Cities in Europe face the challenge of combining competitiveness and sustainable urban development simultaneously.

Page 6: Smart urban district COMBINED WATERLOO - ANDERLECHT

Medium-sized cities have to cope with

competition of the larger metropolises on corresponding issues, and are less well equipped in terms of critical mass, resources and organizing capacity.

“Green Loops City” in China by IADEPT

The Smart District will be designed to be a self sustainable area, where vegetables can be produced and consumed locally.

The area will host in its urban texture an industrial agricultural production of biological products that will provide the community with locally produced food. The urban agricultural

production will adopt hydroponic technologies and high tech green houses.

This will allow to produce 12 months per year and at the same time will reduce the risk of parasites and the use of pesticides and chemical products.

Urban Sustainability is among the most critically important global issues of the 21st century

Page 19: Smart urban district COMBINED WATERLOO - ANDERLECHT

Over half the world’s population live in urban areas and by 2050 that proportion will rise to 70% of all humanity. The big challenge is that cities now consume about 75% of all the world’s energy and emit around 80% of all greenhouse gases. The fight against climate change will therefore be won or lost in cities, so it’s crucial we make our urban habitats more efficient, cleaner and better to live in - not only for ourselves, but for future generations and the earth’s diverse ecosystems.

Sustainability is

a term nowadays largely used in architecture, but MSA

Associates has been pioneering this sector since over 20 years, and now

we’re proud to manage a vast knowledge, use of scientific technologies and

practical experiences that not many other competitors can praise.

This achievements have been possible thanks to the strict collaboration between our office and ABITA (Architettura

Bioecologica e Innovazione Tecnologica per l’Ambiente) the Interuniversity

Center of Florence of whom Marco Sala is the founder

and director.
