aboard Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif., March 20. Marines from VMM-264 participated in a cycle of Mojave Viper

    training.

    BlackKnightsfinishMojaveViper training

After a month of Mojave Viper training in the desert

aboard Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twen-

tynine Palms, Calif., the main body of Marine Medium Til-

trotor Squadron 264 returned home to Marine Corps Air

    Station New River, March 25.

While the goal of the exercise was to acclimate Marines

to an environment similar to deployed locations, it also al-

lowed different units work together in a way they wouldnt

otherwise, said Capt. Alexis A. Ramirez, VMM-264 MV-

    22B Osprey pilot.

Infantry battalions that do not typically work with avia-

tion Marines got the opportunity to work together during

    Mojave Viper.

The mission of Marine infantry is to destroy the enemy

by fire and maneuver. However, they cant accomplish that

destruction without closing with their adversaries within

    range of their weapons.

While ground Marines train to pass over any kind of

land, MV-22B Ospreys provide a superior option, said Sgt.

    Christopher R. Hardister, Company L, 3rd Battalion, 8th

    Marine Regiment squad leader.

It is a faster means to a better end, said Hardister.

The Black Knights worked closely with ground units

during many flights, including troop movements, aerial de-

liveries and tactical recovery of aircraft and personnel mis-

    sions, said Ramirez.

All the training culminated in a final event of Mojave Vi-

per that combined efforts from VMM-264 and other units

including 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Reconnais-

sance Battalion, and 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines.

To support ground units, the Black Knights performed

case evacuations for mock casualties, said Ramirez.

After the event, the Black Knights coordinated their

own training. This included firing the Interim Defensive

Weapon System and training junior pilots to prepare them

    for future deployments.

While the pilots and crew chiefs flew, the maintainers

readied the aircraft for the cross-country trip back home.

The flight line mechanics, avionics technicians and other

maintainers had a tough time but never stopped working to

keep the aircraft in flying condition, said Master Sgt. Charles

    A. Colon, VMM-264 maintenance control chief.

They say you cant have a plan with these aircraft, Co-

lon said. But, we have to. We try to get these guys from

one job to the next as best as possible.

Despite several long repairs aside from usual mainte-

nance, the Marines kept the Ospreys flying and allowed the

crewmembers to log more hours in the air.

Several Marines will receive additional training. These

select few left Twentynine Palms prior to the end of Mo-

jave Viper to attend Weapons and Tactics Instructor course

aboard MCAS Yuma, Ariz. These Marines will return home

at a later date with further experience.

But, several who have returned said its time to return to

    familiar sights.

As much as the training is valuable and worthwhile, ev-

eryone is excited for home, said Ramirez.

    ROTOVUE Staff

    Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 266

conducted low altitude tactics and tail-gun

marksmanship fire exercises along the East

Coast with two MV-22B Ospreys, March 12.

    Low-altitude training and tail-gunner

skills are very perishable and must be prac-

ticed frequently to be (successful during mis-

sions), said Capt. Seth M. Grant, VMM-266

naval air training and operating procedures

standardization officer. It is one of the

    Marine Expeditionary Units key capabilities

    when we deploy.

The exercise commenced when the Os-

preys took off from the air station, he said.

They flew south toward South Carolina at

    high speeds conducting low-altitude tactics.

It is my job to help call out possible ob-

stacles to better inform the pilots of their

surroundings, said Cpl. Frederick T. Nash,

VMM-266 crew chief. Tall obstacles, such

as buildings, can be dangerous when flying

at such high speeds and low altitudes.

Once they reached South Carolina, Nash

said the Ospreys turned around and head-

ed north toward Marine Corps Air Station

    Cherry Point.

To make the simulation more realistic, the

    Fighting Griffins conducted live-fire training

northeast of Cherry Point at range BT9 with

help from Cherry Point Range Control, Gi-

    ant Killer.

The target was a sunken barge right off

the coast. The crew chiefs aboard the Osprey

took turns firing the M240G machine gun

with an attached spade grip. Both crew chiefs

took turns firing 800 7.62 mm rounds.

