OCTOBER 2015 VOL 9 No 4

Dear District Governors

Welcome to the October newsletter. October is Economic and Community Development month. It is pleasing to see across the world the many Rotary projects and the ways Rotarians add value to the development of communities.

There is a desire to reduce by 3% the number of clubs that have not donated to Rotary’s charity, The Rotary Foundation. There are over 200 clubs in our zones that have not contributed at all to The Rotary Foundation. My office is assisting RRFCs and District Chairs in providing information to them.

In the cases I have seen, I have found that the club members were simply not aware of the good work of The Rotary Foundation. Education of Rotarians is key.

World Polio Day is on the 24th of October, and for three years in a row now, Rotary will host and stream a celebration. As some of you may know, the World Health Organization had

officially declared Nigeria polio-free and removed it from the list of endemic countries. You can find more on Rotary.org, endpolio.org and through the social media channels.

It is still a positive year to date for Membership in our part of the world. Take a look at our list of countries by membership in the South Pacific and Philippines office area on Page 4.

Looking forward to seeing the Filipino Rotarians in Manila for the Institute.

Unfortunately, I will miss the New Zealand and Australian ones as I will be in Evanston.

Message from

RI Director RY 2014-2016, Zones 7B and 8 Daumonguiller “Guiller” E. Tumangan

Member: Rotary Club of Makati West, District 3830

The Rotary News wrote: “As dusk fell over Chicago, participants in the Under One Sky event held up blue lights, transforming the plaza where they were gathered into a field of fireflies to #LightTheWay to a more just world…...Under One Sky Chicago was one of more than 40 such events in the United States and more than 150 around the world …. to demonstrate commitment to ending extreme poverty and inequali-ty by 2030 and to promote action on climate change. Sydney, New Delhi, Johannesburg, São Paulo, and New York held a similar event. For us in Rotary, the launch of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals simply affirmed what we Rotarians, armed with our vocations and backstopped by our own Rotary Foundation, have been able to do by pooling resources in over 100 years, courageously and passionately confronting complex human situations and creating positive change. Personally, I was privileged to be a life seeing tourist in Zones 7 and 8. Etched in my heart and mind are images of what should be sustained in your respective districts -- especially the Rotary programs/projects that are now an integral part of your socio-economic cultural streetscape, landscape and seascape. Let me just congratulate all of you for the multi-district projects that you are busy with this October. I surfed the web just to see the relevance of “Under One Sky” is to Zones 7 and 8. I found out that Timor Leste is the “youngest nation” having the highest number of millennial in its population. This will be an interesting area of study after the Youth Summit and a great follow-up story to the Success Conference. Then, I looked for the Human Development Index (HDI) -- a composite statistic of life

expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators -- to see country ranking. Except for New Zealand and Australia which are ranked among the world’s very highly developed, the other countries are ranked among the medium and lowly developed. It was foresight when President Ravi asked us in the presidential citation program to “enhance a project’s scope and visibility by partnering with at least five other Rotary Clubs in your region.” What a great opportunity for partnerships and Global Grants! The attainment of Rotary’s 2020 Vision and the 2030 SD Goals can be accelerated by our selfless campaign for Arch Klumph Society, Major Gifts and Paul Harris Society contributors from among Rotarians and non-Rotarians. Let’s this year’s observance of World Polio Day, a time for honoring those who lost their lives in bringing the polio vaccine to the last child in each community, especially in the conflict-ridden countries. Looking back, we can say that the fight against polio taught us the value of vocational service – Rotary Leaders were at the right place at the right time to influence decision making and authorize critical actions that launched 3-H Grants and Polio-Plus. Moving forward, let us study the socio-cultural and communications systems that made eradication possible and be better prepared to prevent the threats to our health and well-being. We are confident that we will end polio forever. The only thing that is real is NOW. And each day that we are a gift to world, we definitely leave behind countless legacies.

ANNUAL FUND—STRONG START KEEPS

REGION IN FRONT

An excellent September result from The Philippines

and a reasonable result from Australia ensured that

the region remains in a strong position after three

months. Overall, contributions to the Annual Fund

are up 20% over the corresponding period last year

and that’s a great position to be in.

Philippine districts have poured on the pressure as

they ready themselves for Foundation month in

November. High levels of PHF and Major Donor

activity will make it a memorable month for all.

District 3810 had a magnificent September and now

leads the field with a result that’s almost double the

next best. Both districts 3830 and 3780 are well up

on last year’s figures while districts 3850 and 3860

are showing strong signs of improvement.

