We expect 2003 to be a great year as well, but it will bring a change in our staff. After nearly 30 years at UGA, Jim Trieschmann has decided to retire in June. We are actively recruiting for a new assistant professor. Perhaps not surprisingly given the RMI program’s reputation, interest in this position has been very high and we have received applications from across the U.S. and from as far away as Germany and the UK. A reception for Dr. Trieschmann will be held later this spring. UGA at RIMS Night will be hosted again this year by Willis. Risk Management and Insurance at Terry has become a focal point of many articles discussing undergraduate and graduate education in the field. As such, Business Insurance recently inserted in its October 14, 2002 publication a 2002 Guide to Risk Management and Insurance Schools. RMI at Terry was ranked as being the largest rogram in the U.S. with over 250 undergraduate majors in Fall 2002.

he annual U.S. News and World Report rankings also were published. The program ontinues to rank among the top five in the nation from the perspectives of quality of ducation and instruction, research by professors, and overall industry reputation. The tieor 3rd with Wisconsin was a jump of two slots from the previous ranking.

RMI Program Improves

In the combined category of insurance and real estate, the Terry College was second only to the Wharton School. “Not too bad,” according to Dr. Rob Hoyt.

In a recent study of facultyresearch productivity, Insurance professor Dr. James Trieschmann alongwith former Terry College Dean Al Niemi and two other co-authors ranked the top business schools by discipline. In the combined category of insurance and real estate, the Terry College was second only to the Wharton School. “Not too bad,” according to Dr. RobHoyt. RMI professors David Sommer and Steven Pottier were awarded a

Journal of Insurance Regulation research grant of $5000. Their research is seen as shedding new light “on a contemporary or forward-looking regulatory problem or issue.” Drs. Pottier and Sommer are seeking to explain the decline of life insurers financial strength ratings. This grant is further evidence of the research accomplishments of Drs. Pottier and Sommer, who have been published numerous times in variousscholarly journals.

Dr. Hoyt and doctoral candidate Andre Liebenberg completed a study in September 2002 regarding the new positionof Chief Risk Officer. This study was supported by the Terry College Center for Enterprise Risk Management, the Conference Board of Canada, and Tillinghast.

Alumnus Spotlight: Connie Guy By Dr. Jim Trieschmann

T his issue of our alumni newsletter highlights a special Guy - no not that kind of guy, Connie Guy. Connie is the Global Risk Manager for Riverwood International headquartered in Atlanta. Connie began her college stint at the University of Arkansas in 1971 and received her BBA from UGA in 1989 – that’s right, an 18-year four-year degree. Actually, Connie was a drop ut. She dropped out to ork and support her usband as he went to edical school, and then

here were the children, rane and Clair. In her final ndergraduate quarter at GA she took Ins 381

pon graduation she went o work for Turner roadcasting (just in time to elp the Braves win the orld Series). When not

elping the Braves, she was usy learning all of the ins nd outs of the “real” world f risk management. Some f her duties included esolving multi-million dollar tructured settlements, ndustry benchmarking, loss ontrol and due diligence on urner’s acquisition of anna-Barbera (cartoons), astle Rock and New Line inema and how to insure ar zones. During this eriod she worked with nother UGA RMI grad, rett Hellenga (BBA '81,

MBA '83). In 1997, she accepted a position with Motorola in Phoenix, Arizona. The opportunity arose from contacts she had made while doing due diligence onTurner’s business continuity preparedness planning. In a recent conversation with Connie she repeatedly emphasized the importance of networking and maintaining relationships within the risk management community. She noted that in order to advance you often need to move from one firm to another one and good networking helps make that possible. I might note that it is also comes in handy when firms are “right sizing”. Further, Connie continued her professional development pursuits and now holds both the CPCU and ARM designations. The world of Motorola was one of manufacturing and distribution versus the entertainment world of Turner. While at Motorola, she worked on Superfund litigation and global risk management issues. She gained invaluable experience in crisis and disaster management, and even helped established a joint program between

rizona State, Thunderbird niversity in conjunction ith the University of rizona on crisis and mergency risk anagement. Speaking of

rises, taking advantage of er networking activities onnie left Motorola right efore the “dot.com” bust nd the technology crisis

hat accompanied it.

5

In 1999, Connie joined Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Inc. in Phoenix. The firm is internationally renown in the field of hotels, resorts and timeshares. Many Starwood properties are household names - not under the Starwood banner but rather Sheraton, Westin, St. Regis and the boutique W Hotels. Managing a global risk program with hundreds of exposure units is extremely challenging and fulfilling. Connie had the opportunity to assist in designing and placing Starwood’s property program with total exposure in the billions. As careers tend to evolve and develop, it ultimately became her responsibility to ensure that all 700+ Starwood properties and franchises actually practiced what she preached. She became the risk administration officer overseeing insurance compliance and other contractual matters. Everything she ever learned in our capstone risk management course taught by Drs. Hoyt and/or Leverett, she put into practice – and then some. Over the years she provided an ample supply final exam questions and bizarre risk situations to the faculty. Although Phoenix has beautiful sunsets, its sunrises and resulting 115+ degree-days are another matter. Let’s just say she wasn’t a fan of

the desert. Connie has returned to Atlanta and is once again living and breathing all facets of “traditional” risk management. In July she accepted a senior position with Riverwood International and is currently learning her way around pulp and paper mills, converting plants (mainly soft drink and beer cartons) and a pesky exposure unit known as Black Liquor Recovery Boilers. Connie considers her return to Atlanta one of her greatest successes. It only took swapping risk at luxury hotels for a hard hat and a pair of steel-toed shoes. Connie wasted little time reconnecting with the Atlanta RIMS community; she is Chairperson for the Atlanta RIMS Educational Conference in January 2003. We wish her good luck and success. With her boundless enthusiasm we are sure she will be successful.

And the children? Currently,

lair is taking advantage of he Hope scholarship rogram and is a student at eorgia College and State niversity in Milledgeville. rane has just completed a outh activity program in outhern California known s the United States Marine orp. To date, neither child as expressed an interest in

ollowing in their mother’s ootsteps … but we’ll see. he pull of the UGA risk ommunity is strong.

Careers Day Attended by Record Number of Industry Players On February 5th, 2002, students spoke with a record number of industry professionals at the 25th Annual Risk and Insurance Careers Day. As noted, in the Spring 2002 Terry College Alumni Magazine, the increased participation was covered in the Athens and Atlanta papers as well as the Wall Street Journal. Each noted the strong industry participation despite the lagging economy. In these articles, both Dr. Hoyt and Bryan Tackett, an RMI student from Savannah, were quoted.

Our hope is for even more industry participants for Careers Day on February 4th, 2003.

Internship Program Expands

Eighty-five RMI students were selected as interns with various companies for Summer 2002. Interns worked for companies ranging from personal lines carriers to major regional and national brokers to risk management departments in Fortune 500 companies. Geographically, many students remained in the Southeast. Major metro areas such as Chicago, Boston, Denver, San Francisco and Washington, DC were home to RMI interns. All of the interns found their experiences useful to comprehending critical aspects of the industry and trends in the

arketplace. Many were able to gain degree credit through their experience. hile a majority of the interns in the RMI program are hosted in summer, some students are able to intern during

he Spring and Fall as well. f you are interested in learning more about our internship program, please contact the Internship Coordinator, Dr.avid Sommer at 706.542.5160 or [email protected].
