We are a community! We are The GLEN! The

Residents of Beverly Glen, Inc. (ROBG) is a com-

munity volunteer organization whose primary

mission is to improve the quality of life in the

Glen. The ROBG is a member of the 5th District

Coalition and works closely with the Bel Air

Beverly Crest Neighbor Council, Neighborhood

Police Traffic advisory board and the Hillside

Federation. We have been making a difference

for over 50 years. Our success is thanks to our

volunteers. Continued success will only happen

with your ongoing support.

Calling Volunteers: Getting people to volunteer

is always a challenge. Everyone thinks someone

else will do it or that it is too big a commitment.

Firstly, that someone else is YOU! Secondly, vol-

unteering can be as simple as an activity or

project - just choose something that grabs your

interest! The amount of time you volunteer is up

to you. Every one of us can make a difference. To

find out how to get involved simply email me or

go to our website, Beverlyglen.org, and let us

know your interest and where you would like to

contribute. The Glen is our community and we

want future generations to have a better quality

of life.

Annual Meeting Review: On October 14th we

had our annual Glen Gathering and Annual

Meeting at the Dorothy & Les River Community

Center (DLRRC). Can you believe that those

attending ranged from people who have lived in

the Glen for just 2 months to those who have

lived here for over 46 years? What a spread of

time! We shared many interesting Glen experi-

ences and got to know each other in the first

hour of the meeting. Thanks to Richard Renaldo

and to the ROGB for providing the wine and food

and Barbara Loyo, our new board member, for

her set up and clean up efforts. During the meet-

ing we elected the new board to serve for our

community. Some of these board members are

serving their final year, making it even more

important for you to volunteer. You will find

more details on the current and the new Board

in this issue of the Glenite.

We had excellent representation from the

LAPD, LAFD and the 5th District City Council

office. As always, discussion was riveting. With

the recent wildfires, fire has been a hot topic.

Did you know that a fire in our community could

spread from Mulholland to Sunset in as little as

45 minutes? With only one way out by road,

what would you do in such a situation? Please

read the emergency preparedness ideas form

Diana Ho and Dean Gamburd in this Glenite.

Another interesting discussion was around the

major challenge we continue to face with Glen

traffic. Please read the ambitious plan and goals

by Keith Hudson and Gayle Prousails in this

issue. Overall the event was a real success and

we hope to see even more people attending next

year. This is a fun and educational meeting and

a great opportunity to get to know your commu-

nity.

Preparing for any Scenario

Residents of Scenario Lane recentlyprepared a ‘Map of the Street’. The ideacame from two long-term residents, in aneffort to connect with their neighbors and,street-wide, to be prepared in the event of anatural disaster. Neighbors loved the ideaand eagerly embraced the opportunity of 15families gathering for wine, food and collab-orative planning. Utilizing the resources ofthe Glen, the residents also invited amember of the Emergency Preparednessteam, Dean Gamburd. Dean, I am told,spoke with authority and revved everyoneinto action. He prepped everyone on theessentials including what to stock in emer-gency kits, what to do and who to contact incertain emergencies.

Scenario Lane’s ‘Map of the Street’includes key household information for eachneighbor: including household members,pets and emergency contact details. Aftercompletion it was made available to eachneighbor. Now, not only are these neighborsprepared for any emergency but they havecreated new friendships and a communitythat together can face any "scenario."

Something in the drinking water?

Five new babies in 6 months! Whatbegan with two moms with similar sizedbellies literally bumping into one another on

the street has evolved into a standingFriday afternoon “Mommy and Me class” –Beverly Glen style. Every week at adifferent house. The group is now up to sixmoms and tots, with the spirit havingspread onto the neighboring street ofChrysanthemum where others (including

the writer of this article) are joining in. Youmay have seen the whole team at your doorthis Halloween. Trick or Treat!

The families of Oletha Lane have formedan invaluable network. The children arefriends and are learning to socializetogether. And the parents have formed anamazing community where they shareparenting tips, diapers, babysitters, toys,meals and the odd glass of wine. Thesefamilies truly believe that they "now live onthe most kid-friendly block in LA." Like theresidents of Scenario Lane, these familiesintend to use their community resources asthey enroll their tots together in their firstyear of school at the Beverly GlenCooperative Playgroup, where they cancontinue to contribute to the well being ofthe children and the community in whichthey live.

