Full name: Rotary Club of Patan Durbar Square

Significance of the name “Patan Durbar Square”: The name does mean Palace Complex of Patan – the famous oldest city of fine arts in Kathmandu valley. Exquisite artworks and architectural buildings are scattered in and around this complex from 16th century and onwards. Most monuments of this complex are listed in the World Heritage of Monuments.

Fellowship is the cornerstone of Rotary. Thanks to the efforts of everyone our fellowship is superb.

Membership is essential to our well being and we have once again achieved a net increase in members.

We are a service organisation and our fund raising is at an all time high, including our share of a dialysis machine for the Turkey earthquake victims.

This is the first full year that we have enjoyed the advantage of our new venue and we have been made very welcome and have been well looked after thanks to Michael and Heinze. We have had interesting meetings, entertaining social events and some very successful fund raising.

Our efforts in the local community include the Family Bike Ride, the Hole in One at the Town Fair,

Youth has always been high on our agenda and our debating team made their way into the semi finals, we had a candidate for RYLA, trained two local teachers for Peer Support and we have two candidates for the Science Forum.

We had Ben Renehan return from Denmark and Geison Arisi returned to Brazil after one of the most successful Youth exchanges ever.

We continued our recognition of outstanding persons in the community with a Courtesy and Kindness award with Ern Wardell working like a dynamo.

The ANZAC ceremony at the resited memorial grew to more than sixty attending and is set to be a significant event for Diamond Creek and for this club.

With our assistance the local Salvation Army Red Shield appeal reached a record $50,000.

Frequently Governments give large cheques for international aid to other countries, but the best way to ensure that the assistance is going directly to the source, is to have some personal involvement. That is certainly what we are doing this month! February is World Understanding Month and we are involved in number of activities. These actions undoubtedly show that we care, and hopefully in our small way, we can contribute to make the world a better place. One of the most exciting prospects for the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek is to become a “sister club” with the Rotary Club of Patan Durbar Square, Nepal. Many of you will have met Ram at our last meeting and since then, we have been looking at ways that our two clubs can work together. Ram has a number of projects in mind where we may be able to assist. The needs there are great.

· It’s hard to believe, but most of the Secondary Schools in rural areas in Nepal, do not have computers for the students to use! This is one suggestion where we could assist.

· Rheumatic Heart Disease in children (once known here as Rheumatic Fever) has been eradicated in developed countries. However it is common in Nepal. Another program where we could get involved is the Rheumatic Heart Awareness Program.

· Many villages do not have safe drinking water and need to travel over a kilometre just to fetch water for their daily needs. Construction of an intake weir and collection chamber in one of these villages is another suggestion.

· Some backward villages do not even have a Primary School for their children to attend. Whilst this is a huge project on its own, we could contribute to some part of it.

Becoming a sister club to the Rotary Club of Patan Durbar Square, Nepal, is one of the best ways that we can really show that we care and do some wonderful worthwhile work to assist others in the international community.

An equally exciting event this week will be the arrival of our Exchange Student, Beatriz Helena Da Costa from Brazil. She arrives in the early hours of Friday morning and everyone is welcome at the airport to greet her. She has been emailing Peter and she is very excited about the forthcoming year. Peter and Jacqui will be her first hosts and I am sure that we are all looking forward to meeting her. Many of you would be aware of the dreadful floods in the Philippines earlier this year where thousands of people lost their homes and many lost their lives. The request for help went out from our District and our Board is keen to assist. We will be providing assistance through Shelter Box. Another way that we can show that we care! Tonight’s Guest Speakers are John and Frances Walton. John is a member of the Rotary Club of Heidelberg and is a former Chair of the District International Service Committee. However he and Frances will not be discussing this tonight – they will be speaking about their very special work with Refugees from West Papua. Some of you may have read the article about them last year in The Weekend Australian Magazine. John and Frances have been doing this work for a number of years and they have a very interesting story to tell. By showing that they care, John and Frances are certainly doing their bit to change the world. With so much happening in the International Service area, I would hope that all members participate in some way to show that the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek does indeed care, and our small contribution, can indeed make the world a better place. what happened last week ? (wasn't it a long time ago)

President Alan Jones opened the meeting and welcomed visiting Rotarian from Nepal, Ram Prasad Joshi . DGE John Gatt and Eileen visited the Rotary Club of Yea Art Show and brought back with them a bottle of Port for the members to try and buy, in aid of the conference wine sales.

PP Pat Millar, PP Alan White and Alan Jones attended the Australia Day Awards at Nillumbik Council where the lady who has been assisting quadriplegic Josh Wood in his endeavors to establish a program to encourage ambulation in those with spinal injuries, received an award.

DGE John Gatt advised the club that Brad Quilliam received the Murrindindi Shire Citizen of the Year award .

Alan Jones reminded members that there will not be a meeting at Ashton Manor next week, as it will be a scatter night where all members will attend other clubs. Members are asked to advertise our club’s20th Birthday celebrations when they attend other clubs.

This Saturday the Food Handler’s Course will be held at the Diamond Valley Baptist Church starting at 9am

The BBQ for the opening of the Diamond Valley Stadium will commence at 11am, all helping please arrive at 10.30m.

Alan Jones called for feedback regarding the new Polo shirts for the club.

The Diamond Creek Primary School shade sails project is well underway with poles being erected by a contractor and should be finished in about ten days.

Chairperson David Palermo then introduced Speakers from the L2P program, Neil Smith and Lachlan. Lachlan is a 17 year old secondary College student who qualified for the program. L2P has been established to provide mentored driving supervision in a council vehicle for young learner drivers needing to increase their hours of supervised driving prior to gaining their Driver’s license. Those who qualify are the financially

disadvantaged and those without access to a car or supervisory driver.

My Rotary Friends, I'll be participating in a 2-day major cycling event called The Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre on the 27th and 28th October 2012. I'll be cycling over 200kms that weekend, throughout the scenic Victoria, with thousands of other Riders. All the proceeds will go to Peter Mac, the only public hospital in Australia solely dedicated to cancer. I've agreed to raise at least $2,500.
