● Regardless of the robotic locomotion system (mobile, fixed, land, air, sea,
subsea…) and application, all robotic systems are moving towards increased
levels of autonomous functionality.
● Until recently robotics within O&G has very much been focused on hardware
and held at teleoperation method of control with limited supervisory capacity for
inspection & /or detection applications.
● Remedial action after inspection / detection will require some form of
manipulation
- Task complexity / dexterity required will dictate which system of control
● Robotics should be considered as part of a wider system
- Robots will only be as effective as the quality of their surrounding infrastructure

RIMA Seminar 5th February
● Increase in autonomous functionality
● Multi Purpose robotic platforms
- Routine Inspection & Emergency Response
● Stair climbing
● All have manipulation in future plans
● What else do they have in common?
● Multiple Robots - Simpler task specific design
- Smaller, Lighter, Easier to certify

HAZARDOUS AREAS
Defined by likelihood of presence of explosive atmosphere in
normal operations. Spilt into Zones.
Wireless battery operated systems must have a certified design
able to contain ignition source.
All equipment not certified to zone 1 must S/D on confirmed gas.
Hot Work Permit acceptable for
PoC but not for continued
operations

DESIGN WITH EVOLUTION IN MIND
Technology Readiness Level (TRL)
The TRL scale is used to rate the maturity of a technology
from idea (TRL1) to large=scale industrial implementation (TRL9)

● Maintenance after inspection / detection will require some form of manipulation
- Task complexity / dexterity required will dictate which system of control
● RIMA should give equal focus to the ‘M’ and the ‘I’
● Advance manipulation capabilities for different locomotion systems (UGV, UAV)
● Synergy with nuclear industry who are more advanced in this field
- Haptics / Force Feedback Control
MANIPULATION
RIMA Seminar 5th February
10
● Need for continued production with no vessel / tank shutdowns
● Solutions that negate the requirement for vessel preparatory work
- Isolations, scaffolding etc
● Navigation around vessel externals / accessability is an issue
● 100% coverage required
● Cross industry synergy
