within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the clubfor two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eightin 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubsfrom simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given agreater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as aconsequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is€750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contractsconcluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe'spremier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA tocover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream inexcess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per centof the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to theclubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m fromTV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of€2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive€2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions Leaguewinners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive,at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by theclubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two orone – participating from a given association.
