This last weekend, the Orienthills were full of shooters!The South Dakota Steel Clas-

sic was held near Orient Satur-day and Sunday, May 5 and 6 forthe fourth year in a row. Therewere targets anywhere from 100to 1,240 yards with 25 stages

and 250 rounds per shooter. Theshooting focuses on being practi-cal in nature, and having a hunt-ing or military type applicationover the two day shoot.The Classic is open to 120 par-

ticipants. This year in Orientthere were 117 who were able to

attend from Texas, Oklahoma,Utah, Iowa, Colorado, Wyoming,Minnesota, Wisconsin and SouthDakota. The first match of theyear long season starts the endof January with finals held thefirst weekend in December. Topshooters from across the country

vie for points to win top moneyprizes up to $70,000. Orient’sshoot is one of 40 matches acrossthe United States, and the onlynational one in South Dakota.The Classic is dubbed “TheNascar of Shooting Sports”.For more photos see page 11.

damage to both the digital pro-jector and the computer serverdue to electrical damage.Last fall when the theatre was

shut down the equipment wasshut off to the breaker andbreaker box so that there was noelectric connection to the equip-ment. On April 30, the servicetech who does the per-season an-nual inspection discovered sub-stantial damage to theequipment and felt that it wasdone when there was a lightingstrike near the building. Thedamage was caused when the

Faulk County Clerk of Courts foralmost one year now. She startedin June of 2017, and is part time,Monday through Friday after-noons from 1 to 5 p.m. She re-

placed retired Clerk of CourtsMarilyn Hadrick, who worked asthe clerk for 20+ years.Stephanie is a 2009 Aberdeen

Central graduate, attended North-ern State University for sociology.She is presently taking online col-

lege courses for court reporting.Her parents are Steve and MarieDen Ouden of Aberdeen, and shehas one sister. The Erdahls (hus-band Kyle is the sixth gradeteacher at Faulkton Elementary)moved here in 2016 from Aberdeen.

Her previous employment wasworking at Volunteers of Americaas a group facilitator; and inPlankinton at Avera Plains Acad-emy, a juvenile treatment facility.

The Faulkton City Councilmet on Monday, May 7 for theirregular meeting. All councilmembers were present, LindaBartholomew, Mark Toennies,Sheilah Fischer, Steve Wanner,Dan Ramsdell and Chris Geiger,along with maintenance JerodRaethz and finance officer EmilyBauer. Also in attendance wereKen Thompson, Grady Jolley;Faulkton Area Economic Devel-opment Corporation members,Dwight Hossle, BrandonSpanier, Gloria Bode, BeverlyKing, Kelly Melius and TroyHadrick.Minutes of the April 9 meet-

ing, financial report and claimswere approved.Jerod Raethz began by report-

ing that de winterization is al-most complete, as in parkrestrooms, the mosquito sprayerand the pool are ready for thesummer. There will be newgarbage cans placed aroundtown, and there are some newbanners and brackets - those willbe put up sometime soon. Raethzstated that they have used therecently purchased new broomand are very pleased with the re-sults.The mayor had no report and

Brent Koens could not be pres-ent so there was no police reportbut all council members hadbeen given copies of the report.For old business there were

pay requests, $1,000 for admin-istration fee to Helms & Associ-ates and $15,102.05 for theengineer on-site; and $43,270.55to Dahme Construction.Raethz stated that Dahme’s

has a second crew in town work-ing on the sewer project - thatcrew has started on Court Streetand this will last a couple ofmore days. The first crew is on12th Ave. with 70% of that workfinished. The crew will thenbegin at the 4-H barns cornerthen to St. John Street. Dahme’swill have a meeting to updatethe council on Friday, May 11 at3 p.m. The public is invited to at-tend. Raethz ended with “streetconditions are what they are.”Excess dirt was then discussed.Council will find out who ownsthe dirt, Dahme’s or the city. Sev-eral people have asked for thedirt.The council also approved pay

requests for the airport environ-mental assessment of $1,717.98,this is ongoing and is now 52%complete billed from Helms &Associates. The council also ap-proved the cultural resources in-ventory amendment of$4,260.00, 95% of this amountwill be paid back to the city. Anywork done to the airport, all proj-ects will be reimbursed by thestate and the FFA.