Everyone in the Glen has a least onething in common – we truly love our neigh-borhood. It's great to see communitycoming together in different ways. In theshort time I have lived here I have seen thisfirst hand. In talking to residents of old, thisis the way it used to be and it is heart-warming to see that spirit alive and well. Take the test. Get through the night!

Your Emergency PreparednessCommittee has been preaching getready, get ready for some time now.How will you know if you are reallyready? Take this simple test to see ifyou can Get Through the Night!Assume as you drive up your street toyour home tomorrow night that youhave just felt a major earthquake andhave now heard on the radio that allof LA has been struck with a massive9.0 earthquake. You are lucky in thatyou just made it home before thequake struck and that you and yourfamily are all safe. However as youdrive up to your garage and pressyour garage door opener button, yourgarage door fails to open. This isbecause all of LA’s utilities are out.You have NO electricity, NO water,and NO natural gas. How are yougoing to get into your garage let aloneget through the night? Once you haveparked your car and entered yourhome, you are pleased to see that allof your damage control preventiveefforts have worked. All of your book-cases are still upright, your TV andall other items placed on stands,which you properly secured, are stillstanding. Your home is just as you leftit that morning. Good for you. But youstill have NO City supplied electricalpower; NO City supplied water, andNO City supplied natural gas. And youCAN’T use any candles. The use ofcandles could be dangerous if thereare gas leaks or any aftershocks.What if during an aftershock yourcandle falls off the coffee table or

nightstand and comes to rest upagainst your drapes? Do you reallywant to have to fight a fire? Here’s ahelpful hint, as you now try to getthrough the night, keep a pencil andnotepad with you. Write down every-thing you’ve done right and all thosethings you will learn through thisexercise that you need to improve on.Remember, you have no electricityunless you have your own generatorand can set it up and use it, you haveno natural gas unless you haveprovided a second source of gas suchas propane, and you have no Citysupplied water so you can’t run thewater, take a bath or flush your toiletsunless you have provided for thesecontingencies. Remember, one toiletflush equals 1.5 GALLONS of water!Where are you going to get that waterfrom? Magically when you wake inthe morning you’ll find that all is well.You’ll find that the entire Citysupplied services have been turnedback on and all is once again wellwithin your world. Think it’s easy toGet through the Night? I challengeyou to take this simple test. Notwilling to try? How are you going toget through 7-10 days and nightswhen disaster really strikes if youcan’t test yourself to get through onesimple evening? I would be mostinterested in hearing of your experi-ences after your perform this mostinformative exercise. I guarantee youit’s easier to do when there is reallyno real emergency then having tolearn all of the lessons the hard way.

Trees DownWe can all remember the Octoberwinds that fanned the destructivefires throughout SouthernCalifornia and how fortunate wewere in the Glen to escape thefires, at least this time. We werealso very fortunate that when twohuge sycamores blew downacross the boulevard at the FourOaks, no one was killed or injured.It was a long detour home thatnight but a small price to pay. Wecan also take pride in the quickaction taken by our President DanBuben and our EmergencyPreparedness Chair DeanGamburd in setting out warningsigns, cones, and flashing lights toguide traffic around the fallen treenear the Four Oaks. The City wasslow to respond but not our

Playgroup StatementPlaygroup is a Glen preschool,non-profit and parent cooperative,founded by Glen neighbors in the1940ʼs. It rents space from theDorothy and Les River CommunityCenter on Scenario Lane atBeverly Glen Place. Children ofGlen residents receive placementpriority but cannot be guaranteedimmediate acceptance at anygiven time. Other factors includeage, timing of the application, boygirl balance and siblings in the

