During his internship, Patrick worked on significant projects within the Specialty Equipment Services and the Agribusiness divisions. “The various experiences and opportunities I have had within the insurance program at ISU helped me succeed throughout the summer,” he said. “The relationship and technical skills I have acquired through the insurance program prepared me for the internship experience.” Meagan Stenger, insurance and risk management major, spent a summer at the corporate headquarters of Medical Protective in Fort Wayne, IN, as an underwriting intern. “I had a large hands on project that involved me reviewing over 1,700 policies and rating each one based on the ISO codes,” she said. “The level of knowledge I gained in my internship surpassed any amount of knowledge I could gain in the classroom. While I believe being in class and focused is an integral part for a foundation in the insurance industry, I firmly believe that a meaningful internship will help students apply the skills learned in the class and connect them with the real world.”

Insurance and Risk ManagementAs a premier undergraduate program in Insurance and Risk Management, students are prepared for leadership roles in their professional careers. The Insurance and Risk Management Program is a direct result of partnerships with those in the industry. Students network with industry representatives through internships and real-world experience, and they are prepared to enter the industry as insurance professionals after graduation. The Scott College of Business’ Insurance and Risk Management Program began its path toward distinction in 1988. Through development of a rigorous curriculum, significant partnerships with industry leaders, and a strong commitment to experiential learning beyond the classroom, we have become nationally known as a premier undergraduate program.

Student InvolvementThere are multiple opportunities to be involved and network with industry professionals through the Insurance and Risk Management Program. Gamma Iota Sigma is a professional organization at ISU for insurance and risk management students. The organization offers opportunities to travel to multiple professional conferences as well as offers industry speakers, networking, and community service opportunities. The Leader in Action event each year offers an opportunity to hear from a current executive in the insurance industry. The Risk Manager in Residence is hosted each spring with special class sessions, roundtable discussions, and an open forum. The annual Golf Outing allows students the opportunity to spend time with industry professionals on the golf course while also networking. An excess and surplus lines course offered every other year offers the opportunity to travel to London and visit with Lloyd’s of London and other insurance organizations in the U.K.

ScholarshipsStudents majoring in insurance and risk management at ISU are eligible as incoming freshmen for the Gongaware and Networks scholarships. Both are full in-state tuition scholarships valued at $40,000 over four years and include a $3,000 professional development account.

There are also several scholarships designated specifically for insurance and risk management majors and minors with over $35,000 awarded annually. For more information on scholarship, go to: www.indstate.edu/business/scholarships.

CurriculumInsurance and Risk Management majors complete 9 courses in insurance and risk management in addition to the business core courses. Courses include 6 required courses:• Introduction to Risk and Insurance• Life Insurance• Commercial Property Risk Management and

Insurance• Commercial Liability Risk Management and

Insurance • Employee Benefits• Risk Management and Insurance

Students select 3 elective courses from health insurance, financial planning, insurance operations, insurance internship, professional selling, and other courses. Many students elect to complete an internship or experiential learning opportunity as an elective for credit. Insurance minors complete 5 or 6 courses in insurance and risk management, depending on courses already completed. A two-year degree completion program via distance education is also offered that appeals to the busy professional.