The well at the sports complexwas discussed and will be dugsometime in the future. Thecity’s water fund will help pay forthis along with monies left overfrom the ball park project. It isprojected having the well at theball park will pay for itself in twoto three years. Raethz said thatthe city’s water system is main-taining now, however in the next10 to 15 years the next majorproject will be moving the stor-age tank to the new water toweralong with all the pumps.There were no bids for the old

mower so council decided to justkeep the mower and use it.For new business, oath of of-

fice was given to Mayor SladeRoseland, council presidentSheilah Fischer and Mark Toen-nies.It was noted for the new year’s

appointments, for now the onlychanges made were DougWittmeier’s responsibilities weregiven to Chris Geiger.Motion passed by the council

to continue with Sheilah Fischeras president and Chris Geiger asvice president.There was a question from the

Faulkton Area Medical Centerabout a brown bag permit andinflatables for a picnic at the citypark. Emily will get back tothem. Council only thought theyneeded to sign a waiver about li-ability with the inflatables.Council continued the agree-

ment with the FAMC water aer-obics to hold classes at the pool.Grady Jolley then handed out

a flyer on his priorities as sheriffif elected and touched briefly ona scholarship idea. He thankedthe council for their time.Next up was the Faulkton

Area Economic Developmentmembers. They stated they werethere to give the council infor-mation about the director’s posi-tion and what his job entails.Troy Hadrick, Dwight Hossleand Kelly Melius all gave infor-mation about how important it isfor Faulkton to continue theprogress they have made in thelast five years. It was stated theyhave already visited with thecounty commissioners and arelooking for funds of up to$100,000 for this position (1/2from the county and 1/2 from thecity). They noted that greatthings have been accomplishedby having a full time develop-ment director. The membersthanked the council for theirtime and hoped they would studythe notes about what has beenaccomplished in Faulkton thatthey handed out to the councilmembers.For Resolution 2018-03 council

approved to vacate an alley be-tween the county shop and Dar-rel Johnson home.Resolution 2018-04 the council

approved exclusion of propertyfrom city limits owned by KenThompson north of town by thecreek.Council then approved the

DOT transportation alternativeagreement for the sidewalk proj-ect, to begin next summer.Council approved malt bever-

age license renewals, on-off salemalt beverage and on-off saleSouth Dakota Farm wine of

nis Daugaard, the AssociatedSchool Boards of South Dakotainvited more than 200 students,who were identified as the topone percent of their senior class,from the state’s public, privateand tribal schools, to celebratetheir academic accomplishments. “Today we celebrate excellence

and this is what it looks like,”ASBSD President Todd Thoelkesaid of the students in atten-dance. “It’s an extraordinary

group of students in this room. Agroup we hope become the nextgeneration of leaders in SouthDakota.”Gov. Daugaard reiterated

Thoelke’s sentiment by encour-aging the students to considerSouth Dakota as the place tomake their dreams come true.“Consider South Dakota as a

What a nice day it is this Mon-day morning, April 30. The sunis shining and the residents arehappy to be up and swingingtheir limbs to the familiarwarmup tunes. Afterwards theytossed the ball to each other andsometimes just kick it.The afternoon fun was bingo

with Joyce and John. Theypicked numbers 29 and 30 forfree numbers. It was for the endof the month and also someone’sbirthday. After several winnerswith bingo bucks given out weplayed blackout. Three yelledblackout all at once, JoyScheller, Sylvia Hoffman andAgnes Ireland. Second placewinners were Minnie Ryman,Terrie Mehlhaff and Carol Raba,which meant plenty of bucks forJohn to hand out.Hooray! Hooray! It’s the first

Major Changes -Entering Livestock in 4-HThe require-

ments for enter-ing livestock in4-H have changedthis year. Here isa list of changes4-H families needto understand toparticipate in Achievement Daysand the South Dakota State Fairin 2018.