Nash said, usually the senior crew chief

is the tail gunner aboard the Osprey. Aside

from operating the mounted M240G, the

tail gunner has other responsibilities. He is

in charge of working with combat cargo,

managing Marines aboard the Osprey and

    loading and unloading Marines.

Nash said live ordnance is important to

the training exercise because it helps keep

the crew chiefs accurate and proficient with

the different weapons that are employed

aboard the Osprey. It also helps build mus-

cle memory with loading, reloading and per-

    forming immediate action drills.

At the conclusion of the training ex-

ercise, the Ospreys landed and refueled at

    New River.

Our mission was a success, said Grant.

We met all the objectives and were able

to increase our readiness for (our) next

    deployment.

arine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167 celebrated its 44th anniversary as

a squadron aboard Marine Corps Air Station New Rivers gymnasium, March

    16.

The entire squadron came together behind the station gymnasium to celebrate with

friendly competitions including sumo wrestling suits and pugil sticks. They gathered in an

informal setting so they could reflect upon their accomplishments and heritage.

Lt. Col. Shawn J. Hughes, HMLA-167 commanding officer, held a formation at the

field behind the gym and told his Marines he is proud to be the CO of a distinguished

squadron and then presented six Marines with meritorious mast.

Then the Marines received a brief history of the squadron by 1st Lt. Robert Beatty,

    squadron adjutant.

HMLA-167 is the oldest light attack helicopter squadron in the United States Ma-

    rine Corps, he said.

The squadron was activated at Marble Mountain Air Facility in the Republic of Viet-

    nam, March 15, 1868.

During its time in Vietnam, the squadron flew more than 60,000 flight hours in sup-

port of American and South Vietnamese service members against Communist forces.

HMLA-167 departed Vietnam May 26, 1971, and established a permanent home

    on MCAS New River.

In the 10 years prior and up to 1983, the squadron flew an additional 65,000 mishap-

    free flight hours.

In the 1980s, the squadron aided humanitarian and disaster relief in Haiti and the Do-

minican Republic, and also assessed peacekeeping in Lebanon.

In the 1990s, the squadron, as part of the 22ndMarine Expeditionary Unit, conducted

the largest noncombatant evacuation operation since the Vietnamese exodus fromMon-

rovia Liberia. They were also called in to service in Operation Desert Storm.

In the 2000s, HMLA-167 deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan several times and also

reached several milestones like reaching more than 100,000 mishap-free flight hours.

The squadron displays the Joint Meritorious Unit Award Streamer, Global War on

Terrorism Service Streamer, Navy Unit Commendation Streamer with two Bronze

    Stars, and several other awards.

After the awards were presented and the history was told, they had a cake cutting cer-

emony. Similar to the Marine Corps birthdays cake cutting tradition, Hughes gave a slice

of cake to the Marine who has been with the squadron the longest and then that Marine

passed it to the Marine who has been with the squadron the shortest.

Immediately after the formation the competition games began.

The Marines formed 20 teams and competed in traditional Scottish Highland game

events. The games included the caber toss, stone putt and a Scottish hammer throw.

After all the points were added up, there was a five-way tie for first place. To break

the tie, the event coordinators created a final event called the eliminator. It was a

timed obstacle course which consisted of spinning their forehead on bat, 100-meter

dash, low crawling and several inflated obstacles.

After the winners were announced and a safety brief was given, the Marines were re-

leased to enjoy the rest of the squadron birthday in their own way.

AMarine exits the last obstacle in the eliminator, a final tie-breaker obstacle course, and runs for the finish line at the squadrons 44th anniversary, March 16.

Marines with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167 dump a bucket of water over Lt. Col. Shawn J. Hughes, HMLA-167 commanding officer, in celebration of the squadrons 44th birthday, March 16.

Lt. Col. Shawn J. Hughes, Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167 commanding officer, presents several Marines

with certificates of commendation at the squadrons 44th anniversary as a helicopter squadron, March 16.

Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167 celebrates the squadrons 44th birthday with a presentation of awards and

a competition consisting of 20 teams made of Marines from within the squadron. HMLA-167 was commissioned in the

Republic of Vietnam April 1, 1968.