Glen Professor Joins AcademyOn October 6, Ned Wright, of theUCLA Department of Physics andAstronomy, took a sentimentaljourney: He strolled from theCambridge, Massachusetts neigh-borhood, where he lived andtaught at MIT, to the nearby head-quarters building of the AmericanAcademy of Arts and Sciences.There he was inducted as aFellow of this prestigious organi-zation, founded in 1780. While burglary rings lay low, mail theftand check fraud strike the Glen. Burglariesoccurring in Los Angeles’ PlatinumTriangle including Beverly Glen, Glenridge,and Bel Air Crest have subsided for now.The last reported incident, according toDetective Petrano of the LAPD, occurredin August when it had been reported a manwith a clipboard was snooping aroundhouses. Detectives believe that at least twoprofessional burglary rings stole overseven million dollars in cash, jewelry, rarebooks, art and other valuables. Theburglars mostly struck during the eveningon weekends, once homeowners had leftfor the evening, thus becoming dubbed TheDinner Time Bandits. Burglaries alsooccurred in the early morning, after peoplehad left for work. The burglars usuallygained entry by smashing the masterbedroom window, thus avoiding trippinghome security systems. The LAPD alsobelieves the suspects drove luxury andSUV vehicles, which helped the burglarsblend into their targeted areas. DetectivePetrano said the task force dedicated tofinding the burglars has been disassembledfor the time being due to inactivity and lackof leads. However, the LAPD stronglyadvises residents to remain cautious andreport suspicious persons or cars seen inthe area to the burglary hotline (310) 444-1522 and to call 911 immediately if theywitness a crime in progress or suspiciousactivity.

While the burglaries have ceased, mailtheft and check fraud have struck BeverlyGlen. Beverly Glen resident of twentyyears, as well as former ROBG presidentKen Stern, opened his bank statement thispast September to learn that he had been avictim of check fraud. To his dismay, on his

The First Annual Beverly Glen Wine Tasting was held on August 25th at the D&LRCC and attended by approximately 50 people.The event gave us the opportunity to spend time with our fellow residents as the summer drew to a close and featured an opportu-nity to taste some older wines from Europe and California. Some of the wine was part of a collection given to Beverly Glen by Donand Suzanne Dunaway, the rest was supplemented by me for diversity and to add some breadth. There was something for everyonein this inaugural wine tasting, and of the three cases of wine that were opened, the following deserve special mention.

A 1968 B.V. Pinot made by the legendary Andre Tchelistcheff. While this writer has not had good experiences with older Californiapinots, this was an exception. The wine had a great nose (scent) and entered the mouth like a boatload of flowers...still sweet on theall too brief finish it left an indelible impression. Other Pinots included the 04 Melville, the 05 Foley-Santa Rita hills, 89 Lane Tannerfrom Sanford and Benedict vineyards. These were compared with some Burgundies, most notably the 96 Leroy Bourgogne and a 93Gevery chambertain from Denis Mortet. The Cabernet based wines featured 04 Justin Justification, made with 66% Cabernet Franc.This wine had a sweet edge with profound blueberry influences. Also opened was an 85 Georgis cabernet, a 2002 Justin cabernet,and a 2005 Petit Verdot also from Justin. For the whites, everybody who tried it loved the 71 Ch Coutet, a sweet dessert wine knownas a sauterne. Also opened were an 85 Mersault charmes from Michelot-Buisson and a 95 Mondavi Tokalon I block which is a verylimited bottling of Mondavi's fume blanc.

The Board would like to give a special thanks to the following volunteers for helping to make this event a success: Dan and RisaBuben, Heather Siegel, Lauren Kaplan, Diane Fisher, Amy Jones, Barbara Martinez. We would also like to thank all of the attendeesas well for their donations. We were able to raise $400, which will go to advertising and refreshments for future events. We plan tomake this an annual event, and hope to see you next August at our 2nd Annual Wine Tasting!

Get Those Recycling Blues

We’ve noticed on our occasionalWednesday morning trips up and downthe boulevard a number of Glen house-holds without blue bins set out forrecycling. Therein lies a problem. Itmeans that what’s left are green binssupposed to hold only leaves or branchtrimmings and black bins supposed tohold only trash or garbage and insteadcrammed with items crying out for recy-cling like all kinds of paper, cardboard,bottles(glass and plastic), cans andmetal, nowadays even styrofoam andplastic bags. This does all of us adouble disservice, living as we do inBeverly Glen in Los Angeles on PlanetEarth, first by usurping space in ourovercrowded city land fills and then byfailing to reclaim huge amounts ofmaterial available to be used again. Thegood news is that the problem is easilysolved. Simply call the City at (800) 773-2489 and a beautiful new blue bin will

be delivered to your home free! Youmight have to wait on the phone for acouple of minutes if the line is busy butit’s well worth the wait. The good newstoo is that our citizenry has come a longways from the days when Mayor SamYorty won election on a platform of notseparating the weekly trash. Peopleknow more and care more about ourcommunal living space nowadays andrealize that we’re all in it together. Solet’s brighten up the Glen onWednesday mornings by having thosebright blue recycling bins out in front ofevery home. Blue is a fine color. Itmakes the Glen greener.