• 4-H families are now respon-sible for entering their animalson 4HOnline. This is required tobe done by June 1st. Entering an-imals in 4-H used to be done byfilling out an affidavit and turn-ing it in to the county office. Nowthese affidavits are available forunofficial use only. Unofficial af-fidavits can be used by families tocollect information since the in-formation on the affidavit is thesame information required to beentered on 4HOnline. Since live-stock exhibitors enter all the re-quired information online,nothing is turned in to the countyoffice.

• Initial weight for market an-imals is no longer required toshow at the State Fair, but NUEStagging requirements have re-mained the same. NUES tags canbe purchased at the county office.

• DNAhair sampling collectionis now the exhibitor’s responsi-

bility. This is required for allmarket animal participants plan-ning to exhibit at the State Fair.DNA sample envelopes and infor-mation on the proper procedurecan be picked up at the county of-fice and must be turned in byJune 1st.

• It is the exhibitor’s responsi-bility to upload a copy of breedregistration papers for registeredor purebred animals to 4HOnlineby July 1st. This includes pure-bred animals that are leased.

• Exhibitors with livestockthat is being leased need to fillout the South Dakota AnimalProjects Lease Form and uploadit to 4HOnline by June 1st.

• Youth for the Quality Care of

Animals (YQCA) training is nowrequired for all swine exhibitorsto participate at AchievementDays or the State Fair. Trainingswill be held Tuesday, May 22 andThursday, May 24 from 10 to 11a.m. at the courthouse. Youthonly need to participate in one ofthe two training options. Donnie Lerew, 77, ofSpearfish, passed away on Sun-day, May 6, 2018. As in life,Donnie closely followed hisbeloved wife, Sachiko, to theireternal home.

Memorial services will beheld at 9 a.m., Friday, May 11,at St. Paul Lutheran Church inSpearfish with burial with mil-itary honors to follow at BlackHills National Cemetery.

Donnie Dean Lerew was bornin Cresbard on March 8, 1941to Bernard and Virginia (Weg-ner) Lerew.

Donnie was born and raisedin Cresbard. Following highschool, he served in the AirForce as a mechanic, until hisrelease in the fall of 1965.

Donnie married Sachiko Na-gahiro at the US Consulate inFukuoka, Japan on April 30,1965. The couple settled inCresbard where they ownedthe grocery store. In 1982, theymoved to Spearfish where Don-nie started trucking until he re-tired in 2007.

Donnie was a member of St.Paul Lutheran Church and en-joyed spending time with hisfamily. He was especially de-voted to his grandchildren andenjoyed attending all of theirevents. Donnie also loved fish-ing with his friends and visit-ing with everyone who stoppedby to have alterations done byhis wife Sachiko.

He is survived by his twosons, Deon and Jessica Lerewand their children Daniel,Alyssa, Nelson and Preston ofDickinson, ND, Donovan andCherise Lerew and their chil-dren Chloe and Drayton ofSpearfish; and sisters Dorothy(John Rhine) of Cuba, Kan. andBeverly (Jerry Van Well) ofHenry.

He was preceded in death byhis wife, Sachiko Lerew;brother, Melvin Lerew; sister-in-law, Donna Lerew; and par-ents, Bernard and Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, memorialsare being collected for SaintPaul Lutheran Church inSpearfish.

