Great cancer care startswith great people.
Onslow Memorial Hospital is proud to have
received the Commission on Cancer’s Accreditation
with Commendation for our Cancer Care. It’s a hard-
earned accomplishment and distinction that less than
25% of hospitals have earned.
Treating cancer takes more than just one group. It
takes a dedicated team of physicians and staff from
both the hospital and key cancer-treating practices in
our community. Many thanks to the providers in the

“Alright Marines, gather ‘round,” said Gunnery Sgt.Slouch, public affairs chief. We stood nervously in the roomwhere only weeks before two of those we’d known had died.“We need someone to take over Dies’ job — Carmen, that’sgoing to be you.” She nodded solemnly. “And Col. Trout, thestation commanding officer, wants someone to write a newsstory about all the deaths and assure people that everythingis all right.”I chanced a glance at the others. Bamcis and Cole were
calm. They were combat camera Marines, so of course theyweren’t going to write it. With Wales gone, I was the only pub-lic affairs Marine not a corporal or above. I hoped againsthope that Cpl. Gaine or Cpl. Easybake would offer to takethe story. The hope lasted a heartbeat.“Lance Cpl. Oreo, you’ll take that,” said the gunny.“Oh, man,” I groaned quietly. I had trouble writing change
of command stories. How was I supposed to write somethingabout all the people in our office become stiffs? Worse thanthat, how was I supposed to calm the general public when Iwas at the edge of panic myself? Wales’ death was one thing— the guy took more pills in a day than the average painkillerpopper — but how was everyone buying that Samantha “justhappened” to trip over her heel in such a way that it landedin her throat? And then Cpl. Dies just — just dying right nextto her. Whatever the docs said, I didn’t buy that death by too-tight-sleeves thing at all. No way, man. Something was fishy. For whatever reason, everyone else was acting like this was
all normal. Well, if they wanted to give me the story, I’d dohow my departed non-commissioned officers had taught meand research. If there was some greater truth I, Lance Cpl.Oreo, would unveil it.“Alright, now that that’s done, who’s ready for lieutenant
PT?” asked gunny to a room full of moans of distaste.“Gunnery sergeant,” said Private Second Award Bamcis,
“we just had invaluable members of our shop die. Don’t wedeserve a little rest and grieving time?”Lt. Floods peeked in, already in running gear. “Sitting
around is bad for you, Bamcis. The exercise will make us allfeel better. Now go get changed. We’re doing uphill sprintruns today.” Everyone trickled out of the room to change asshe added, “Be back in 15 minutes!”As I changed I pondered the strangeness of the last few
weeks, trying to link together all of the deaths in my mind, find something connecting them. Alas, other than where theyworked I could find no common thread. We formed up in the parking lot, the lieutenant at the front
of our ever-shrinking mini-squad of Marines. We began torun, a nice steady jog to warm us up until we split into pairs. As the fastest guy in the shop, I easily outpaced my partner,Cole.
“Go on without me,” the combat camera Marine puffed. Inodded, barely acknowledging him, and let myself go into au-topilot. Running was my thinking time. If I could find a con-nection between the deaths, this was when it would happen.Lance Cpl. Wales, first dead, heart exploded from an over-
dose on his pre-workout supplements. Wales was always care-ful about what he ingested. No way he’d make that kind ofmistake. Cpl. Ski, getting out that day, would have noticedif something was wrong with his vehicle. Whatever the docshad said, no one died from rolling their sleeves too tight, andthere was no way Samantha could have fallen on her heel.Something was just off.“Where is Cole?” asked Sgt. Followers as she and the lieu-
tenant squeaked to a halt at our stopping point.“He told me to go ahead without him,” I said, straining to
see who was next. There was Cpl. Gaine and Sgt. Tunnels, trying to encour-
age Bamcis to finish the run. “Come on, Bamcis, you gotthis!” Gaine enthused. “You’re almost there. Come on!”“’Rah, corporal,” huffed the private second class, falling
to the grass.“Where are Cole and Carmen?” one sergeant asked the
other.“Cole fell back a while ago and Bamcis was walking next to
Carmen, so we picked him up along the way,” said the othersergeant to the one. “Cole said he hurt his ankle or some-thing.”Sgt. Followers rolled her eyes. “Well, we’ll wait on them.”It was a good ten minutes before Cole limped into view,
Carmen trailing a few hundred yards behind him. Bamcis satup, hands in his track suit jacket pockets to watch as Colecame onto the grass. “Good job, man,” he said. “You beatsomeone.”Cole sat beside Bamcis and glared at him, then turned to
watch Carmen finish. He glanced up at her, glanced at oneof the steam pipes running around our office, back to her. Iwatched him watching her, watching the pipe. Bamcis turnedand watched me as I watched Cole watching. He turnedto watch Cole, opened his mouth as I watched.Sgt. Tunnels glanced at his watch beside
me, keeping time. Then something hap-pened that stopped me from watchingCole watch Carmen. The steam pipelet out a groan that turned into ashriek. The shriek was accom-panied by a hiss and crack, followed by Carmen’sscream as she fell underthe weight of plastic andmetal and condensed air.I turned back to Cole.
I watched as his gazeslowly turned from thefallen Marine and he met
my eyes, watching me watch him. My blood ran cold as a the-ory started forming in my mind. Before I could lose my train of thought, I ducked inside
and started up my computer. Cole was the first one in theoffice the day Wales died. He could have snuck some extrapowder into the wall-like Marine’s food. He was also MIAduring a good portion of the run today. Yes, it was all startingto fall into play.I paused my fevered typing and stared at the screen. “But
what’s the motive?” I whispered to myself.“What?” came Bamcis’ voice from behind me.I jumped in my chair and minimized the word document
with my theory. “I said I’m hungry.” My stomach growled, asif cued, and I realized it was true. I glanced around suspicious-ly, grabbed my bag of cone-shaped, taco flavored corn chipsand slowly turned back until I was sure Bamcis had moved on.He was Cole’s little crony. Who knew what those camera-
pointers did when no one was looking. I shoved a handful ofcrunchy, spicy goodness in my mouth and waited until I wassure the coast was clear.Okay, Cole and Bamcis were probably working together.
Maybe it was some strange vendetta against the other Marinesin the office. Maybe Bamcis was just spiteful from being ninja-punched back down to private first class and was willing tofollow Cole into the darkness.I coughed, pounded my chest as I tried to swallow down
the chips. A sip of water and I was good. I looked back at thekeyboard, poised to write the truth I was so sure of. This wasit, my big break. Maybe I’d even get a NAM for this.My fingers twitched. They looked weird. Fat and kind of
purple, like sausages. I was the skinniest guy in the shop; myfingers weren’t fat. In fact, my whole head felt heavy all of asudden. As my brain slowed down, I saw the shell at the edge of my
corn chip bag. Slowly, with the last bit of energy I had I typedout, PEANUTS. And the world went black.
Is Oreo dead meat? What truth was he trying to tellthe world? Stay tuned for the next installment of
THE END OF US.
