Environmental Sustainability Programme

Holiday Inn Rotorua utilises Green Engage to manage our environmental sustainability. Green Engage is the InterContinental Hotel Group’s (IHG) own online system designed to help us monitor, reduce and manage our energy consumption, as well as conserve the water we need and reduce the waste we produce.

The system includes a checklist of actions, “green solutions”, that we can implement to reduce our carbon footprint, taking into account costs and impact on guests experience. Green Engage will enable us to benchmark our energy performance and sustainability against similar IHG hotels worldwide, based on climate and other environmental factors.

Please help us reduce our impact on the environment. Below are some actions you could follow during your stay in Rotorua and New Zealand.

Rotorua is a great place to live, work and visit and we’re keen to make sure it stays that way for future generations to enjoy. We’re taking steps to improve the environmental impact that we have on our city and we encourage you to do the same during your stay.

Here are some simple actions to consider while you’re in Rotorua:

• If you are staying two or more nights and do not require your room to be serviced opt in to our ‘Greener Stay’ by placing the door hanger on the outside of your room door before you retire for the night.• Consider your energy use. Turn off lights when they’re not needed and try not to overcharge cameras, iPods and mobile phones. Once they’re charged they’re good to go. • We will only change the bed linen if you ask. Just use the card on the bedside table.• Hang towels for reuse.• Fresh water is the worlds most precious resource. Have short showers, use the toilet’s half flush.• Rotorua’s water is clean and fine to drink straight from the tap. Feel free to refill your water bottle from the lobby dispenser• Reduce, reuse recycle. Look out for conveniently located recycling bins at the hotel, i-SITE Visitor Centres, and in public places.• Leave any unwanted recyclable items next to the rubbish bin on departure. • Take your own bag to go shopping. There are plenty of great reusable bags to choose from and some places charge for bags, so you’ll save money too.• See the city like a local. Walk, cycle or take public transport - there are loads of options in Rotorua.

Thank you for helping to protect Rotorua and New Zealand’s environment.

Unique to Rotorua - The use of Geothermal Energy

Holiday Inn Rotorua takes environmental issues very seriously. There is a unique and important relationship between the local geothermal activity and some of the energy sources used by this hotel.

Holiday Inn Rotorua does not use boilers or rely on diesel, coal, petrol, gas or electricity to run our guests hot water system. Instead natural resources are used, which in no way harm our environment, are pollution free and more importantly are sustainable.

Holiday Inn Rotorua draws geothermal fluid from a natural hot spring, located behind the hotel; the temperature of this fluid from the source is approx 96 degrees Celsius (205 degrees Fahrenheit). The geothermal fluid is run around a ring-main system and through a series of heat exchangers, which in turn heats the town supplied cold water for use in all guest rooms, outdoor pool and spas.

Once used, the cooled geothermal fluid is returned into the Puarenga Stream, located behind the hotel.

This is a truly remarkable and unique way of using a renewable energy source without any impact on our environment.

The diagram is an outline of how it all works.
