Visual Art Programme Preview Visual Art Programme Preview

Linda Shevlin has been appointed 2014 Curator in Residence with Roscommon County Council. As part of this residency, Linda is curating a series of exhibitions, events, talks and commissions at Roscommon Arts Centre, intended to actively engage with the general public, as well as interest groups. This year’s visual programme at the centre aims to create a dialogue between the diverse perspectives of the public, the artists and the local communities in the town and its surroundings. The residency has been made possible with the assistance of The Arts Council.

Alice Lyons & Orla McHardy“The Developers” is an experimental poetry project about Cootehall, the community and quiet rural village distinguished by a triangular field, the “church field”, in its centre.

That field and many more became the site of ghost estates that mushroomed in The Boom. This film creatively explores village life before, during and after The Boom in close-up and panoramic views, using poems, in dialogue together with moving images.

To mark the annual Lollipops Children’s Events taking place in October, the gallery will be given over to activities and exhibits for both young and old.

Parents, mothers, fathers and grandparents will be invited to spend time exploring contemporary art through interactivity and play!

Sean Lynch & Liam ByrneThrough “The Collectors” exhibition, Roscommon - based ephemera collector Liam Byrne will spend time with visual artist Sean Lynch, to contextualise his expansive collection of regionally related ephemera.

Collecting stories plays a huge role in Sean Lynch’s art practice, while Liam is the collector of the objects, relics and printed material that document similar stories.

The popular Elderberries dance class for over 50s returns for another sprightly spring season. The emphasis is on fun and with these gentle sessions you’ll improve strength, flexibility and balance. Are you a visual artist working in Roscommon? Would you like to meet, network and engage with other artists working in the county? The Roscommon Visual Artists Forum (working title) has been established to identify and act on the needs of visual artists working in the county and to empower working artists to develop their professional practices, through networked support and external professional development training. Working closely with Visual Artists Ireland (VAI), the national representational body for visual artists, the forum will respond directly to the needs of Roscommon artists or art collectives at all stages of their careers.

• A series of Professional Development Workshops on proposal writing, exhibition installation skills, targeted peer critiques and studio visits by curators.

• Regular social meetings to forge a strong network of active and engaged visual artists in the region, thus strengthening the national perception of the county.

Following his sold out performance last year Neil Delamere returns with a brilliant new show. “Smart Bomb” sees the star of BBC’s “The Blame Game” and RTE’s “The Panel” explains amongst other things, Ireland’s recession, eye patches and email viruses... but most probably not in that order.

Celebrating 55 years on the road, the launch of his new album and following sell out success last year, “The Man with the Golden Trumpet” returns with his Anniversary Tour. Belting out the hits from big bands to rock ‘n roll with a bit of trad thrown in, Johnny will be joined by “Say You Love Me” singing legend Dessie O’Halloran for what is sure to be a night packed with music, song and stories.

Leader of the Irish Chamber Orchestra, violinist Katherine Hunka formed an accordion and violin duo with Dermot Dunne in 2007. Since then they have toured extensively playing everything from Baroque to Piazzolla. One of Ireland’s most sought after and versatile double bassists, Malachy Robinson is a member of the ICO and the Crash Ensemble, with whom he performs a great deal of baroque music. Together with Dermot he is a founding member of Lunfardia, a band performing South American music throughout Ireland.

For this concert these three performers come together for an informal evening of Baroque, South American, Klezmer and film classics. With a relaxed, informal style, this promises to be an evening packed with plenty of chat and musical gems.

For one week each autumn, Mick Dowd is hired to disinter the bones in his local cemetery, making way for new arrivals. As the time approaches for him to dig up those of his late wife, strange rumours regarding his own involvement in her sudden death begin to resurface.

Part of “The Leenane Trilogy”, this is one of McDonagh’s funniest plays and with Decadent’s inimitable depiction, this production will have you laughing out loud, squirming in your seats and possibly avoiding graveyards!

Whether we’re crossing the street on red or skydiving for kicks, we live in a world of calculated risk, walking the line between feeling alive and staying alive. For many young people personal safety is simply not on their list. But if they don’t take a risk how else can they discover their limits or find out who they truly are? Told through a series of monologues, members of RCYT explore these questions and more, through dance, text and narrative. Suitable for 13+.

The Story of Joe DolanAfter he becomes a quadriplegic from a paragliding accident, an aristocrat hires a young man from the projects to be his caretaker. Initially offering him a trial period of one month to gain experience helping him, Driss accepts the challenge and moves to the mansion, changing the boring life of Phillipe and his employees forever.

Funny, tender and at times downright daft, “The Man in the Woman’s Shoes” is a charming encounter with a man who has a boundless enthusiasm for life.

“Faith” tells the story of Michael, a man trying to cope with the stresses of redundancy and a new role as a stay-at-home husband. He meets a charismatic friend who gives him new hope and a new job. Guarding an empty office block, they while away the hours with daredevil tricks, impromptu games of football and sorting out the meaning of life.

But his new-found optimism and low-paid employment don’t wash at home. He soon finds himself with a serious dilemma. The scene is set for confrontation between Michael’s responsibilities at home and the survival of his sense of self, even his sanity.

Darkly comic, “Faith” is an exploration of one man’s struggle to find himself in post-recession Ireland.
