INTRODUCTION

International Platinum Corporation is the owner of record of

30 unpatented mining claims located in the southeast corner of Big

Trout Lake in northwestern Ontario. Grid establishment and a

ground magnetometer survey were completed on the property between

February 12 and 15, 1988. The objective of the ground magnetometer

survey was to delineate the basal part of the east-west limb of the

Big Trout Lake Ultramafic-Mafic Intrusion to assist in target

definition for platinum group element (P.G.E.) exploration.

LOCATION AND ACCESS

The "Northeast" claim block of the Big Trout Lake property is

located 245 km north of the town of Pickle Lake and 595 km north

of the city of Thunder Bay in northwestern Ontario (Figure 1). Big

Trout Lake underlies the claim group (Figure 2). Work was carried

out from the project camp site located at Nemeigusabins Lake, 14

km south of Big Trout Lake. The property is covered by NTS map

sheet 53H12.

Big Trout Lake, a Cree community of 800 persons is located on

Post Island adjoining the north shore of Big Trout Lake, about 18

km due northwest of the property and 29 km north of Nemeigusabins

Lake. Services are provided by a Hudson's Bay store and a Co-op

store and the community has daily scheduled air service from the

regional centre of Sioux Lookout located 430 km to the south-

southwest. Cessna float or ski-equipped aircraft are available for

charter at Big Trout Lake.

Access and servicing of the property is also possible by float

or ski-equipped fixed wing aircraft from Pickle Lake, the nearest

sizeable community with year-round road access. Major

mobilization, demobilization and/or fuel hauls can be staged from

Windigo Lake or the Weibenville airstrip, both located adjacent to

an all-weather road north of Pickle Lake and about 160 km from the

property. A winter road extends from north of Pickle Lake past

Kingfisher Lake and Indian Reserve to Big Trout Lake and passes

within 3 km of the claim block. The winter road is not opened

every year and use of the road is restricted to a very brief period

after all government and Indian Reserve priorities are met.

Since the field crews were based out of the Nemeigusabins Lake

camp commuting was accomplished by ski-doo and fixed wing aircraft.

PROPERTY

The "Northeast" claim block comprises 30 unpatented claims

(Figure 3) totalling 486 hectares (1200 acres) as of December 31,

1988. The claims were recorded April 21, 1987 and are as follows:

913603 - 913610 8 913745 - 913747 3 913750 - 913755 6 913758 - 913763 6 913766 - 913772 l

30

The claims are located in the Patricia Mining Division with

the Mining Recorder's office located at Sioux Lookout. Government

claim maps covering the area are G-2018 (East of Beardy Creek) and

G-1949 (Beardy Creek)

REGIONAL GEOLOGY

The Big Trout Lake "Northeast" claim block covers part of the

central arm of the Big Trout Lake ultramafic-mafic intrusive

complex (B.T.L. Complex) which lies within the Big Trout Lake

volcanosedimentary belt of the God's Lake Subprovince in the

Superior Province of the Canadian Shield (Thurston et al, 1979).

Archean felsic intrusive rocks, hybrid rocks of trondhjemitic

composition and migmatitic gneiss surround the Big Trout Lake belt.

The Big Trout Lake volcanosedimentary belt was intruded by the

93 km long and up to 7.5 km thick B.T.L. Complex during Archean

time. The belt was subsequently folded into a generally northwest

striking Z-shape with the northwest striking north arm and the

east-west striking central arm associated with antiformal

structures folded about an east-west synformal axis. A synform

dominates the southeast striking 39 km long Nemeigusabins Lake arm

of the complex which Thurston et al (1979) interpret to be bounded

on the west by the Big Trout Lake - Wunnumin Lake Fault. Ontario

Geological Survey Map 2292 provides the best published version of

the geology, shape and structure of the intrusion.

Anorthosite, gabbroic anorthosite, gabbro and peridotite are

the dominant lithologies recognized in regional mapping.

Several northwest striking faults with dextral slip have been

interpreted from displaced airborne magnetic trends associated with

basal ultramafic sequences. Other northeasterly striking faults

have been interpreted locally and may be reflected by topographic

linears.

HISTORY OF EXPLORATION AND PREVIOUS WORK

Regional geological mapping has been carried out by provincial

geologists as early as 1913 (Tyrrell) and 1960 {Hudec, 1964). More

detailed work was carried out in 1971 by Thurston et al (1971 and

1979) as part of Operation Winisk.

