} RINA major ferry safety initiative newsletter of the rina group RINA @WORK RINA has launched a major ferry safety initiative. The Asset Integrity Management scheme for ro-pax ferries covers fire risk mitigation, single-failure risk assessment, enhanced planned maintenance and condition-based monitoring and also food and bacteriological risk management; the initiative covers also specific training for ro-pax crews, including behavioural training to avoid and manage crises. Over 300 ferries in RINA class give RINA a lot of experience and feedback from vessels in service. As the class of choice for these types of vessel RINA is showing a lead in safety standards which go beyond regulatory basics. RINA’s package of initiatives builds on its recent work with major cruise and ferry operators to extend tailored risk management services to the marine industry. Extending targeted risk-management to ro-pax operation will bring benefits for operators in efficiency and will help operators to reduce specific and commonly agreed risk levels and minimize the consequences in case an accident occurs on their vessels in operation. RINA will lead a round table on ro-pax ferries with major operators, shipowners’ associations and the Italian administration with the aim of developing an amendment to SOLAS to lift standards for all ro-pax vessels and operations. Specific parts of the ro-pax package are a fire risk identification and mitigation service, a series of training courses for crews and shore staff which focus on teamwork and behaviour in a crisis, and a service to identify and mitigate the risk of any single failure impacting the ship and its operations severely. There is also a focus on condition-based monitoring and enhanced and targeted planned maintenance and a bacteriological risk assessment and mitigation service. Nor-Shipping takes place as spring is turning into full summer.

Everything in nature is working together to produce growth. That’s how RINA sees its relationships with our clients. We are there to bring everything together and focus on strong and healthy growth.

We take in the ideas and projects and problems of our clients and use our energy to turn them into enduring solutions. That is why major owners are moving ships to our class and why we respond to our leadership in passenger ships by helping owners get the best from their fleets.

Growing numbers of ships in service are being moved into RINA class by North European owners seeking improved and more personal service. Eighty vessels totalling 400,000 GT were moved to RINA class by owners in north Europe in 2014, and over thirty vessels have so far been added this year. The vessels are modern oil tankers, bulk carriers and ro-ro passenger vessels from leading owners in Denmark, Germany, Finland, Norway, Poland, Sweden and the Netherlands. Dutch owners have also placed five new building orders, for a semi-submersible and four supply vessels, with RINA class, all of them to be built in the Netherlands.Reasons given for the transfer of class from local bodies to RINA are usually that RINA is able to give a more personal service which more closely identifies with the owner’s needs, plus access to tailored services which improve efficiency.

Italy’s leading cruise ferry operator Moby S.p.A. and fast ferry operator Grandi Navi Veloci have chosen RINA InfoSHIP EGO to manage fuel and energy use and emissions monitoring for fast ro-pax vessels in their fleets. InfoSHIP EGO is part of the ship management software suite developed in cooperation with IB Software & Consulting. InfoSHIP Ego has a number of modules which collect data on board the ship automatically from navigation and machinery automation systems. The data can then be analysed for trim optimization, propulsion efficiency, voyage and fuel management, overall energy management and decision management. As the software can be customized to the particular operator’s needs it can easily be set up to provide all the data needed to meet the requirements of the EU Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) scheme.

Michiel Zwagerman is the third generation of his family running offshore crane specialist Zwagerman International. He is responsible for the offshore operations, their shipyard and managing Conquest Offshore, a joint venture which operates a unique 1,400 tonne SWL crane barge.

“A lot of knowledge and experience went into designing and building Conquest MB1” says Michiel. “It is a universal vessel with opportunities in offshore construction, wreck removal and offshore decommissioning.”

The crane barge is being upgraded with a motion-compensated pile gripper for wind turbine installation and a 1,000 tonne hydraulic grab which can lift large chunks of wrecks.

“There is a lot of capability in the vessel” explains Michiel.

“We can deliver it at a sensible daily rate because the vessel is built in a modular way based on a proven concept, so it is cost efficient. As each job is different we have to ensure the crane can operate in the local dynamic environment and meet all the rules. That is why we work with RINA, they do the calculations quickly and are willing to understand and work with European and any local requirements.”

Norwegian oil major Statoil recently entrusted D’Appolonia with the laboratory testing and reporting for a major deepwater geotechnical investigation for development of reserves in Block 2 offshore Tanzania. Benthic Geotech was in charge of field operations. Subsea field work was performed using Benthic’s PROD2 remotely operated seabed drill. The project was a major success. Boreholes were drilled, soil samples collected and in-situ penetration tests performed in record water depths. The results of the survey provide the geologic and geotechnical data required to enable Statoil to plan future developments.

RINA’s consulting engineering company D’Appolonia has delivered significant services for the first FPSO to be built for Barents Sea service. The FPSO is designed for operations under the challenging conditions of the Barents Sea and introduces new winterisation systems. It is equipped to meet the strict local environmental requirements.D’Appolonia provided analysis and assessment of the lifetime inspection plan, which is built on Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) methodology, on behalf of operator Eni Norge. D’Appolonia went on to provide verification of the design, fabrication and installation (DFI) manuals of the FPSO. This year D’Appolonia verified and developed the internal document of Eni Norge that defined the inspection plan to be followed upon the arrival of the FPSO in Norway after the transportation from the building yard in South Korea.