Australian districts did not have a strong September

but are still around 7% up on last year’s numbers.

District 9800 leads the pack with a strong growth

over last year and district 9780 is much the same.

These are the two leading districts in Australia in

dollar terms and they probably want to keep it that

way. Plenty of improvement in other districts (11 or

the 21 districts are ahead of last year) so the signs

look good.

Our New Zealand friends are more or less equal

with last year’s performance and that’s mainly due

to the ‘hot’ start put in by district 9930. They are

almost double last year’s result so the other five

districts have a bit of chasing to do. A slow start in

Indonesia but no doubt things will change as the

year progresses. Plenty of room for improvement

and plenty of committed Rotarians ready to make a

difference!

POLIO FUNDING STRUGGLES

Australian districts have traditionally provided

much of the funding we generate for the End Polio

Now campaign but this appears to be slowing down

as we approach the most critical stage of our long

battle. The end is so close but funding remains one

of the most critical issues and we all need to keep

our minds firmly set on our ultimate goal.

There are many disappointing YTD results across

Australian districts. Twelve of the twenty one

districts are down on last year and others have not

increased sufficiently to cover that loss. There are a

couple of exceptions and it’s good to see district

9810 powering ahead and district 9550 making good

progress.

Support from districts in the Philippines is gathering

strength and all other than a couple of districts are

in front of last year. This is a good sign because this

is where it all started. Our success in the eradication

of polio from the Philippines was the key driver in

setting our global initiative in motion so it’s good to

see increased support coming from that region.

New Zealand continues their strong support of polio

eradication and while a few dollars down on last

year, they will all be working hard to keep this

campaign moving along as strongly as possible.

District 9940 remains a strong supporter and

growth from district 9930 is good to see.

We currently have a position where there have been

just 48 WPV cases reported so far this year against

359 cases at the same stage last year. Those 359

cases were spread across 9 countries last year and it

is great news to now have the WPV confined to just

two countries – Pakistan (36) and Afghanistan (12).

Is this the year when we see the last case of Polio

(WPV) reported?

ONE PLUS ONE EQUALS TWO

This heading is not really an astounding

revelation but when it comes to the combined

personal cash contributions from a Rotarian

and his/her partner it might be news.

Within our system we have a process called

“linked accounts”. This can be done between a

husband and wife, or person and partner, and

it automatically combines the value of both

persons’ contributions. Contributions from

either will appear on the other’s file as an

adjustment, so the cash contribution total

listed will always be the combination of both.

The real value of this system is that it tracks

the combined contributions of both donors so

that due recognition can be organized when

the combined total reaches the Major Donor

level of US$10,000. Major Donor recognition

is through the combined giving of both

partners and the ‘linked account’ system

ensures that this is recognized in a timely

manner.

GLOBAL GRANTS GATHER STRENGTH

Interesting to see the contribution figures for

September and analyze just how the money is

coming in. While lots of emphasis is always

placed on giving to the Annual Fund, it’s great

to see so much cash coming in for “Other”

which really boils down to Global Grants. The

Philippines and Australian numbers are up

enormously over the same period last year and

that’s a good thing to see. In our total region,

the contributions to Global Grant projects has

just about doubled (up 91%) and that means

more is happening through club and district

efforts to make our world a better place.

A CHALLENGE FOR ALL

District Governors are being asked to put

effort into reducing the number of TRF non-

giving clubs by 3% thereby increasing the

number of giving clubs. A few statistics for our

region last year are:

Non-giving Clubs - Annual Fund

Philippines 127

Australia 165

New Zealand 35

Non-giving Clubs - Polio

Philippines 557

Australia 418

New Zealand 114

Non-giving Clubs – Total Giving

Philippines 104

Australia 92

New Zealand 22

There are a few districts with zero non-giving

clubs which makes it hard to reduce by 3%.

Just keep it at zero and everyone will be

delighted. There are also a number of clubs

with just one or two non-giving clubs. Getting

those districts down to zero would be a great

achievement.

BRIDGE OF SPIES

The excitement level is rising as we approach

the date for our pre-release screening of this

movie for polio. Get your friends and families

involved for a great night out and make every

post a winner!

The value of what we do comes back in the

shape of a polio-free world.

We now have fifteen districts that have 100% collections from their respective clubs. Good work by all the

Governors, Assistant Governors and District Secretaries of these districts. For those who have yet to settle their

accounts, just a gentle reminder that our collection period for the July 2015-invoice is only up to 31 October 2015.

If District Governors want to access reports on club balances, please sign into MyRotary, and click on

Manage>District Administration.