Page 10: RPT ON 1988 GR MAG & GRID ESTABLISHMENT NE CL BLOCK …

J. Farrington carried out a 3 hole drill program (1686 1 ) in

1970 and Canadian Occidental Petroleum Limited drilled 3 holes

{533.6 m) in 1982 after carrying out a ground magnetometer and VLF-

EM survey.

Mapping has, in the area of the property, identified gabbroic

anorthosite to anorthosite components of the Big Trout lake Complex

flanked on the north by granite and on the south by foliated to

banded metasediments. The drilling intersected a mixed sequence

of peridotite, gabbro, anorthositic gabbro and anorthosite with

minor sulphides, magnetite and chromite.

GRID ESTABLISHMENT

Grid D (Figure 4) was established on the ice and cut across

the islands within the grid area on three days during the period

of February 12 to 15. A total of 3.7 km of baseline and 27.0 km

of cross-lines were established by chaining with pickets placed at

25 m intervals. All lines from L4W to L34W were established at 200

m spacing while the four eastermost lines were established at a 150

m spacing. This resulted in only a 100 m spacing between L3W and

L4W. This spacing on the eastermost lines was to provide some

duplication of former Can Oxy grid.

Grid establishment was jointly carried out by Atex Reg'd of

Pickle Lake, the Claridge La Rose Geophysics Ltd. crew and

International Platinum staff and contract personnel.

GROUND MAGNETOMETER SURVEYS

General

The proton magnetometer survey was carried out by Claridge La

Rose Geophysics Ltd. of Bracebridge, Ontario with Exploranium

Geometrics G816 field units measuring total field intensity to an

accuracy of one gamma. An Exploranium Geometrics 826A base station

unit established at the Nemeigusabins Lake camp recorded variations

in diurnal total field intensity by means of 10 second readings.

A total of 27.0 line km of magnetometer survey was completed

on all cross lines on Grid D between February 12 and 15, 1988.

Line spacing was generally 200 m with several lines at 100 and 150

m spacing. Readings were taken at a 12.5 m interval. The loop

technique was utilized on lines without baseline reference

surveying because the base station magnetometer was used. All data

was then manually corrected for diurnal variation. Preliminary

contoured maps were prepared for field use.

Grid D Magnetic Survey Results

Grid D 1988 magnetic survey results are presented as diurnally

corrected data on Map l and as a contoured plot on Map 2, both at

a scale of 1:5,000. Plotting and contouring were done by Urquhart

Dvorak Ltd. from corrected field data supplied by Claridge La Rose

Geophysics Ltd.

The east-west geological trend of the central arm of the

B.T.L. Complex is prominently reflected by east-west contour trends

across the 3.55 km strike extent of the Northeast claim block.

Prominent features are:

the magnetically low ^60,800 gammas) response along the south

edge of the grid, from B/L, L 34W, to 5S, L 1+50 E. This

appears to correlate with metasedimentary rocks flanking the

intrusion.

a generally narrow magnetic anomaly (to 64,248 gammas) that

extends almost continuously from 14-50S, L 26W to 44-60 S, L

1+50 E. The cause is unknown but may be associated with an

Page 13: RPT ON 1988 GR MAG & GRID ESTABLISHMENT NE CL BLOCK …

l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l

ultramafic rock unit and may be closely associated with the

base of the Big Trout Lake Complex.

a prominent, up to 67,000 gamma, anomaly that extends with

local pinch-out and fault offset across the entire grid just

north of baseline. This correlates on the east with

peridotite intersected in two of the Can Oxy drill holes.

several local magnetic highs at 2S, L 1+50W and 1+50S, L 10W

are associated with known and interpreted ultramafic rocks.

the northerly 100 to 500 m of the property exhibits a low

magnetic response apparently reflecting anorthosite and gabbro

lithologies.

most magnetic lows on the property are interpreted to be due

to dipole effect.

northeast striking faults may explain discontinuities in some

of the magnetic anomalies. Principal examples are at L32W,

2N and through B/L, 1+50W.

a steep south dip is locally interpretable from minor

assymmetry of contours for some magnetic anomalies.

CONCLUSIONS

The proton magnetometer survey delineated anomalous magnetic

responses of variable strength and continuity at three levels of

stratigraphy. Ultramafic rocks, dominantly peridotite have

previously been drill intersected beneath anomalies at two levels

of the intrusion.

The 3.55 km, property-wide trace of the northern anomaly

provides excellent stratigraphic control and the weaker, southern

anomaly which sub-parallels it probably represents a basal or near

basal intrusive unit flanked to the south by a broad zone of low

magnetic susceptibility that apparently correlates with footwall

metasedimentary rocks.

Survey results will assist in the selection of target areas

for drill testing in the P.G.E. exploration program.
