All the courses are studied on a part-time basis.

How is the programme delivered? Most modules are delivered in an online learning environment and can be studied from any location via an internet-connected computer. To date, students have studied the course from more than 20 countries. Three modules (for the MSc) are delivered as three-day campus workshops in Nottingham. UK students are expected to attend workshops; international students may participate in the workshops or view recordings of the sessions in the online learning environment.

Do students usually continue to work while studying? Most students do, and the programme is designed for people who lead busy lives. We are aware that unforeseen events can impact upon the time available for study and this is reflected in the fact that there are only two assessment deadlines per year. There is

also a break of three-and-a-half months in the summer, between the first and second year of study (PG Dip and MSc only). Students unable to manage the study workload due to unforeseen domestic or professional challenges may suspend their studies for a year without incurring further fees.

What are the entry requirements?

Judith Grant (MSc Workplace Health and Wellbeing, graduated 2013) Group Head of Health and Wellbeing at Royal Mail Group

“Studying for the MSc in Workplace Health and Wellbeing not only enabled me to learn about cutting-edge research in the field of employee health, but significantly progressed my career. Within three months of beginning the MSc, I was offered a new job with a corporate wellbeing provider (whom I stayed with for two years), as the qualification was so well respected. The course offers fantastic networking opportunities in the field of wellbeing: it was through this network that I was approached to apply for my current job as Group Head of Health and Wellbeing at Royal Mail. The MSc is the best career move I have made!”

Shaun Davis (MSc Workplace Health and Wellbeing, graduated 2014) Group Director of Safety, Health, Wellbeing & Sustainability, Royal Mail Group

“The practical workplace application of this programme is, in my opinion, a real strength and one that, speaking with my practitioner hat on, should not be underestimated. I had not fully appreciated how applicable to the ‘day job’ the programme would be when I signed up.”

Taking your MSc research furtherThe MSc element of the programme includes an applied research project, which provides an opportunity to design and execute a workplace health and wellbeing research project. Each year the best two projects are put forward for the IOSH Health and Safety Student Research Competition. Graduate Tracey Mitchell (pictured), Head of Health and Safety at Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, reached the 2013 final with her project, Occupation-Specific Psychosocial Hazards and Burnout Among Older Firefighters.

Students usually conduct their MSc research project in their own organisation or that of a client. Projects generate important insights and implications for the management of workplace health and wellbeing; as such, supervisors work with students to write-up the research for submission to academic and practitioner journals. Examples of published MSc studies include an examination of UK construction workers’ use of sun safety measures (Occupational Medicine) and an investigation into factors associated with attendance at worksite HIV voluntary counseling and testing services in South Africa (AIDS Care).