number of reasons. It was agreat day to run because we hadgreat weather for this trackmeet. The best reason, though,was that our kids had a reallygood day running,” said apleased Coach Chad Spicer.“This is one of the tougher

meets because of all the class Aschools we get to run against,along with some very good classB schools. We had a relay thatqualified for state. The medleyrelay ran a time of 3:50.6 whichqualified this relay for state.The members of this relay areDerek Heitmann, James Bowar,Gannon Martinmaas, and An-drew Sorensen. Our boys 1600relay team also knocked offabout four seconds off our sea-son’s best time. Kaden Lee tookhome first place in the 110 and300 hurdles. His time in the 300hurdles was a personal best,”continued the coach.“Our girls’ relays also had a

fantastic day. The girl’s 1600relay knocked 15 seconds offtheir season’s best time. Themedley relay knocked about 12seconds off the season’s besttime. The 800 relay also did verywell. These three relays con-sisted of the same four girls,MorganMelius, Abby Vetch, Pey-ton Melius, and GraceSchlechter. We had two girls,Morgan and Kayla Senn, placein the long jump. Peyton Meliusplaced third in the high jump,”

“We had six individuals repre-sent the Faulkton School at theHowardWood Relays. They wereJames Bowar, Kaden Lee, Gan-non Martinmaas, Nathan Vetch,Derek Heitmann and AndrewSorensen. Kaden competed inthe 110 and 300 hurdles. Gan-non competed in the 100 and 400dashes. We took two relays, themedley relay which consisted ofDerek, James, Gannon and An-drew and the 1600 relay teamwhich consisted of Derek, Kaden,Nathan, and Gannon,” saidCoach Spicer.“We did not have any place

winners, but we did pretty well.Kaden qualified for state in the300 hurdles with a personal bestrun of 43.16. Gannon ran a per-sonal best in the 400 with a timeof 53.5. Our relay also ran an-

other state qualifying time. Un-fortunately, the meet was calleddue to inclement weather beforeour boys could compete in the1600 relay,” continued the coach.“We did improve upon some of

our times, but we have muchwork to do to make sure we staycompetitive with the teams inour region. We have a very toughregion and I believe that if wecontinue to improve we have achance to take some relay teamsto state,” concluded CoachSpicer.

Some of the contestants using their spotting scopes to either meas-ure the distance to help with their strategy or to see how another con-testant is doing.

Competitors are either relaxing or strategizing, while waiting for their turn at one of the stages during dayone of the two-day competition. Day one, at each stage, the competitor has two minutes to shoot 10 roundsplus working in five different positions with also the challenge of different tasks to figure out. On day two thetime is cut to a minute and a half with all the obstacles of day one but a little more added challenge.

Grady Heitmann and MonteSteinbrecher, NRCS staff andKris Meyer, District Secretary.The presentation given was

students playing a game called“Every Tree For Itself”. The ob-ject of the game was for the“trees” which were the studentsto gather as many of the threecolored chips as they could. Bluerepresented water, red repre-sented sunlight, and white rep-resented nutrients. Did eachstudent pick up enough of theright colored chips to survive ayear and to have good growth??Students also learned aboutshelterbelt formation and how toplant a tree.

Each students was given a Black Hills Spruce tree.

PortugalMrs. Maria Azevedo got to do

so much more than just be a para-professional in the second gradeclassroom this year. She got toshare her Portuguese culture withthe students as they learned aboutdifferent cultures and traditions inSocial Studies. She taught thekids how to make PortugueseSweet Bread and even let each ofthem knead the bread dough. Thenext day she brought so manyPortuguese sweets including thebread they helped with which thekids really enjoyed. Mrs. Azevedogave a special presentation bring-ing clothes and pictures of herfamily and taught them to speakher language. The kids were soamazed that one of their teachersdidn’t have the same culture asthey did, but, was just like them. Itwas a great experience for them!

The City of Faulkton will docurbside pickup of white goodsand branches on Friday, May 11.Call the City Office at 598-6515 to havethese items taken to the rubble site.

Faulkton has now returned to regular summer rubblesite hours which are: Mondays 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.;Wednesdays 3 - 7 p.m.; Fridays 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.; Sat-urdays 9 a.m. - 12 noon and from 1 - 5 p.m.; and Sun-days 1 - 6 p.m.