Stop Gasoline-PoweredLeaf Blowers

A small victory for the environment hasbeen achieved here on Beverly GlenPlace. With the support of residents onthe block, we’ve converted gardeners’use of gasoline-powered leaf blowers to

cleaner and quieter electric blowers.The sound and smell of gas blowers hasbecome pervasive throughout the city,despite a long-standing ban on theiruse. They are terrible for the air, theears, and illegal (although enforcementis all but non-existent).

We found that appeals to the gardenersdirectly had little effect in most cases,but education of residents was the keyto a positive climate change. We alsoprovided a letter in Spanish that couldbe given to gardeners to explain the lawbehind the ban. Some gardeners werereluctant to make the investment in anelectric blower when they already ownand use a gas model, so many residentspurchased their own. And some of ushave bought communal blowers,shared by two or three households andtheir gardeners. You can get the rightelectric blower for well under $100 (ourcommunal blower was $59 on sale atSears).

statement were three consecutive checksthat had cleared for over $2700. Sternrealized that the culprit had gainedaccess to his bank account and routingnumber by stealing outgoing mail in hismailbox that had contained checks.Fortunately, Stern’s bank replaced themoney, but said it neither had the time orthe resources to investigate further. Sternalso contacted the U.S. Postal Service,and was pleased to hear that they wouldconduct their own investigation and pros-ecute the culprit if found. Stern says heno longer places any outgoing mail in hismailbox, but rather walks a shortdistance from his house to the secureUSPS mailbox on Crater and N. BeverlyGlen Blvd. We should all follow suit,using only secure USPS mailboxes. AsGlen residents and neighbors, let’s keepan eye on each other’s homes and mail-boxes, so we can better protect ourneighborhood, homes, and personal prop-erty.

In MemoryMel Kells, long a Glen resident,died this past August at the ageof 84. Known also as MelRoberts, he had a long anddistinguished career as a gayphotographer and his work hasbeen shown in fine arts booksand museum exhibitions all overthe world. He received a Mastersin Cinema from USC and wasactive in many gay and civil rightsstruggles over the years followingservice as and Air Corps photog-rapher in World War II in thePacific Theater. He was todiscover many years later that hisnearest neighbor in the Glen,Ken Stern, once a Navy Skipper,had been in Okinawa at the sametime. Mel is survived by his longterm partner Peter Gonzales andtwo sisters, Eleanor Savage andShirley Poules.

Stone Canyon ResevoirUpdateUpper Stone Canyon Reservoir WaterQuality Improvement Project:

The Los Angeles Department of Waterand Power (LADWP) must comply withnew federal regulations requiringimprovement to water quality. The new

regulations are as follows: 1) Stage 2Disinfectants and DisinfectionByproducts Rule, and 2) Long Term 2Enhanced Surface Water TreatmentRule. LADWP is required to submit awater quality improvement complianceplan by April 2008.

LADWP and the Coalition to PreserveOpen Reservoirs Stone CanyonSubcommittee (CPOR) of which I am aparticipant have been working togetherto develop feasible alternatives tocomply with these regulations, whileensuring the water quality improvementprojects do not have an adverse effecton the Stone Canyon Complex. Afterconsidering numerous alternatives,LADWP and CPOR have three waterquality improvement projects underconsideration: 1) Floating cover 2)Aluminum cover, and 3) Three pre-stressed concrete tanks within UpperStone Canyon Reservoir (USCR) foot-print.

All of these projects will have relatedimpacts, during construction and afterproject completion. Constructionimpacts will include traffic, air quality,and noise. Permanent impacts willresult from the aesthetic and visualsolutions, and the ability to restorenative vegetation. The extent of theimpacts will vary with each alternative.These impacts are not all inclusive ofthe related impacts that may occurduring construction and after projectcompletion. A meeting will take place inJanuary 2008. You are encouraged toattend to hear what may be in store theUpper Stone Canyon Reservoir.

[Editor's Note:] As we read this reportthere are serious questions involved. Ifall or part of the reservoir is to becovered this may interfere with the firehelicopters drawing water. TheBenedict Canyon fire last spring wasfought wtih helicopter water drops fromStone Canyon.
