T he force for positive change is within us all. Famous humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers referred to it as the

“actualising tendency” – our innate desire for growth and development.

And whilst there has been an ever increasing thirst for knowledge as to peak performance and optimal human development, it wasn’t until the Positive Psychology movement emerged in thelate 1990s that the science allowed us to identify the essential psychological needs we all have and strategies we can take to increase our overall well-being.

Positive Psychology is thescience of optimal humanfunctioning – for individuals,groups, teams, organisations,communities and society.

The science of Positive Psychology is now close to 20 years old and merging with fields like Neuroscience, Medicine, Education, Economics and Business.

The research base, whilst growing, is full to the brim with possibilities for applications in the real world! Those who were the brave pioneers have already gathered some evidence to attest to its benefits.

The Positivity Institute was created and launched with the aim to bring this science to life and to continue as an “Institute” to investigate and add to the knowledge base of Positive Psychology. Our aim is to create flourishing lives and increase the wellbeing of the world. In our profession, this is known as a BHAG – a big, hairy, audacious goal. We hope you can join us in some way to attain this goal!

Meet Our Team

S uzy is a leader in the fields of Coaching Psychology and Positive Psychology. Suzy lectured on Applied Positive Psychology at the University of Sydney

for ten years and is an Honorary Vice President of the International Society for Coaching Psychology. Suzy is an Official Ambassador for the Starlight Children’s Foundation and an Honorary Research Fellow of the Black Dog Institute. Our PI Work Team are scientist-practitioners with extensive organisational experience. All PI Coaches are

A Proactive Approach

T he Global Council for Happiness and Wellbeing (2019 Policy report) found that there is a compelling business case for promoting worker wellbeing.

Their extensive research demonstrated a positive correlation between employee wellbeing and productivity at both individual and organisational levels. At the organisation level, strong positive links were seen between employee wellbeing and metrics such as customer satisfaction and staff turnover which directly impact profitability.

Further, in a survey conducted by PwC in 2014 it was found that organisations that implement effective actions to create a mentally healthy workplace, on average can expect positive return on investment of $2.30 for every $1 spent.

In a world first study on evidence based coaching by our founder Dr. Suzy Green, results

showed that a 12 week cognitive-behavioural solution focused coaching program increased goal attainment and psychological well-being. In a follow-up study, results showed that evidence based coaching also increased levels of hope and reduced levels of depression.

The findings suggest that meeting life’s challenges with a positive and confident attitude regarding ability or competence to survive life challenges appeared to insulate against depression.

Compelling research demonstrates that experiencing high levels of psychological wellbeing (i.e. ‘feeling good’) is associated with enhanced performance (i.e. ‘doing well’).

Mental health conditions present substantial costs to organisations.More and more organisations are looking to adopt a proactive

approach to mental health and wellbeing rather than relying solelyon an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) after issues arise.

Why Coaching?

T hree meta-analysis studies (Theeboom, Beersma @ van Vianen, 2014; Jones, Woods, & Guillaume, 2015; Sonesh et al., 2015) and one systematic review (Lai & McDowall, 2014) have provided evidence that coaching is effective. Collectively, these studies show that coaching has significant positive effects on performance, skills, well-being, coping, work

attitudes, and goal-directed self-regulation.

Resilience Coaching

The Resilience Coaching program is designed to help build resilience to better cope with the daily hassles, or more major challenges which can hold us back at work or in life. When we’re resilient, and have high levels of wellbeing, we not only feel better but we function more efficiently. This program will help to build the emotional agility and mental flexibility to respond adaptively and positively in the face of challenge and change. Our strengths based approach harnesses the coachee’s psychological capacities to build skills to bring their “best possible self” to work every day, further boosting wellbeing. Coaching supports the pursuit of personally meaningful goals that lead to increases in energy and contribute to personal and professional wellbeing.

Achievement Coaching

The Achievement Coaching program is designed to support the processes of meaningful goal striving and accomplishment - whether that’s a previously identified goal that’s been hard to reach or a goal that’s yet to be uncovered through the process of coaching. Coachees gain a deep understanding of their strengths of performance, and how to use them optimally to

fuel their motivation and levels of performance. When we align our roles and tasks with our performance strengths - goals are more easily reached, and roles are more energising and satisfying. Whilst a focus on achievement can come at the risk of burnout for some, this program balances the lifts in performance with high levels of wellbeing to ensure the coachee feels good and functions well whilst kicking goals at work.

Wellbeing Coaching

The Wellbeing Coaching program is for those who feel they’re not firing on all cylinders and want to do what it takes to be their best selves, every day, both at work and home. It will appeal to those who want to flourish in their lives, not just drift along or even languish. In this program we take an holistic approach as we know that when the key domains of life are going well, then feeling good and functioning well at work are much more likely. We help the coachee pinpoint the opportunities for the greatest wellbeing boost, and gain a picture of what life and work looks like as their best selves. The coachee is then supported to tailor goals and interventions that are authentic, energising and meaningful leading to high levels of wellbeing and a deeply satisfying life.

R evitalise Workplace Wellbeing Coaching is a program of coaching and support that can take place either over a three or six month period.

The 3-session coaching programs enable evaluation and reflection of a coachee’s current situation, and a deep understanding of self relevant to the stream selected (Resilience, Achievement or Wellbeing). Goals are then formed based on the outcomes required and plans are put in place for success.

The 6-session program continues and builds on this work by recruiting a coachee’s pre-existing psychological assets such as values and strengths of character to strongly support goal attainment. Coachees have an opportunity to test out actions between sessions and then evaluate and refine along the way, moving ever closer towards their best possible selves.

Positive change starts to occur and habits become embedded. There is an opportunity to re-evaluate success 3 months after the 5th coaching session, to help sustain change and ensure long term resilience, achievement or wellbeing.

Why Virtual Coaching?

Virtual coaching provides all the benefits of traditional face-to-face coaching, but uses today’s technology to make coaching more convenient and cost effective for you. Either by phone or using the video function of your phone, tablet or computer, you and your coach can build rapport and have collaborative coaching conversations, as if in the same room. It’s super-efficient with zero wasted travelling time or cost, and can be done at a time to suit you, no matter where you are in the world.
