Blast from the past - the year 2008-2009 RI President : Dong Kurn Lee President: Alan White
Rotarians and friends, I have followed Past President Linda Gidlund in the continued implementation of the Club Leadership Plan. The continuity of office bearers is one of the obvious benefits of the CLP. We no longer have to reinvent the wheel each year. Directors and Chairmen can see the development and completion of their projects through our long term planning.
Our club has been exceptionally active in all avenues of service this year. I had been told that the second half of the year would be just a coast to the finish line,… but the horrific bushfires on Black Saturday made us busier than ever. Many Rotarians in our club volunteered at Whittlesea, Wallan and Diamond Creek in the early days. We established our own Bush Fire Fund for use in Nillumbik Shire and the adjacent townships as well as contributing to the District Bushfire Fund.
We helped the Diamond Creek Traders in their efforts at the Dive In Movie night. We joined with the other clubs in Zone 1 to have a Bushfire Benefit in Alistair Knox Park at Eltham and to provide a sausage sizzle for the Ulysses Club at Whittlesea. The administration of the RCDC Bush Fire Fund, under chair of PDG Rob Lloyd, will be ongoing, at least, for the next few years. We will distribute over $60,000.00. While we have been able to make several urgent payments to date, there is still much to be done as the townships are rebuilt and the communities re-established.

It is significant that in the lead up to our 20th Birthday, that we start to think about the future of our club and poten al growth and expansion in areas close by. If the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek is to grow and develop, all of us will need to be like the turtle and “s ck our necks out” at some me. Growth and Development will lead us in so many new direc ons. But we will not achieve anything without our current members contribu ng to this growth. As I have said so many mes this year, Rotary is about so much more than just weekly mee ngs. Growth and Development of our club will bring us new members. Already in this Rotary year, we have inducted four new members and we have two more awai ng induc on. Given that we have had others show interest in our club, we may be able to induct two or three more before the end of the Rotary year. Addi onal members bring us so much: ‐ enthusiasm, fresh ideas, eagerness, new networks, different skills and more. But developing membership is not just about more members, it is also about expanding and extending the skills of our exis ng members. We can do this, again, by being like the turtle, and s cking our necks out. Just because you have been a Rotarian for a number of years, does not mean that you can’t learn more, or if you do have considerable knowledge and skills, impart them to others. By increasing our skills and knowledge, we can take on more projects and assist a greater number of people in both our local and the interna onal community. Development can mean change too. Looking at new ideas, and opening our minds to different concepts will also enhance our club. To do this, some mes we need to step outside our comfort zones and do more, par cipate in addi onal ways
and contribute beyond what we ever thought possible. We need to broaden our horizons – and look outside Diamond Creek. I am sure that the popula on of Diamond Creek are well aware that there is a Rotary Club here thanks to the fabulous Town Fair. But what about the neighbouring areas of Plenty, St Helena, Yarrambat, Wa le Glen and others? Surely we can tap into these areas for expansion in order to spread the Rotary word. Thanks to Ern, we are about to sponsor a new Probus Club in Doreen. Is that an area where we can tap into future Rotarians? Looking at their demographics suggest that it could be. Just as there could well be other poten al Rotarians in other close by areas that I have men oned. Some of our Club members mentored the recently formed Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges. If we were to acquire a number of new members from any of these areas it would be a perfect me to start a new club. Many of our members would be able to advise and support this new club. So let us think about the future of our club and how we can grow and develop in the forthcoming years. And if the only way to make progress is to be like the turtle, then let us all s ck our necks out! Alan Jones
from the president keeping up with the joneses! “Behold the turtle. He only makes progress when he s cks his neck out.” – James Bryant Conant, former president of Harvard
